Community Addictions/Prevention Counsellor


General Description:
Under the direction of the Mental Wellness Coordinator, the position of the NNADAP
Prevention Counsellor will focus on: awareness, prevention, promotion, intervention,
treatment aftercare/follow up, and post treatment counselling and relapse prevention.
Position Descriptions are not all-inclusive. This position describes the general nature
and level of work being performed by employees assigned to the position. Employees
may perform other related duties and tasks as required to meet the needs of the
Position.
Specific Accountabilities:

Participate in training, associated with Addictions/Mental Health

Cooperate with other First Nations communities in all areas of Addictions/Mental


Health

Facilitate community workshops in the areas of Addictions/ Mental Wellness,


such as: Relapse prevention, self-help groups, prevention/intervention, grief and
bereavement, suicide prevention and supportive activities

Establish information workshops and associated training programs assisting the


Sipeknekatik Crisis Team

Work closely with other agencies, such as RCMP, Court Officials, MFCS,
Healthcare representatives, NADACA and others as the need arises

Record statistics and compete Monthly reports

Plan and coordinate activities to assist with the raising Addictions and Mental
Wellness awareness and suicide prevention: examples could include outings,
support groups, traditional activities

Provide follow-up on clients through office appointments, home visits and phone
calls

Be available to assist, monitor and respond to the Crisis Land line located at
Health Center

Core Competencies:

Criminal Record Check/ Child Abuse Registry check


Certified in Addictions for First Nations Counsellors
ASIST Training
Canadian Red Cross First AID, CPR-C and AED Certification
Basic Computer skills
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification program
Counselling skills certificate
Excellent communication skills (written/verbal)
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
Dedicated, hardworking and responsible
Strong organizational and multi-tasking capabilities

Other Assets:

Completion of courses associated with Addictions (CCPC or CACCF)


Certification in Grief and Bereavement counselling
Knowledge of Mikmaq language and culture
Flexibility with hours of work and the ability to be on call on weekends
Ability to travel
Valid Drivers licence

*If it is deemed that all qualifications are equal, preference will be given to
registered persons of Aboriginal descent. Pay is to be negotiated and set
forth by Chief and Council and successful applicant is subject to a three (3)
month review*
