GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. FIRE AREA DETERMINATION AND REQUIREMENTS

According to NFPA 850 some areas will be subdivided into separate fire areas for the purpose of limiting the
spread of fire, protecting personnel, and limiting the resultant consequential damage to the plant.
It is recommended that fire area boundaries be provided to separate the following:

Cable spreading room(s)

Control room, computer room from adjacent areas

Rooms with major concentrations of electrical equipment, such as switchgear room from adjacent
areas

Battery rooms from associated battery chargers equipment, and adjacent areas

Maintenance shop(s) from adjacent areas

Main fire pump(s) from reserve fire pump(s) where these pumps provide the only source of fire
protection water

Fire pumps from adjacent areas

Warehouses from adjacent areas

Emergency generators from each other and from adjacent areas

Office buildings from adjacent areas

Telecommunication rooms from adjacent areas

3.1

Classification of Occupancy and Hazard of Contents

According to NFPA 101, the occupancy of a building or structure, or portion of a building or structure, will
be classified in accordance with 6.1.2 through 6.1.13.

Industrial Occupancy. An occupancy in which products are manufactured or in which processing,

assembling, mixing, packaging, finishing, decorating, or repair operations are conducted, including
power plants.

Business Occupancy. Occupancy used for the transaction of business other than mercantile.

Storage Occupancy. An occupancy used primarily for the storage or sheltering of goods, merchandise,
products, or vehicles.

The hazard of contents of any building or structure will be classified as low, ordinary, or high in accordance
with NFPA 101: 6.2.2.2, 6.2.2.3, and 6.2.2.4.

Low Hazard. Low hazard contents will be classified as those of such low combustibility that no selfpropagating fire therein can occur.

Ordinary Hazard. Ordinary hazard contents will be classified as those that are likely to burn with
moderate rapidity or to give off a considerable volume of smoke.

High Hazard. High hazard contents will be classified as those that are likely to burn with extreme
rapidity or from which explosions are likely.

3.2

Building Construction Materials

Construction materials used in the turbine-generator buildings or other buildings critical to power generation
or conversion should meet the definition of noncombustible or limited combustible, except for the following:

Roof coverings, which should be permitted in limited applications if the Fire Protection Design Basis
and/or fire risk evaluation demonstrate that the material is acceptable.

Limited use of translucent reinforced plastic panels as allowed by the Fire Protection Design Basis

3.3

Interior Finish

Cellular or foamed plastic materials (as defined in Annex A of NFPA 101, Life Safety Code) should not be
used as interior finish.
Interior finish in buildings critical to power generation or conversion should be Class A.
Interior finish in buildings not critical to power generation or conversion should be Class A or Class B.
Products required to be tested in accordance with NFPA 255, Standard Method of Test of Surface Burning
Characteristics of Building Materials, will be classified as follows in accordance with their flame spread and
smoke development.
(1) Class A interior wall and ceiling finish will be characterized by the following:
(a) Flame spread, 025
(b) Smoke development, 0450
(c) No continued propagation of fire in any element thereof when so tested
(2) Class B interior wall and ceiling finish will be characterized by the following:
(a) Flame spread, 2675
(b) Smoke development, 0450
(3) Class C interior wall and ceiling finish will be characterized by the following:
(a) Flame spread, 76200
(b) Smoke development, 0450
Wherever the use of Class C interior wall and ceiling finish is required, Class A or Class B shall be permitted.
Where Class B interior wall and ceiling finish is required, Class A shall be permitted.

3.4

Smoke Vents

Smoke venting should be provided for areas identified by the Fire Protection Design Basis. Where smoke
venting is provided, smoke should be vented from its place of origin in a manner that does not interfere
with the operation of the plant.
Consideration should be given to smoke venting for the following areas: control room, cable spreading
room(s), switchgear room, and sensitive electronic equipment rooms.
In the areas with gaseous fire extinguishing systems, the smoke ventilation system will be properly
interlocked to ensure the effective operation of the gaseous fire extinguishing system.
