Study Guide: Year 3 2015-16

Materials:

New headway : Intermediate students book, workbook, Dutch companion and Culture
&Literature companion. On all school computers you can find the I-tutor and I-checker.
I would prefer you to work in a folder with A4 paper and dividers to separate different
kinds of work and assignments (klapper 23 rings, lijnpapier en tabbladden). If this is
too difficult for you then please use an A4 exercise book (not a small one).

General
The grammar covered in New Headway Intermediate is essentially a repeat of everything you
have done previously but at a slightly higher level. In our experience there is a broad
spectrum of competence by year 3, so anyone who needs extra help or explanation is
strongly encouraged to come to help lessons where we can give you some more
personal tuition. Please ask questions in the lesson if you dont understand me.
Before you do your test on a unit, you must have taken the following steps:
-listen to the instructions in class and take notes followed up possibly by consulting the
grammar section on the I-tutor CD
- complete the exercises in both students book and workbook as indicated by your teacher
(see below) and use the model answers to check and correct your answers
- do the diagnostic unit test on the I-checker CD (30 grammar and 20 vocabulary questions),
print it off and show it to your teacher before storing it away neatly
Once you have done this, you can use the remaining English lessons before the unit test to
read a book, to do the project exercise in your C&L companion or to go to the website
www.examenglish.com to get some further practice in areas where you might need it most
Tests:

In year 3 most units are tested by a PW weighted 3, which will only take up the second
half a lesson. The first part should be used to ask questions or to do some more
revision/studying.
Unit tests will contain the material covered from both the students book and the
workbook.

In addition to tests on New Headway you will receive:

1 reading, 1 writing and 1 listening test (weighting 3) per trimester. See Magister for
dates
One speaking assignment per trimester
1 Idiom test every calendar month (weighted 3) Based on the Flo-Joe FCE word bank
you will get an Idiom test in the first lesson of the new calendar month. For example, on
October 1st class 3A will have a test on the Word bank of September.

Homework and studying (not necessarily the same thing):

You should expect to do 30 minutes homework per lesson, plus learning for tests. I usually
give exercises to complete for the next lesson. As well as completing your homework, you
should review what we have done in the lesson, make a note of anything you dont

understand and come to the lesson with questions. If you make mistakes in your homework,
you should correct them and ensure that you know what you did wrong. If you are studying
well, I should in theory be able to give you a proefwerk at any time!
Students who fail to do homework, forget homework and books or are disruptive in
the lesson, will be given extra work to do.
Hopefully you should now have a good idea about what to expect this year. Lets make it a
good one!
