FINANCIAL GROUP
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our dear husband and father.
Jim was born in Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1942. When he was one year old, he moved
to Vernon, BC with his parents and sisters, where his dad was a member of the Armed
Forces. In 1960 Jim moved to Castlegar with his parents and worked in the automotive
trade. He acquired his mechanic papers in 1968. In 1962 he married Ardeth (Sewell)
and they had three children: Robert, Dana and Craig.
In 1979 Jim and his young family moved back to Battleford where they farmed and
raised Hereford cattle; however, the call of the mountains was very strong and they
moved to Salmo in 1984.
Jim worked for the Department of Highways as a mechanic and later the private road
contractors. He retired as shop foreman in Nelson.
He was a jack of all trades, and anything that he couldnt buy, he made.
His passion, aside from his family, was snowmobiling and quadding. He was an avid
outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and go camping with his friends and family. Jim filled his days puttering in his shop
except for when he and Ardeth went for car rides. He loved his grandchildren very much and enjoyed helping them make
things, or teaching them how to drive some of his equipment. They spent many hours driving his quad and snowmobile
around the yard.
Jim was predeceased by his parents Alex and Ada Speers of Vernon, his sister Rhoda of Langley, sister Alice of Port Coquitlam,
an infant brother and his beloved grandson Brent.
He is survived by Ardeth, his wife of 53 years, his sons Rob (Tamara) and Craig, and daughter Dana, several grandchildren
and step grandchildren as well as a little great-granddaughter, his sister Margaret of Vernon and several nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been
entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, your donations to the Salmo Wellness Centre at 413 Baker Ave, Salmo, BC, V0G 1Z0 would
be greatly appreciated.
You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence by visiting the familys register at www.myalternatives.ca

The JV Humphries grades 10 - 12 will be your directors of fun. The students are donating their pay for festival
hosting to the Wiltse family fund, to help out fellow grade
10 student Rowan Wiltse. Rowan just found out she has
bone cancer and must go to the coast for treatments a
lot of upheaval and unexpected expenses for her family.
The Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society will have lots of
skis if your child would like to try out this easy to learn
sport. Bring your old hockey stick and jump into a game
of Four on Four ball hockey. The woodsman competition
has fun events that anyone can enter, like the Swede sawing race and the water boil. Win the prize for being the
first to boil a coffee can of water over a fire you made with
only a hunk of cedar, a hatchet and a handful of wooden
matches.
At noon, catch all the action of the Human Dogsled
Races. Teams of three human huskies and one pintsized musher will by vying for the grand prize of $200
towards their favourite charity.
An outdoor winter festival is guaranteed to give you
a good appetite. Luckily there are some very good
cooks in Kaslo. Grab a hot dog, then choose which
of more than a dozen homemade soups you want for
your lunch. Twirl some bannock on a stick and cook
it yourself over the bonfire, then dip it in spicy applesauce. There will even be some tourtiere a la Lac St
Jean to sample! For a real treat, try out hot sweet and
sticky maple taffy, cooked up and served on a bed of
snow by Serge.
If you have ever wondered what the toads are doing
in February or which Kootenay animal really hibernates, Angus Glass from the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Fund will answer those question and others. A
heated wall tent on site is a good place to warm up
the little ones while they make crafts using materials
gathered from the forest.
Whats new at this years festival? Spring Shine and
Chris Petersen of Argenta have been commissioned
to create a sculpture or an art installation out of materials found onsite (these two artists won the Peoples
Choice award at the 2015 Castlegar Sculpturewalk.)
Selkirk Snowcat Skiing is the patron of the Arts for
this exhibition - a contribution that is much appreciated. What will Chris and Spring create? Youll have to
come to the festival to see!
Its all free, including your lunch, courtesy of the
Kaslo & District Community Forest Society and the
festival takes place at the Kaslo airport from 10 am till
3 pm, Monday, February 8 (BC Family Day.)
For more information, to register your human
dogsled team, or to contribute a pot of soup or stew,

The Valhalla Wilderness Society has mounted a campaign to speak up against the BC governments proposals
to lift the limitations on the number of wolves that hunters can kill in the Kootenays, the Peace, Thompson-Nicola
and Omineca, as well as allowing the hunt of wolves year
round. This proposal also triples the number of limited
entry hunt (LEH) permits for resident hunters to kill grizzly bears in MU 7-52, a remote area in the Peace.

Were hosting an open house and discussion to update you on the results of a recent risk
assessment regarding public access across the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam. Wed like to hear
your feedback, as the input we receive from the community will assist us in finding a
long-term solution.
Where:
When:
Time:
A recent risk assessment for the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam determined that allowing traffic to use
the dam deck as a roadway is a high risk activity with serious potential consequences. This is due to
the dam decks unusual configuration, poor or obstructed sight lines, driver inattention and failure
to obey posted speed limits. The risk assessment looked at potential options for keeping the dam
deck open for public use, and found that there are no reasonable safety measures that can be put
into place to ensure worker and public safety, and recommends that the dam deck be permanently
closed to public access.

Brian Frisby
The light has gone out. Brian Frisby, of Blewett, BC, died
of melanoma on January 13, 2016, at age 69. He left us too
soon and all who loved him will forever feel his loss.
Brian was a practical, creative and resourceful man, who
followed the principles of reuse and recycle long before
it became mainstream. He mastered many trades from
fishing to waste management, but his favourite career
was fatherhood. He adored his two girls and was very
proud of their accomplishments. He encouraged them to
be strong and resourceful and to follow their dreams.
Brian was a good and quietly generous man. If he saw a
need he would reach into his pocket or offer a hand and
had no need or desire for acknowledgement.
He adored children and animals and they loved him
back. Perhaps one of the worst injustices of his untimely
passage is that he didnt get to be a grandfather. He would
have the been the best ever and would have loved every
moment.
Brian is survived by his daughters, his mom and brother,
extended family and friends.
No service is planned at this time but there may be a
gathering to celebrate Brian later in the year.
Help out a neighbour, pet a dog, spend time with a child
in his memory. If you would like to do something more
lasting, please make a donation in Brians name to the
fund to support Rowan Wiltse, another fathers daughter
currently battling cancer (Kootenay Savings Credit Union,
Kaslo Br #19 Acct 1542612.)

Thank You
A BIG THANK YOU to the annual Kaslo Christmas Merchant
Draw. We won $300 in goods & services. Were lucky to have
a vibrant, generous business community. Andy & Gail.
HEARTFELT THANKS to all those who were such caring
support for Holley Rubinsky. Thank you also for the warm
welcome you extended to us when we came to her Celebration of Life. With sincere gratitude from the family of Yuri
Rubinsky, Kathryn, John, Jamie and Christopher Akehurst
and Uncle Adam Leuchter.
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK DR. MALPASS and his staff,
all the doctors and their support staff at the Kaslo hospital
and Bill Keating from CBC for making it possible for me to
cure an aggressive strain of hep-c. It involved 3 separate
treatments over a period of 11yrs and I wouldnt be here if
not for these amazing people. We are very lucky to have
you here. Desmond McKilligan.
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO KNEW & CARED FOR
MAXI. Ill always remember the kindness, care & compassion showed by everyone at the Selkirk Veterinary Hospital.
A special thanks goes to Dr. Maude Gagnon at Selkirk for
her excellent diagnosis, care, compassion & concern for
Maxi. I know he liked you, and I appreciate everything you
did for both of us. Alvina Malone.

Healing
Primer
DL#10272
Energy
healing is a gentle, yet
powerful, holistic
method of balancing and restoring health to the
physical,
emotional, mental and
spiritual bodies.
Many healing
traditions, such
as Chinese medicine, East Indian
Ayurvedic medicine and Hawaiian
Kahuna healing,
have for centuries,
recognized that
the human body
is first and foremost energy. This
energy is called
qi in China, ki in
Japan, prana in
India, mana in
Hawaii and life
force in the western world.

Quantum physics and the modern scientific view of reality support the idea that we and all life, are composed of
energy fields. Knowledge of the energy body and energy
healing was documented thousands of years ago by the Chinese, who identified twelve major meridians, or pathways
of energy, in the body. When this energy field is strong and
vibrant, the entire organism remains healthy and balanced.
From the current Western perspective, the aura, or the
electromagnetic energy field, surrounds and penetrates
the physical body. This energy field is very detailed and
intricate, and its state of balance or imbalance directly
relates to ones state of health on a physical, emotional,
mental and spiritual level.
A wide range of health issues benefit from energy healing and it can be used along with other medical or alternative treatment therapies. Energy healing is generally used
in a therapeutic way, meaning that although one session
alone can provide dramatic improvement, restoring full
balance is accomplished with several or a series of treatments, depending on the issue.
A number of energy healing modalities with various techniques are currently taught in the Western world and each
has value. Working with a healer who has a strong combination of education and experience will bring the best results.
