Briefing

Purpose of Briefing
Inform the committee the benefits of
constructing an In-Channel Standing Wave
Structure and Whitewater Park.

Our objective is not only to

improve the streambed for
whitewater boating but to reintegrate river corridors into
communities. Our parks are
not just Whitewater Parks, but
Community parks.

Each park is designed to mesh

with its surroundings; inviting the
community to its banks with
native stone terraces, landscaping,
re-vegetation, and enhancing as
well as creating access points.

These parks affect their communities in many ways. Recent

studies show that our parks have had millions of dollars of
impact every year in the communities in which they reside. In
addition these parks have become the showcase summer
attraction for cities like Reno, Nevada and Vail, Colorado.

Examples:
Golden, $1.7 to $2
million per year in
economic impact
Vail and Breckenridge,
over $1 million per year
each
Reno, over a $1 million in
free advertising in its first
half year

Structures placed in a whitewater river

are designed to survive in one of the
most demanding environments
anywhere. These structures must be
designed to withstand tremendous forces,
erosion, scour, and floods. They must
also be designed to function as a
recreational amenity at all flows while:
Not affecting the floodplain
Not affecting the rivers sediment
transport systems
Not inhibiting native species fish
migration

Structural
Made with large
grouted rock
Anchored below scour
depth or into bedrock
Stresses transferred
into the bed and banks
of the river

Flood

Flood
HEC-Ras flood
modeling
capabilities
Numerous
previous physical
examples in
operation today
Very accurate
analytical models
for flood
performance

Fish Habitat
Designed several
fish passage
structures
Worked with fish
biologists to tailor
designs for specific
species
Studies have
shown increased
fish populations in
parks
