1.ABSTRACT
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Organization is man's important creation as it facilitates the realization of pre-determined
goals .Modern Organizations have grown in size employing thousands of workers for conversion
of physical input into products and services required by the society on a large scale.
Human Resources are the most valuable asset of an organization that can help in
achieving its goals. Human Resources Management is concerned with the human beings in an
organization. Human Resource is the total knowledge, abilities, skill, talents and aptitudes of an
organizations workforce. When individual come to work place, they come with not only
technical skills, knowledge, experience etc, but also their personal feelings, perception, desires,
motives, attitude, values etc. So Human Resource Management will mean management of
various aspects of human resource. An important element of human resource management is the
humane approach, while managing people. This approach helps a manager to view his people as
an important resource. It is an approach in which manpower resources are developed not only to
help the organisation in achieving its goals but also to the self- satisfaction of the concerned
persons. This approach focuses on human resource development, on one hand, and effective
management of people on the other hand.

1.2 ORGANISATION STUDY

Organizational study, is the systematic study and careful application of knowledge about
how people - as individuals and as groups - act within organizations. Organizational Behavior
studies encompass the study of organizations from multiple viewpoints, methods, and levels of
analysis. Whenever people interact in organizations, many factors come into play. This
organizational study attempts to understand and model these factors. Organizational studies of
departments generally form part of business schools, although many universities also have
industrial psychology and industrial economics programs.Individuals in the organisation may
5

have their own goals. And in the organisational context, the focus should be on the achievement
of the organisational goal, without harming the individual interests. It is essential that the people
should voluntarily cooperate with one another for the achievement of the common goal.

1.3 ORGANIZATION AS A SYSTEM

It helps to think of organizations as systems. Simply put, a system is an organized collection of
parts that are highly integrated in order to accomplish an overall goal. The system has various
inputs which are processed to produce certain outputs that together, accomplish the overall goal
desired by the organization. There is ongoing feedback among these various parts to ensure they
remain aligned to accomplish the overall goal of the organization.
There are several classes of systems, ranging from very simple frameworks all the way to social
systems, which are the most complex. Organizations are, of course, social systems.
Systems have inputs, processes, outputs and outcomes. To explain, inputs to the system include
resources such as raw materials, money, technologies and people. These inputs go through a
process where they're aligned, moved along and carefully coordinated, ultimately to achieve the
goals set for the system.
Outputs are tangible results produced by processes in the system, such as products or services for
consumers. Another kind of result is outcomes, or benefits for consumers, e.g., jobs for workers,
enhanced quality of life for customers, etc. Systems can be the entire organization, or its
departments, groups, processes, etc.
1.4 IMPORTANCE OF ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
The importance of organizational structure is to provide order and accountability to an
organization. By creating specific job categories for specific task the efficiency of the labour
needed to accomplish the task increases. It would not make sense to have your Accountants
repairing pumps at your facility while your Maintenance staff shipped out product. Dividing the

labor by function then adding employees to the organization by matching their skills with the
function needed is the way an organization can experience the highest level of efficiency.
1.5 REASON FOR SELECTING THE COMPANY
The reason for selecting the company is to get practical knowledge of the theory studied,
and also to study about the various functions of the organization. And to know how planning,
organizing, staffing, directing and controlling is done in a company. And also to study the inter
relationship between the different departments.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The following are the scope of the studyo To get an idea of organisational structure in the organisation.
o To understand what strategies are adopted by the company to compete with other
companies.
o To study the inter relationship between different departments.
o To know about the overall working condition in the organization.

1.7 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objective of the study are following:o To understand the working of different departments of the organisation.
o To understand the organizational structure of the company.
o To understand about the various products and services they provide.
o To get familiarized with the working environment of the business organisation
o To understand the functions of the HR Function in an Organizational Context
o To appreciate the learnt inputs including the reading material with the help of the
exposure to the Organization and
o To seek the considered views of the HR Professionals on the contemporary and futuristic
HR Scenario.
7

o To have a complete knowledge about the system and the processes that helps to build a
committed workforce and also to be aware of the constraints for each and every process

1.8 METHOD OF THE STUDY

Source of data for the Organizational Study at Jyothy Laboratories. Ltd. are Primary Data
and Secondary Data.

Primary Data
Primary Data is the data that is obtained by a study specifically designed for specific
research process for the first time and original in character. The method used in this study is

other purposes and now available for the present study. The following are the secondary data
sources used for the preparation of this report.
o

Websites.

DURATION OF THE STUDY

The duration of the study was ONE WEEK From 05-01-2016 to 12-01-2016. The human
resource department is devoted to providing effective policies, procedures, and people-friendly
guidelines and support within companies. Additionally, the human resource function serves to
make sure that the company mission, vision, values or guiding principles, the company metrics,
and the factors that keep the company guided toward success are optimized. The feel HRM was
one such learning where we got to learn it directly from the organization rather than from books.
8

This project has been a valuable experience for us because; today the organizations dont
compete with each other only in terms of turnover but also in terms of their innovative HR
practices.

1.9 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The Organization Study at Jyothy Laboratories Ltd. had the following limitations:
1. The detailed data of other companies related to the same business was not
available in order to conduct a comparative study.
2. Some of the data are treated as very confidential and hence they are not revealed.
3. The time period available for the study is limited.
4. Most of the employees were busy with their jobs and the time for interaction was
limited.
5. It is not possible to visit all the divisions in the organization.

2.PROFILE OF THE INDUSTRY

2.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE

Products which have a quick turnover, and relatively low cost are known as fast moving
consumer goods (FMCG). FMCG products are those that get replaced within a year. Examples of
FMCG generally include a wide range of frequently purchased consumer products such as
toiletries, soap, cosmetics, tooth cleaning products, shaving products.
Detergents, as well as other non-durables such as glass ware, bulbs, batteries, paper
products, and plastic goods. FMCG may also include pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics,
packaged food products, soft drinks, tissue paper and chocolate bars.
A subset of FMCG is fast moving consumer electronics which include innovative
electronic products such as mobile phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS Systems and
laptops. These are replaced more frequently than other electronic products.
White goods in FMCG refer to household electronic items such as refrigerators, televisions,
music systems etc.
In 2005, the Rs.48000-crore FMCG segment was one of the fast growing industries in India.
According to the A C Nielsen India study, the industry grew 5.3% in value between 2004 and
2005.

2.2 INDIAN FMCG SECTOR

The Indian FMCG sector is the fourth largest in the economy and as a market size of
US$13.1 billion. Well established distribution networks, as well as intense competition between
the organized segments are the characteristics of this sector. FMCG in India has a strong and
competitive MNC presence across the entire value chain. It has been predicted that the FMCG
market will reach to US$ 33.4 billion in 2015 from US $ billion 11.6 in 2003. The middle class
and the rural segments of the Indian population are the most promising market for FMCG, and
give brand makers the opportunity to convert them to branded products. Most of the product
categories like jams, tooth paste, skin care, shampoos etc., in India, have low per capita
10

consumption as well as low penetration level, but the potential for growth in huge. The Indian
economy is surging ahead by leaps and bounds, keeping pace with rapid urbanization, increased
literacy levels, and rising per capita income.
The big firms are growing bigger and small-time companies are catching up as well. According
to the study conducted by AC Nielsen, 62 of the top 100 brands and 27 of these are owned by
Hindustan Lever. Pepsi is at number three followed by Colgate, Nirma.
Coca-Cola and Parle. These are figures the soft drink and cigarette companies have always shied
away from revealing. Personal care, cigarettes, and soft drinks are the three biggest categories in
FMCG. Between them, they account for 35 of the top 100 brands.
