Sub: Developing a Strategic Roadmap for Telangana Organic

Farming Policy
Request for appointment to Update your good self
Dear Sir,
Your good self may be aware that International Competence Centre for
Organic Agriculture (ICCOA) is a knowledge and learning centre for all
facets of organic agriculture and agribusiness in India. ICCOA is a multistakeholders organization with pan India presence and works closely with
Central and State Governments, Private sector and farmers to promote
organic farming in the country.
ICCOA has also emerged as the most significant organization to represent
the Indian Organic sector internationally, with close relations with IFOAM,
FiBL, Nurnberg Messe and others. ICCOA is implementing major projects in
12 states in India supported by the respective State Govt.department(s).
Please see a brief profile attached or visit www.iccoa.org for more details.
And your good self is also aware that Honble Prime Minister of the country
and the new Govt are also making organic agri-sector a major focus, and
therefore this is the right time for the new state of Telangana under your
guidance to create the right models in the State that are sustainable and
replicable.
Organic agriculture and agribusiness need to focus on both long-term
sustainability as well as better access to markets. In this context, firstly
let me quickly give a brief update of the organic sector in India and
globallyOrganic agriculture sector has witnessed unprecedented growth, especially in
the last 08-10 years. With the combined efforts of the organic farmers, market
forces and some Govt. support, area grew really fast from only 42,000 ha
under certified organic farming during 2003-04, to reach 10,20,000 ha by
2012. But after 2012, the area is dropping in many states (especially govt
supported projects) and is currently dropped to below 7,00,000 ha in 2014!
This is an important thing to note especially when govts are supporting huge
expansion of area under organic agriculture without putting in place a
strategic roadmap based on a vision for a holistic organic movement in mind.
However, also the fact is that the markets for organic products are growing
faster with the global demand growing at 20-25 % p.a (and Indias markets
growing at even 40-50%). The worldwide sales crossed US $ 75 billion and are
expected to reach US $ 100 billion by 2015. The trade estimate in India shows
that the market for organic products has crossed Rs. 3000 crores (exports at

Rs. 2400 crores and domestic markets at Rs. 600 crores). The market in India
will touch Rs. 6000 crores (USD 1 billion) by 2015-16.

We are now writing this letter to request an appointment to discuss/apprise

your goodself on the following:
1. Discuss on the progress of Organic Farming policy of the State:
ICCOA is also Member of Advisory committees for Policy and Strategy
formulation works related to Sustainable and Organic Farming at Central
and many States (e.g. DAC, Ministry of Agri, GoI; Govt of Sikkim,
Nagaland, Govt of Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil nadu).
2. To discuss the concept of Sustainable Biovillages: For organic
farming to be successful and sustainable, the Depts of Agri, Horticulture,
Animal husbandry and other allied sectors must coordinate closely to
integrate all their schemes in a holistic manner. Only through this
integration can real organic farms (or Sustainable Biovillages) be
developed; and only then can we ensure benefits to farmers through
organic farming.
3. Develop a Strategic roadmap for organic agriculture and
agribusiness in Telangana with focus of crops, regions, markets and
improvement of farmers incomes.
We would be grateful if you could kindly give us a date and time of your
convenience to meet your good self. Kindly oblige
Yours truly,
