BOOK REVIEW ON THE THREE BODY

PROBLEM

The three body problem, Chinese Science Fiction written by Liu Cixin. It is
a triology titled Remembrance of Earths Past in Orbital Mechanisms. It
has received a huge amount of praise. It's considered as one of the most
popular science fiction novels in China and with its English translation.
The plot is fairly fast paced, starting in the midsts of China's Cultural
Revolution in the 60s.The plot shifts to the present/near-future where the
majority of the action plays out. In the main storyline, the characters
struggle to understand why groups of scientists have been committing
suicide and in doing so encounter a mysterious game, Three Body. The book
delineates a Stellar System with three suns whose trajectories are entirely
unpredictable. The gravitational forces between the suns and the planets
are extremely chaotic, and have consumed 11 out of 12 planets by the
suns. The living environment on the sole remaining planet, Trisolaris, is
extremely harsh. when the planet is within the orbit range of one sun, it
enters a short period of stable day-night cycle, which the native
Trisolarans term as Stable Era. when the planet is trapped between the
orbits of multiple suns, its day-night cycle becomes disrupted, and the
days may become extremely hot. If the planets be too close to any of the
suns, or extremely cold then this period is termed as a Chaotic Era.
Throughout the years, with the rise and abrupt terminations of many
civilizations, Trisolarans have learnt to predict the movement of the suns
for a couple of years, as well as hydrate and dehydrate their bodies to
adapt to the environment of the Stable Eras and Chaotic Eras. However,
eventual research determine that there is no solution to the three-body
problem. With no definite pattern to the suns' movement, Trisolaris may
be destroyed at any time in the future. In the face of this existential crisis,
Trisolaran society evolved to become highly totalitarian and fully
dedicated to the exploration of new planets in outer space to colonize and
resettle upon.
The three body problem, which was described by Whittaker as the most
celebrated of all dynamical problems , it fulfilled the necessary
criteria for a good mathematical problem. It can be simply stated as three
particles which move in space under their mutual gravitational attraction,
given their initial conditions, determine their subsequent motion. Though
one or two body problems can be solved in closed form by means of
elementary functions, the three body problem is a complicated linear

problem, for which no similar type of solution exists. Apart from its
intrinsic appeal the three body problem has a further attribute which has
contributed to its attraction for potential solvers, its intimate link with the
fundamental question of the stability of the solar system. And hence, as it
is often the case with such problems, its importance is now perceived as
much in the mathematical advances generated by attempts at its solution
as in the actual problem itself. These advances have come in many
different fields, including, in recent times, the theory of dynamical
problems.
Zuckerberg's science-fiction picks may be lighter fare than his other
selections, but they all have some cultural relevance he's trying to tap
into. It has focused on big ideas that influence society and business. It's set
during Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution, and kicks off when an alien race
decides to invade Earth after the Chinese government covertly sends a
signal into space. It's notable because it's been reported to be indicative
of a cultural shift in China, where rapid modernization and progress have
captured the public's imagination.
