The Rites of

the Eucharist

OBJECTIVES
- Identify the parts of the rites of the
sacrament of the Eucharist.
- Identify the symbolisms of the rites in the
sacrament of the Eucharist.
- Realize the importance of being mentally
and spiritually present in the Eucharist.

is referred to as the Eucharist
The word Mass comes from the Latin
word missa which means Go you
are sent forth or Go you are
missioned

There are five parts of the Mass:

Introductory Rites
- Gathering song and
processional
- The procession leads with the
altar across followed by the
candles, the book of the
Gospels and lastly the priest.

Introductory Rites
- Greeting- The Lord be with you
- Penitential Rite- We reflect on our
sins and ask God to forgive us.
- Gloria- A song of praise and
thanksgiving
- Opening Prayer- Usually the priest
invites us to pray in silence

Liturgy of the Word


- First Reading- from the old
Testament or in some seasons, the
Acts of the Apostles or the Book of
Revelation.
- Responsorial Psalm- with antiphon
between verses
- Second Reading- usually from the
letters of Paul or another apostolic
writer.

Liturgy of the Word


- Alleluia- verse to welcome the Gospel
- Gospel Reading
- Homily- Where the priest explains the
readings to the people, and give the
people some words of wisdom.
- Profession of Faith- Nicene Creed
- General Intercessions- prayers of the
faithful, that is, petitions for the
needs of the church and the world.

- Preparation of the gifts
of bread and wine.
- Prayer over the gifts

Prayer over the gifts
- The Consecration- When the bread
and wine is changed to the Body
and Blood of Chirst.
- The Transubstantiation- When the
priest shows the congregation the
transformed Bread and Wine

Final Doxology- The priest lifts the
host and the chalice proclaiming
the doxology, the words of praise
linking the Father, Son and Holy
Spirit

The Fraction- The Breaking of Bread
Communion Procession and Receiving
Communion
- Prayer after Communion- When the
priest invites the congregation to pray
and prepare for the Concluding Rite.

Concluding Rite
- Greetings and Blessing- For the last
time the priest and the people
exchange greetings.
- Sending forth and commissioning
(Go in peace, to love and serve the
Lord.)
- Recessional- often with closing song.
