6th / 7th February 2016

Dear Parishioners,

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our three scripture readings today have a common theme.

Isaiah, Paul and Peter are called by God in different ways. All feel
unworthy of the task. When Isaiah experiences the holiness of God, he
says: What a wretched state I am in! I am lost ! St Paul says: I am
the least of the apostles St Peter says: Leave me Lord; I am a sinful man. Yet, these
were key people called to serve God, in spite of their limitations. God sees beyond human
failings; he has faith in us. God calls us to serve, not because we are already saints, but
because we are willing to respond as best we can. We try to play our part, and leave the rest
to God. We have a chance to make a new start this coming Lent. During our celebrations of
the Year of Mercy, we have an opportunity to understand once again what Gods mercy and
compassion looks like and how it can be applied in our lives in our time.
ASH WEDNESDAY: We begin Lent in a few days time. I bring to your notice the
invitations set out in the Lenten flyer, giving the celebrations, services and events taking
place over the next 40 days! We may be considering Lenten Resolutions there is more
than enough to be getting on with. Let us try to make the most of the opportunities put
before us. Let prayer, Fasting, Giving, be at the center of our activity this Lent.
The flyer publicising the parish activities during this season of Lent are available. See
overleaf of some the possibilities.
Two books available one the PARIS DIARIES & the other LENT FAST,
VEGETARIAN FEAST published by Justice and Peace Commission. They are 3 each or 2 for
5.
IMRALI PRISON, ISTANBUL: Next Sunday morning I should leave very early to join
an International Delegation in Istanbul, Turkey. We will be lawyers, politicians and
individuals seeking to meet Abdullah Ocalan. He has been in the Imrali Island prison since
1999. He for many is the Kurdish Nelson Mandela. From his prison cell he has written
three books. They map out a peaceful solution to the longstanding Turkish/Kurdish conflict.
His release would be so significant in the peace process in the Middle East. Pray for our
Delegation, please, as we try to negotiate a slender hope to meet Abdullah Ocalan and to
play some part in working for peace and human rights in this situation.
There is one little difficulty in this exercise. Some time ago, when a similar delegation
attempted to meet Abdullah Ocalan, they were arrested by the Turkish authorities. I cant
imagine that happening this time!! (I hope not!) I will try to keep you informed of progress.
Dont forget your Lenten resolutions!! Have a wonderful week.
Fr Joe

LENTEN ALMS APPEAL CARITAS
WESTMINSTER Our 2016 Lenten Alms
appeal will be in support of Caritas
Westminster, the official social outreach
arm of the Diocese of Westminster. Lent is
the perfect time for us to think of those
suffering without the poor, the
marginalised, the least among us and to
make a sacrifice through prayer, fasting and
almsgiving. Caritas Westminster works
across our Diocese, throughout London and
Hertfordshire, enabling and co-ordinating
parish communities to find practical
solutions that address a variety of local
social needs. For example, rough sleeping,
food poverty, human trafficking, youth
employability and loneliness. During Lent
there will be two second collections in
support of Caritas Westminster. Please take
a Caritas Westminster flyer as you leave
Mass today. You can also get more
information about Caritas Westminster (and
make a donation online) at
www.rcdow.org.uk/caritas
