Introduction

Some Years ago, In America's cities and beyond, nothing connects us to work, play
and each other like public transit, today's safest, most reliable way to travel.

Passenger rail consistently offers people the safest transportation available.

Ridership is projected to rise by 3.5% annually, nearly doubling over the next 20
years*. Sustaining that safety record is vital. Operation Lifesaver's free outreach
programs offer drivers, pedestrians and communities critical rail safety education to
stay safe around trains and railroad rights-of-way.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) estimates that 35 million

times each weekday, people use public transportation. Such heavy traffic means
that incidents - people and vehicles colliding with public transit trains - sometimes
happen. At Operation Lifesaver, we know that safety education can help prevent
many of those incidents.

Operation Lifesaver's partnership with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA),

initiated in 2002, makes possible effective educational outreach programs for transit
systems.

New Jersey Transit's teen driving program, developed with Operation Lifesaver,
teaches safe driving practices around trains and buses.
Atlanta's Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) partnered with
Georgia Operation Lifesaver on an awareness campaign warning distracted
pedestrians to stay alert and stay alive.
An aggressive public awareness campaign with Texas Operation Lifesaver before the
opening of Austin's Capital MetroRail system helped with its incident-free start.

Transit systems have a unique opportunity to spread the rail safety message to their
riders and the communities they serve. These public awareness products, which
have been reviewed and approved by the OLI National Advisory Council, were
developed by transit agencies and their State OL program partners, and are
available for use by other transit agencies and the general public.

PASSENGERS FACILITATION
In India basically in South Western Railway provides some facilities as follows:

A ) Escorting of important trains of South Western Railway has been taken up from
01.07.2004. Four armed RPF staff are escorting these trains. These escorting staff
are sensitised to the security needs of traveling passengers and provide security
related assistance to them.

B) Access Control
As a initiative to provide better security to passengers and passenger area, the
following important railway stations are provided with access control from
01.07.2004.

Introduction of access control has restricted entry of anti-social elements into

railway premises, thus providing a more crime free atmosphere on Railways.
1) Bangalore City 2) Bangarpet 3) Whitefield 4) Krishnarajpuram
5) Bangalore Cant 6) Hindupur 7) Yeswantpur 8) Tumku
9) Yelahanka 10) Dharmapuri 11) Hubli 12) Mysore
13) Arsikere 14) Davangere 15) Shimoga Town 16) Maddur

C) Campaign Against Drugging

As a part of passenger awareness campaign towards increasing awareness of
passengers to various methods employed by miscreants, laminated pamphlets in
Kannada/Hindi and English/Hindi were distributed among passengers informing
about the modus operandi of drugging of passengers. This crime is well under
control and during the current year 2004, only one case has been reported in SWR.

D) PASSENGERS AWARENESS PROGRAMME

The RPF/SWR/ have conducted special "passengers awareness programme? in
December 2004. Besides distribution of pamphlets in trains and platforms at
originating stations, one musical-cum-drama troop is formed out of RPF staff. They
perform street plays, sing songs for increasing awareness among the passengers
regarding drugging and other security related issues.

The programme has been found very effective. The number of cases of drugging is
going down. These positive efforts of preventing crimes are appreciated by one and
all. Stickers are also being arranged to be pasted in coaches.
Laminated pamphlets, bilingual in Kannada / Hindi and English / Hindi were
prepared giving information regarding modus operandi of drugging of passengers by
miscreants during journey and the same were distributed in trains to increase
passenger awareness against drugging.

E) Controlling of Anti-social elements

Apart from escorting of trains and access control, special raids are conducted to
detect trespassing in Railway premises, unauthorised procuring / supplying of
Railway tickets, nuisance creators, unauthorised hawking, traveling fraudulently or
without proper tickets, males traveling in coaches reserved for females, smoking in
Trains and Railway premises etc. Persons apprehended committing such offences
are prosecuted under the provisions of the Railways Act.

F) Appeal/request to passengers
The security of passengers and controlling of crime against passenger in South
Western Railway is a continuous effort. To supplement the efforts, the following
points related to security of passengers are listed and informed to the traveling
public through issue of pamphlets and also by making announcement through the
public address system available at the Railways stations and loud hailers, thereby
educating the passengers, which has enabled to provide enhanced security to the
traveling public.

1) Travel with limited and manageable luggage.

2) Arrive at the platform with proper tickets at least 15 minutes before departure of
train
3) Do not leave your luggage unattended.
4) Do not purchase / use or sell Railway tickets from / to unauthorised persons.
5) Do not encourage unauthorised hawkers.
6) Do not give alms to beggars.
7) Do not enter reserved coaches without proper reservation / tickets.
8) Male passengers should not enter coaches reserved exclusively for females.
9) Do not travel on rooftop, steps, buffer and engine of the trains

10) Do not carry dangerous or offensive goods in train.

11) Do not smoke in railway premises or in trains.
12) Do not drink liquor in Railway premises or in trains

G ) EDUCATING PASSENGERS ABOUT BOMB THREAT

The prevailing security scenario has posed in new challenge to RPF, arising out of
terrorist attack, bomb threats etc. The RPF has risen to the occasion and the RPF
dog squad located at major stations are provided with sniffer dogs, which are
deployed in short notice, in case of bomb calls and during times of tension
prevailing in the country.

Appeals are made to the passengers through pamphlets passenger announcement

system and loud hailers, not to touch any suspicious and abandoned luggage /
articles, and on noticing such luggage / articles to inform RPF / GRP immediately.
South Western Railway is free from incidents of bomb blasts, however a few cases of
hoax calls are received which are attended to immediately.
Here, we are making an app for the Railway Passenger to make them aware about
the railway system, rules, facilities, comfort zone, help and support. By this app
both can share the information to another immediately with privacy.

Feasibility Study
Problem Statement
The problem definition for the System is to launching an app for Sharing Railway
Awareness for Passengers. The objective of the project is to setting up of an on-line
information/feedback sharing with Railway Team by the Passengers. By this app
both can share the information to another immediately with privacy. Anybody can
download it and use it with his ticket details and mobile number.

Project Description
As we know that it is tedious work to travel in a unknown environment but by this
developed app in that scenario, one can use all the benefits and advantages
provided by the App in order to get the facilities by railway team. Without this app,

passengers are not aware with the railway facilities provided to the customers, one
faces various problems which are :
No Idea about to railway rules
No Idea about sits
Slow data processing
Location wise help facilities
No discussion with railway team for
By providing the information/feedback about the problems through app following
advantages can be seen:Friendly user interface
Time saving
Save paper work
Share many files and data
Available 24/7.

TECHNOLOGY USED

Language Specification
JAVA
Object-oriented programming (OOP) is at the core of Java. In fact, all Java programs are to at
least some extent object-oriented.

Java platform is the hardware or software environment in which a program

runs.

Most platforms can be described as a combination of the operating system

and underlying hardware. The Java platform differs from most other
platforms in that it's a software-only platform that runs on top of other
hardware-based platforms.
The Java platform has two components:
The Java Virtual Machine
The Java Application Programming Interface (API)
