AUMA INDIA GEAR OPERATORS

Gear Boxes combine with auma
india Actuators to complete the valve control
service. There are basically three types of Gear
Boxes, namely Worm Gear Boxes (GS & GF Series),
Bevel Gear Boxes (GK Series) and Spur Gear Boxes
(GST Series).

The Gear Boxes are designed for output torque

from 300 Nm (GS 40) to 250,000 Nm (GS 500) for
motor operation. The main features of GS Gear
Boxes are:
- Full 360O worm wheel design, making the Gear
Box suitable either for multiturn or quarter turn
operation.

All Gear Boxes are manufactured to comply with

auma Germany specifications. The housings are
designed for high rigidity to absorb high
torsional and thrust loads. The Gear Box
enclosure conforms to IP 67 class. IP 68 enclosures
can also be supplied on request. All Gear Boxes are
lubricated with special grease for life.

In case of quarter turn operation, additional three

segments are available for repositioning, thus
extending the life of worm wheel by three times.
- A separate coupling with involute splines is
provided for coupling to the valve. The
coupling is removable for machining the bore
to suit valve shaft. The orientation of the Gear
Box while mounting on valve is made simple
due to involute splines on the coupling.

WORM GEAR BOXES

TYPE GS 40 TO GS 500
auma india GS type Gear Boxes are designed for
O
O
rotation upto 135 with end stop or 360
operation of Ball Valves, Butterfly Valves, Plug
Valves, Dampers etc. The extremely rugged
construction features positive adjustable end stop
on input shaft for precise valve positioning.

- Unique design of end stoppers on input shaft

with screws and nut mechanism allows precise
and positive setting upto 135O operation.
- Each Gear Box is designed for use with auma
india
Actuator to facilitate economical
automation of valves.

GS 40.2 - GS 125.2

- To reduce the input torque, for a given output of

Worm Gear Box, a primary reduction Gear
Box can be easily attached at input of the Gear
Boxes. For this purpose, GS 100 & GS 125
Gear Boxes are fitted with planetary reduction
Gear Box (VZ4) and higher series are fitted
with Spur Reduction Gear Boxes (GZ) of
various ratios. This feature enables selection
of smaller actuators for economical sizing.

GS 160 - GS 500

WORM GEAR BOXES

TYPE GF 40 - GF 250

GK bevel Gear Boxes are available for wide

range of torque and thrust load capacity ranging
from 120 Nm torque x 60 KN thrust (GK 10) to
8000 Nm torque x 820 KN thrust (GK 35).
Various types of output drives (Type A to Type E) are
available, depending upon application.

GF Series of Gear Boxes are specially used for

actuation of Dampers and Fly Valves which
require quarter turn applications.

GK Gear Boxes are designed considering power

to auma
operation and are easily adapted to
india Actuators, thus enabling small actuators to be
economically sized for operation of large valves.

GF 40.2 - GF 125.2

SPUR GEAR BOXES

TYPE GST 12 - GST 1600
auma india
GST range of spur Gear Boxes are
designed for operation of rotating stem valves.
They can be combined with auma india
Actuators or can be easily operated by hand
wheels. GST Gear Boxes can be easily adapted
for Globe, Angle and Non return valves. They
produce an output torque of 120 Nm (GST 12)
to 16000 Nm (GST 1600).

The gear operator is a worm Gear Box of GS

Series with a built-in floor stand and a crank
lever. The crank lever is provided with a number of
mounting ball and socket joints at varying
moment arms to suit given damper/valve
application. All other features of GF series are
same as GS Gear Boxes. GF Gear Boxes in sizes
higher than GF 250 can be supplied on request.
GF Series Gear Boxes can also be coupled to
primary reduction Gear Boxes and also toto auma
india Actuators to obtain ON-OFF Control or
regulating duty.

BEVEL GEAR BOXES

TYPE GK 10-GK 35
auma india
Bevel Gear Boxes are designed to
operate all types of rising or non-rising stem
valves and gate valves where thrust may or may
not be taken by the Gear Box. The bore of the
output bevel gear allows valve stem to pass
through it to reach its full travel.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Choose the nearest available actuator output speed

(refer auma Actuator catalogue for details) i.e. 125
rpm.

LINEAR OR MULTI TURN VALVES

(Eg : GATE, GLOBE DIAPHRAGM TYPE ETC.)
For output thrust upto 190kN and output torque upto
100 kgm, auma multiturn actuators can be directly
selected and mounted on the valve. However, a
also offers bevel gear boxes type ''GK'' and spur gear
boxes type ''GST'' for upto and higher torque/thrust
requirements.

Hence,
the
selected
combination is
GK25. 1A/SA50E125 and the revised operating time
~ 52 secs.
Where actuator designation SA50E125 indicates
open-close duty actuator SA50 with output drive type
E having output rpm of 125

Data required:
1. Type of valve
2. Max. thrust in case of rising stem valves
3. Max. torque in case of rotating stem valves
4. Type of service/duty
5. No. of turns of stem per stroke or stroke and
stem thread details
6. Operating time
7. Stem diameter
8. Mounting details

Note: When coupling auma actuator with auma gear

box, always employ output drive type 'E'.
After selecting the suitable model, the following points
should be verified:
1. Output torque capacity (refer ''Technical Data'' for
details).
2. Max. stem acceptance dia. (refer ''Technical Data''
and ''Output Drive'' for details).
3. Mounting flange compatibility (refer ''Technical
Data'' and ''Output Drive'' for details).

Example :
Minimum data:
1. Max. thrust = 300kN = 30000 Kgf
2. No. of turns/stroke = 20
3. Operating time = 60 secs.
4. Open - Close duty

Note: 1. In case of multi turn, non-rising (rotating)

stem valves, same selection procedure
should be followed except for the following :
Output torque valves are to be compared
and evaluated
Output drive types B,C,D or E should be
selected, depending on type of coupling
required (normally, the output drive
type will be either 'B' or 'E')

Step 1 : Selection of Gear Box

Refer ''Technical Data'' and ''Output Drive Types'' of
gear boxes (GK10-35) in catalogue
For rising stem valves, always select output drive
'type A'

2. The same selection procedure is applicable

for auma spur gear boxes ''GST''.

Select gear box type whose max. thrust permissible

is more than or equal to required thrust.
In this case, gear box type is GK25.1, whose
maximum thrust permissible is 320kN.
Step 2 : Selection of Actuator
Referring to the ''Technical Data'' of Gear Box
catalogue (GK10-35), suitable actuator model given
in the table is to be selected.
The required output rpm of the actuator can be
calculated as follows:
Actuator output rpm =
No. of turns of valve/stroke x Reduction ratio of gearbox
x 60
Operating time in Secs.

In this case, suitable actuator model is SA50

and
Actuator output rpm =

20 x 6
x 60 = 120 rpm
60

22

In this case, three options are available for selection:

PART TURN VALVES: (Eg: BUTTERFLY

VALVES, BALL VALVES, PLUG VALVES,
LOUVRE DAMPERS ETC.)

Option 1 : Referring to first column of ''Technical

Data'' of GS 160.
Model : GS 160 with SA50E32 actuator.
Operating time = 25 secs. (for 90O)
Actuator designation SA50E32 indicates
open-close duty actuator SA50 with output
drive type E, having output speed of 32.

In part turn valves, the final movement of valve shaft

O
required is normally 90 . The electrical actuators are
primarily multi-turn type and hence, it is necessary to
employ an intermediate worm gear box between the
actuator and the valve so as to achieve 90O angle of
rotation.

Option 2 : Referring to second column of GS 160.

Model : GS 160 + GZ 14 (216:1) with
SA 12E125 actuator.
O
Operating time = 25 secs. (for 90 )

auma offers the following two types of worm gear

boxes:
Direct flange mounting type ''GS''
Foot mounting type ''GF''

Where GZ 14 in the primary reduction gear

box and 216:1 is the total reduction ratio of
the gear box.

Data required:
1. Type of valve
2. Max. Valve torque *(unseating torque)
3. Type of service/duty
4. Angle of travel (normally 90O)
5. Operating time required
6. Shaft dia.
7. Mounting flange details
*Note: In case of regulating/modulating service, max.
(or unseating) torque and regulating (or
running) torque are required for proper
selection. Regulating torque should not exceed
50 % of max. torque.

Option 3 : Referring to the third column of GS 160

Model : GS 160 + GZ 14 (432:1) with
SA6E180
O
Operating time = 36 secs. (for 90 )
Note: Always select output drive type 'E' for Actuator
when coupling auma actuator with auma Gear
Box.
Out of the above three options, any one suitable
combination can be selected, considering the operating
time.

Example :
Minimum data:
1.
2.
3.

After selecting the suitable model, following important

points should be checked:

Max. valve torque = 7000Nm (~ 700 kgm)

Open - Close duty
Operating time = 30 secs.

1. Max. stem/shaft dia. (refer ''Technical Data'' for

details).
2. Max. stem/shaft length acceptance(refer dimension)
'I max' of Dimensions sheet)
3. Mounting flange compatibility (refer ''Technical
Data'' for details).

Step 1 : Selection of Gear Box

Refer ''Technical Data'' of gear box catalogue
(GS 40 - GS 125 & GS 160 - GS 500)

Note: i. The selection procedure is same for foot

mounted type worm gear boxes ''GF''.

Select a gear box type whose ''Output torque for

motor operation'' is more than or equal to required
''valve torque''
In this case, gear box type is GS 160 whose maximum
torque capacity for motor operation is 8000Nm

ii. In case of manually operated valves, select

the gear box model whose ''output torque for
manual operation'' is more than or equal to
required valve torque.

Step 2 : Selection of Actuator

Referring to the ''Technical Data'' of Gear Box
catalogue, suitable multi-turn actuator (given in the
bottom row) is to be selected.
Please note that economical sizing of actuator can be
done by using higher reduction ratios considering
operating time requirement. This is achieved by
employing a primary reduction gear box having
different ratios.
Refer to the bottom-most row in the ''Technical Data''
O
for different operating time in seconds for 90 at
different actuator output speed.
