Expulsion Fuse Cutouts

Scope and service conditions

1.1

Scope

This specification covers high-voltage expulsion fuse cutouts (hereinafter referred to as


the DOS) complete with fuse-carriers designed for using outdoor and for the rated voltage
of 12kV and 36kV.
1.2

Service conditions

1.2.1 Normal service conditions


(a) Ambient air temperature
- Maximum ambient air temperature: 55 C
- Maximum 24 hour average value of the ambient air temperature: 35 C
- Minimum ambient air temperature: -15 C
(b) Maximum pollution level: level II medium, according to the Table 1 of IEC 60815
1.2.2 Unusual service conditions
For installation in a place where environmental conditions are out of the normal
conditions, IEC 60721 series should be specified.

Definitions

3.1

DOS

Drop Out fused Switch, which is the same meaning of the expulsion fuse cutout
3.2

Expulsion fuse

The fuse in which operation is accomplished by expulsion of gases produced by the arc
3.3

Fuse-base (fuse-mount)

The fixed part of a fuse provided with contacts and terminals


3.4

Fuse-carrier

The movable part of a fuse designed to carry a fuse-link


3.5

Fuse-holder

The combination of the fuse-base with its fuse-carrier


3.6

Fuse-link

The part of a fuse (including the fuse-element) intended to be replaced after the fuse has
operated.
3.7

Fuse-element

The part of the fuse-link designed to melt under the action of current exceeding some
definite value for a definite period of time

Breaking capacity

The value of prospective current that a fuse is capable of breaking at a stated voltage
under prescribed conditions of use and behavior

K type fuse-link

The high-speed fuse-link with pre-arcing time-current characteristics in accordance with


the Table 15 of IEC 60282-2

The low-speed fuse-link with pre-arcing time-current characteristics in accordance with

4.1

Kinds

The DOS shall be of Class A as per the clause 5.1 of IEC 60282-2.

4.2

Ratings

4.2.1 Rated voltage


The rated voltage of the fuse-holder and the fuse-link shall be in accordance with the
Table 5 of this specification.

4.2.2 Rated insulation level


(a) The rated withstand voltages to earth, between poles and across the base shall be in
accordance with the Table 6 of this specification.

(b) The rated withstand voltages across the isolating distance of the fuse-base shall be in
accordance with the Table 7 of this specification.

4.2.3 Rated frequency


The rated frequency shall be 50 Hz.
4.2.4 Rated current of the fuse-base
The rated current of the fuse-base shall not be less than 100 A.
4.2.5 Rated current of the fuse-link
The rated current of the fuse-link shall be in compliance with GECOLs request from the
value in the Table 4 of this specification.
4.2.6 Rated breaking capacity
The rated breaking capacity of the fuse-link including the fuse-carrier shall be stated by
supplier, and selected from the R10 series specified in ISO 3.
R10 series: 1, 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8 and their multiples of 10

5.1

Requirements
Required structure

5.1.1 Fuse-holder
(a) The fuse-holder shall be structured to be easily operated from the ground level with a
hook-stick.
(b) The fuse-holder shall be compact, light and robust enough to withstand shock due to
frequent operation.
5.1.2 Mounting bracket
(a) The mounting bracket shall be structured to properly fix the DOS on the L type arm as
well as U type arm, and be equipped with all accessories including bolts, nuts,
washers and so on.
(b) The bracket shall be able to be mounted at an angle of 15 vertically.

5.1.3 Stationary and movable contacts


(a) The stationary and movable contact surfaces shall be of equal to or better than silver to
minimize the contact resistance.
(b) The upper stationary contact assembly shall be provided with a safety latch to prevent
the fuse-carrier from dropping due to vibration.
(c) A back up spring made out of stainless steel or phosphor bronze shall be provided to
ensure constant pressure between the upper stationary contact and the upper movable
contact of the fuse-carrier.
(d) The lower stationary contact support and the fuse-carrier shall be machined at the
swiveling or axle point to enable the fuse-carrier with the fuse-link to be correctly
guided into the latching position by an operating rod.
(e) The hinge at the stationary contact shall be so designed to prevent the dropping off of
the fuse-carrier in the drop-out position, due to shock and vibration.
(f) A suitable guiding arrangement shall be provided in the upper contact to ensure easy
engagement of the fuse-carrier.
5.1.4 Terminals
(a) The upper terminals shall be of bi-metallic type, suitable to accommodate copper as
well as aluminum conductors up to 50 mm2. The lower terminals shall be suitable to
accommodate copper conductors up to 50 mm2.
(b) The upper terminal shall be positioned to receive the conductor from either side or
upward direction while the lower terminal shall be able to receive the conductor from
either side or downward direction.
5.1.5 Fuse-Carrier
(a) The fuse-carrier shall be of equal to or better than fiberglass epoxy or suitable
insulating tubing for outdoor use with suitable inner layer for generating arc
quenching gas, and the outer layer of the insulating tubing shall be protected against
deterioration due to the solar radiation.
(b) The lower part of the fuse-carrier shall be of suitable spring loaded stainless steel
flipper arranged toggle mechanism to ensure wiping action during arc interruption and
fast clearance drop-out sequence.
(c) The installation and removal of the fuse-carrier shall be facilitated by inserting the
operating rod into a lifting eye at the hinge end (lower) of the fuse-carrier when it is in
the dropped out position.
(d) An operating lever eye shall be provided at the top of the carrier to facilitate a
downward pull by the operating rod to release the latch incorporated in the stationary
upper contact.

5.1.6 Dimensions of the fuse-holder


(a) The dimensions of the fuse-holder shall comply with GECOLs request.
(b) Otherwise, the dimensions of the fuse-holder shall be stated by the supplier.
5.1.7 Dimensions of the fuse-link
(a) The dimensions of the fuse-link shall comply with GECOLs request.
(b) Otherwise, the dimensions of the fuse-holder shall be stated by the supplier, and the
Annex B of IEC 60282-2 shall be taken into account.
5.1.8 Creepage distance of the fuse-bases
(b) The creepage distance of the fuse-bases shall not be less than the values in the Table 8
of this specification.

5.2

Required performance

5.2.1 Limits of temperature rise


The fuse-base, fuse-carrier and fuse-link shall carry their rated currents continuously
without exceeding temperature and temperature-rise limits specified in the Table 17 of IEC
60282-2. These limits shall not be exceeded, even when the rated current of the fuse-link is
equal to the rated current of the fuse-carrier intended to accommodate this fuse-link.
5.2.2 Time-current characteristics
(a) The Supplier shall make available time-current characteristic curves (TCC curves) by
means of the clauses 7.3 of IEC 60282-2.
(b) The tolerance of TCC curve shall not exceed 20 %.
5.2.3 Standard conditions of use
The DOS shall be able to break correctly any value of prospective current under the
conditions stated in the clause 7.1 of IEC 60282-2.
5.2.4 Standard conditions of behavior
According to the conditions of use indicated in the clause 5.2.3of this specification, the
behavior of the DOS shall be in compliance with the clause 7.2 of IEC 60282-2.

Tests
Type tests

The type tests shall be carried out in accordance with the clause 8 of IEC 60282-2, and
the type tests for the DOS are listed in the Table 9 of this specification.

6.2

Acceptance tests

The acceptance tests shall be performed in accordance with the clause 9 of IEC 60282-2,
and the acceptance tests for the DOS are listed below;
(a) Dimensional verification
(b) Measurement of resistance of fuse-links
The items of the type tests can be included by the agreement between GECOL and the
supplier.

7.1

Rating plate
Requirements for rating plate

(a) For fuse-base, the rating plate shall be plainly visible in the position of normal service
and installation.
(b) The rating plates and their fixings shall be weatherproof and corrosion-proof.
(d) The font, size and colors of letters shall comply with the Table 10 of this specification.

7.2

Packing and delivery

The supplier shall provide packing of the DOS as is required to prevent their damage or
deterioration during transit to their final destination and long period of storage. The
packing shall be sufficient to withstand, without limitation, rough handling during transit
and exposure to extreme temperatures, salt and precipitation during transit and open
storage.
(a) All DOSs and their components shall be shipped from the factory to the specified site.
(b) Each shipment shall include a detailed packing list identifying all items by part
number, including hardware.
(c) For fuse-bases, they shall be packed one by one even though the numbers of fusebases to be supplied is plural.
(d) All material shall be carefully loaded for protection during shipment.
(e) Small parts and fasteners shall be carefully boxed, crated, bagged or otherwise
containerized and protected for shipment.
(f) All materials shall be arranged to allow safe unloading at the site.
(g) There shall be handling instruction to minimize damage.

9.1

Information to be given by GECOL

9.1.1 Service conditions


Excluding the normal conditions referred to the clause 1.2.1of this specification, service
conditions at which the DOS will be installed shall be stated by GECOL.
9.1.2 Rated values and characteristics
The specific ratings and classes shall be stated by GECOL.
For fuse-holder;

9.2

9.2.1 Technical data sheet


The technical data sheet shall be filled and provided by supplier according to the annex
A of this specification.

9.2.2 Certificates of type tests


(a) The certificates of type tests according to clause 6.1of this specification shall be
provided by supplier.
9.2.3 Guidelines and manuals
The supplier should provide instructions for the transport, storage, installation, operation
and maintenance of the DOS. The instructions for the transport and storage should be given
before delivery, and the instructions for the installation, operation and maintenance should
be given by the time of delivery at the latest.
(a) The supplier shall specify in his documents or catalogues the conditions for
installation, operation and maintenance of the DOS during operation and after a fault.
(b) The instructions for the transport, installation and operation of the DOS shall indicate
the measures that are of particular importance for the proper and correct installation,
commissioning and operation of the DOS.
(c) The curves related to time-current characteristics, cut-off characteristics and I 2t
characteristics shall be provided by supplier.
(d) The application guides for the DOS shall be given by supplier.
9.2.4 Safety standards
The safety standards for installation, operation and maintenance shall be provided by
supplier.
9.2.5 Related drawings
The related drawings including the shape and dimensions of the DOS shall be provided
by supplier.

10 Warranty
The supplier shall provide the full warranty on all equipment supplied during the period
specified below. The warranty shall cover all parts and all costs, which are directly
attributable to the supplier. Warranty coverage shall begin on the date that the equipment is
received.
The warranty period shall be 3 years. For fuse-link, it shall be 6 months.
