General Purpose Masonry Water Repellents

Silblock LO-N masonry water repellent is approximately 100%
alkylated alkoxy siloxane which may be considered for use in water
repellent treatments of highly alkaline building materials such as
concrete, mortars, porous ceramic bodies (examples of which are
ceramic roofing tiles and facing bricks), calcium silicate bricks and
natural stones. It must be diluted before use in anhydrous solvents
such as aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons (examples of which are
toluene, xylene and mineral spirits).
Silblock WA masonry water repellent is a 60% active silane/siloxane
emulsion. It can offer excellent water absorption reductions and
chloride penetration reductions (NCHRP244 Series II and IV). It may
be considered for use in water repellent treatments of concrete,
plasters/mortars, porous ceramic bodies, lime sand stones, natural
stones and cement fiberboards.

Figure 1 demonstrates that Silblock WA masonry water repellent

can provide performance similar to conventional solvent-base
systems.

Figure 1: The solvent based sealer (Silblock LO-N masonry water

repellent) and the water-based sealer (Silblock WA masonry water
repellent) were both diluted to 5.5% actives and applied by brush
to different substrates. After seven days drying, the coated side was
exposed to water and the water intake was measured by weight.
The result is expressed as a percentage of the untreated uptake.

Silblock WSR Masonry Water Repellent

A New Intermediate for Masonry Water Repellents:
Single-Product Innovation for Protecting Construction
Materials
Silblock WSR masonry water repellent is an innovative
silicone-based emulsion that can combine water resistance and
oil resistance properties in a single additive to be considered for
formulated coatings used to treat masonry construction materials.
By typically offering good penetration on highly alkaline building
materials, Silblock WSR masonry water repellent can deliver
advanced water and oil protection in numerous potential
applications, including concrete, building restorations, bridge
decking, patios and sidewalks, roofing tiles and interior counter
tops. The material can help to reduce efflorescence and to improve
freeze thaw resistance.
Silblock WSR masonry water repellent is a waterborne material
that complements our solvent-based Silblock SO masonry water
repellent. This combined offering gives flexibility of choice for a
formulation that best addresses product requirements from both
a performance and environmental aspect.
With Silblock WSR masonry water repellent, we have combined
oleophobic and hydrophobic behaviors in a single product,
resulting in typically outstanding stain resistance and reduction of
capillary water absorption.

P. 02 Momentive Performance Materials

Silblock* Masonry Water Repellents

Silblock WSR Masonry Water Repellent (continued)

Silblock WSR masonry water repellent may effectively penetrate
a number of building materials, including fresh concrete, plaster,
calcium silicate brick, fibrous cement and expanded concrete, to
deliver water and stain resistance. In addition, it typically allows
excellent water vapor permeability, so surfaces can breathe.
The performance of fluoropolymers as stain resistant materials
is well known. However, they do not offer long-term water
repellency. Alternatively, silicones are effective and widely
used water repellents that can also provide vapor permeability.
However, until now, due to lack of oleophobicity, silicones have
exhibited limited stain resistance properties.
The water absorption and stain performance of new Silblock WSR
masonry water repellent on concrete was compared to standard products and to untreated substrates. For testing, the five
products were diluted to 5% actives by weight. The prepared
emulsions were applied by brush to the substrate at 150 g/m2.
After application, the panels were dried for seven days at room
temperature. For the water absorption measurements, the coated
sides of the specimens were exposed to tap water, and the water
absorption was calculated as water uptake in %. The results are
shown in Figure 2. Silblock WSR masonry water repellent exhibited low water absorption while the fluoropolymers exhibited
significantly higher water absorption.

For the stain resistance test, drops of the following staining

agents were applied to the coated substrates described above:
Old machine oil
Machine oil
Olive Oil
Mustard
Ketchup
The staining agents were left on the specimens for five hours and
then washed off with tap water. The results are shown in Figure 3.
Silblock WSR masonry water repellent was comparable with the
silicone emulsion in terms of reduced water absorption and with
the fluoropolymer in its stain resistance.

Silblock* Masonry Water Repellents

CoatoSil* 2059 Masonry Water Repellent

Non-Fluorine-Based Stain Resistant Penetrant

Silblock Additives for Masonry Paint Systems

The industry is making a strong effort to find alternatives to

fluorocarbons for water repellency and stain resistance protection
for substrates. Silicone-based sealers are of considerable interest
for the improvement of capillary water absorption and minimization of oleophobicity for reactive masonry surfaces like concrete
and marble.

Paint systems are used primarily in the refurbishment and

restoration of buildings. While a mineral-based paint may only
be applied on an untreated substrate, silicone masonry paints
may be applied easily on walls that have already been coated.

CoatOSil 2059 masonry water repellent is the first generation

surface protectant for possible use with concrete and calcium
carbonate based masonry. This non-fluorine-based masonry water
repellent is inherently oloephobic and hyrdrophobic, due to its
superior film forming capabilities. CoatOSil 2059 masonry water
repellent can offer combined reduction in capillary water absorption and organic stain repellency for calcium carbonate masonry
such as quartz, tumbled marble, honed marble, limestone, certain
pavers and terracotta. It is a solvent-less water-based emulsion
of an aminofunctional siloxane. CoatOSil 2059 masonry water
repellent has exhibited performance profiles superior to original
silicone-type water repellents. Potential applications for this water
repellent may include: office buildings, schools, parking garages,
bridges, retaining walls, remedial applications as well as new
construction.

The key characteristics of a properly formulated silicone masonry

paint are the low water permeability (typical of emulsion paints),
or high water vapor permeability (typical of mineral-based paints)
and good weather stability.
Silblock F masonry paint additive and Silblock 3657 masonry
paint additive are solvent-less silicone emulsions to be considered
for use in silicone masonry paints. Silblock F masonry paint
additive can be considered for use with straight acrylics, where
a high transition glass temperature is needed Silblock 3657
masonry paint additive can be considered for use with styrene
acrylics, where a lower glass transition temperature is needed.
If a primer is required, either aqueous Silblock LD masonry water
repellent or aqueous Silblock WA masonry water repellent may
be considered.
