2. OBJECTIVES:: Objective of the course is to disseminate the knowledge of the
basics of the subject to the students. Students will understand the fundamentals
of the subject and its application in mining of coal and mineral deposits.
3. COURSE TOPICS::
Mine Gases:
Mine gases - occurrences, properties, physiological effects, detection, sampling
, analysis, monitoring. Methane layering. Methane drainage. Flame safety lamp
co
nstruction, maintenance, gas testing.
Heat and Humidity:
Sources and effects of heat and humidity in mines. Cooling power of mine air psy
chrometry, Kata thermometer, effective temperature. Basics of air conditioning.
Airflow in Mine Workings:
State of airflow. Square law of mine ventilation. Mine characteristic. Frictiona
l and shock losses. Equivalent orifice. Combination of resistances. Ventilation
control devices. Splitting of air current.
Natural Ventilation:
Causes. Effects of seasonal variation. Calculation of NVP.
Main Mechanical Ventilation:
Centrifugal and axial flow fans
construction, pressure development, characterist
ic curves, series and parallel operations. Forcing versus exhaust ventilation. F
an drift, evasee, diffuser. Reversal of airflow.
Auxiliary and Booster Ventilation:
Auxiliary ventilation by brattice. Auxiliary fans and installation. Booster fans
, installation, Pressure gradient diagram, positioning.
Ventilation Planning:
Classification of ventilation systems
central & boundary, homotropal & antitropa
l, ascensional & descensional. Desirable features of ventilation planning. Vent
ilation layout for mining coal and ore deposits. Principles for calculation of a
ir quantity and pressure requirements.
Ventilation Survey:
Ventilation survey purpose, instrumentation, procedure and data tabulation. Vent
ilation Plans.

Mine Illumination:
Cap lamps. Lamp room layout and organization. Underground lighting from mains. I
llumination standards. Illumination survey.
