Falls district benefits

from lower fuel costs
Lower gas prices means more money
saved by the School District of
Menomonee Falls in its bus transportation
contract.
At the Jan. 25 School Board meeting
the board discussed a request to extend
the current contract with Johnson Bus
Service, which was first approved in 2013
for three years with an option to extend
for two more years.
"The terms of the contract are as
favorable we're going to get," board member Scott Ternes said.
Ternes said "one of the best things"
about the current contract is a fuel rebate
provision that will rebate money to the
district if price of gas drops.
According to information provided to
the board, the fuel cost modifier will
reduce the district transportation costs by
$40,000 next year, which will offset a 2.5
percent ($50,000) increase.
Keith Brightman, director of finance,
added that a full request for proposal will
be issued by the district at the end of the
current contract. The board will take final
action on the contract extension at its
next meeting.

School calendar approved

The board approved the school calendar for the 2016-17 school year. Under the
calendar, school will start on Sept. 1. The
date is the earliest public school districts
can begin school. There is bill pending in
the Legislature that would allow an
exemption for high schools in districts
where at least 20 percent of students take
at least one Advanced Placement course.
Advance Placement courses are collegelevel courses offered at the high school
level.
District staff had prepared a calendar
with a start date prior to Sept. 1 and it
was discussed with the board.
"We have decided that the best calendar to recommend at this time would be
with the Sept. 1 start date," Director of
Human Resources Cari Brust said.
No seats for open enrollment
The district will not offer any seats
through the open enrollment or Chapter
220 programs. Chapter 220 is a voluntary
program under which minority students
from Milwaukee can attend suburban

Falls district mulling

changes to drama program
The School District of Menomonee
Falls is considering changes to the high
school drama program.
School Board member David Noshay
summarized discussions taking place at
the Curriculum and Instruction
Committee during a committee report
at the Jan. 25 School Board meeting.
Noshay said high school Principal Corey
Golla and Director of Curriculum and
Instruction Gary Kiltz updated the
committee on the school drama program. He explained that there is currently no coordinated coursework in
theater and drama that aligns with cocurricular activities.
"As the district moves forward with
a creative academy, revisions to media
studies and the development of coursework around media, marketing and
communications, the recommendation

is to shift away from traditional stage

productions to digital productions in a
more relevant and engaging (way) for
students," Noshay said, summarizing
committee discussion. "Students will
get a great experience around production, but in a venue that is more current than a typical theater venue moving forward."
Noshay said the proposed changes
opens up opportunities in careers that
are viable in the region and will provide
students with experiences that are marketable.
"(The) committee recommended
providing a mix of productions to
include a children's theater production,
band revue and a Fall film festival. More
to come on that," Noshay said.

this is the first time the district is not
offering any seats through open enrollment.
"We're making the decision based on
where current enrollment is positioned
and also, should the referendum not be
successful, in the likelihood that we
may have to reconfigure the elementary
schools," Greco said.
She said the district will have more
information in February for the community on decisions that would be considered based on the outcome of the referendum.

Black History Month, sometimes

referred to as African American History
Month, is a federally recognized monthlong commemoration of the achievements
of African Americans and the roles they
have played in shaping United States history. Each February, Americans recognize
notable African American individuals.
Canada and the United Kingdom also
observe Black History Month, with the UK
celebrating in October rather than
February.
Many deserving people are recognized
during Black History Month, which no
doubt serves to inspire African Americans
and others who appreciate the role
African Americans have played and continue to play.
One of the lesser known yet highly
influential individuals to play a key role
in the development of Black History
Month was Dr. Carter G. Woodson.

Woodson was a son of former slaves who

spent his childhood working in coal mines
and quarries. Self-taught in English and
arithmetic, Woodson attended high
school and completed the curriculum in
two years. He eventually received a
Masters degree in History from the
University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from
Harvard.
Woodson was disheartened that textbooks and American history largely
ignored the achievements of Black
Americans. Therefore, he began the
Association for the Study of Negro Life
and History and founded a complementary journal.
According to The Freeman Institute
Foundation, Woodson decided to launch a
Negro History Week in 1926. He picked
the second week of February to have the
recognition fall between the birthdays of
Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln,

two pioneers of racial equality.

Although the first Negro History Week
met with mild responses, eventually the
yearly tradition caught on and its popularity grew. It wasn't until 1969, however,
that Negro History Week transformed into
Black History Month, after a proposition
by the leaders of the Black United
Students at Kent State University. In
1976, 26 years after Woodson's death,
Black History Month was officially recognized by the U.S. government.
Black History Month has grown considerably since Woodson first launched
Negro History Week nearly a century ago.
His words about why he felt African
American history was so important still
resonate today:
"What we need is not a history of
selected races of nations, but the history
of the world void of national bias, race
hate, and religious prejudice."

Hilltoppers turn back Falls rally

Menomonee Falls was within minutes of pulling off its second Greater
Metro Conference upset within three
weeks, but conference leader Milwaukee
Marquette stopped the Indians to win
62-56 Jan. 26.
The teams entered halftime tied at
26-26. A layup by Justin Gruber gave
Menomonee Falls a 37-34 lead with
11:54 remaining. But a zone employed
by Marquette limited Menomonee Falls
chances over the next several minutes,
as the Hilltoppers opened up a 53-43
lead with 3:16 left after Nolan Wright
converted a dunk.
But Menomonee Falls rallied and a
three-point basket by Bryce McMurtry
cut Marquette's lead to 57-56 with 35.9
seconds remaining. Joe Alexander
answered for the Hilltoppers by converting two free throws at the other end

and then Marquette's defense forced a

loose ball with less than 20 seconds
remaining, which was recovered by
Marquette. Jack Dwyer and Wright converted free throws to close out the game
for the Hilltoppers.
"All you ask for is an opportunity
and we had an opportunity to win the
game there," Menomonee Falls Coach
Ben Farley said afterward."I'm really
happy with the way the guys competed
and look forward to hopefully coming
out and competing every night. We
compete like that every day in practices.
McMurtry led Menomonee Falls with
14 points in the loss to Marquette.
Afterward, Menomonee Falls had a 3-5
record in the Greater Metro and a 9-6
overall mark.

Hutchinson wins
Templeton Geographic Bee
After nail-biting competition, Templeton
Middle School produced its school champion
from the top eight finalists in its Geographic
Bee. Eighth-grader Tate Hutchinson emerged
as the 2016 school champion after rounds of
intense questions, up against seven other
school finalists. The other finalists were
Joseph Cady, Owen Davies, Aidan Enneking,
Connor Gordon, Abhijeet Puri, Shiva Senthil
and James Strasburg. Senthil took second
place, and third place went to Puri.
All Templeton students participated in a
preliminary round by taking a 25-question

written test. Students who scored highest on

that test advanced to the semi-final round
and the eight finalists took part in the final
championship round Jan. 19.
As the school champion, Hutchinson will
take a written test to qualify for state level
competition. Up to 100 of the top scorers in
each state will be eligible to compete April 1
in state level National Geographic Bee events.
The winner of each state bee will travel to
Washington, D.C., in May to participate in
the national event.
