DIRECTIONAL SOUND SYSTEM: AUDIOSPOTLIGHT
The Audiospotlight sound system is a new type of audio system. Unlike loudspeakers that spread sound eve-
rywhere, the audiospotlight creates sound that travels in a narrow beam, much like the light from a spotlight.
This unprecedented control of sound distribution allow designers to use sound in new ways which will never
be possible with traditional loudspeaker systems.

Dr F. Joseph Pompei is the inventor of the Audiospotlight, He is the founder of Holosonics and was named as
one of the “World’s Top Young Innovators” by Technology Review. The Audiospotlight is protected by some
US Patents and several International Patents. There are still additional patents pending.

Applications
One can easily think of applying the Directed Audio Projected Audio
Audiospotlight by using the lighting
analogy squarely in mind. Just as the
loudspeaker is like a lightbulb, filling
rooms with sound, the Audiospotlight is
like the beam of light from a spotlight.
The sound only goes where it is aimed
at (Directed), and reflect just like a
beam of light (Projected). It does not
behave like a loudspeaker. Some of
the areas suitable for deployment of
the Audiospotlight includes:

Retail displays/Kiosk:

Use directed audio or pro-

jected audio at
people who should hear it
and illuminate your products
with sound virtually

Presentation/Special Museums/Gallery
Effects: exhibits:

Make sound swoop over the Provide audio

audience commentary for a
or project sound against any specific area near an exhibit
object to create virtual and preserve the quiet at the
sources same time.
Technology
The directivity (narrowness) of any wave producing source depends on the size of the source, compared to
the wavelengths it generates. Audible sound has wavelengths ranging from a few inches to several feet, and
because these wavelengths are comparable to the size of most loudspeakers, sound generally propagates
omni-directionally. In order to create a narrow beam, the sound source must be much larger than the wave-
lengths it is producing. Clearly, having loudspeakers tens of meters wide is not very useful. Therefore to make
narrow beam of sound from a small acoustic source, we instead generate only ultrasound. Ultrasound has
wavelengths that are only a few millimeters long, are much smaller than the source, and consequently travel
in an extremely narrow beam.

Of course, the ultrasound which

contains frequencies far outside
our range of hearing, is com-
pletely inaudible. But as the ul-
trasonic beam travels through
the air, the inherent properties of
the air causes the ultrasound to
distort in a predictable way. This
distortion gives rise to frequency
components in the audible band-
width, which can be accurately
predicted, and therefore pre-
cisely controlled. By generating
the correct ultrasonic signal, we
can create, within the air itself,
essentially any sound desired.

Do note that the source of sound is not the physical device you see, but the invisible beam of ultrasound,
which can be a few meters long. By generating the correct ultrasonic signal, we can create, within the air it-
self, essentially any sound desired. This new sound source, while invisible, is very large compared to the au-
dio wavelengths it is generating. So the resulting audio is now extremely directional, just like a beam of light.
