TSB 2009- 051-A

SEVERITY: Medium - Operational

PRO D U CT S A FF E CT E D:

Mi10k running M-EOSn v9.8.0, v9.8.1 and v9.8.2; v9.9.0, v9.9.1 and v9.9.2.
CORRECTED IN RELEASE:

The fix for this issue has been included in M-EOSn v9.8.3 and v9.9.3, currently available from
Brocade.

BULLETIN OVERVIEW

All Mi10k directors running M-EOSn v9.8.0, v9.8.1, v9.8.2, v9.9.0, v9.9.1, v9.9.2 operating in
McDATA Fabric Mode only could experience a CTP/LIM/LMQ out of memory condition which
could result in CTP loss of manageability or LIM/LMQ issue with 16/32 ports going
offline/uninstalled if the Mi10K director is continued to run at any of these firmware revisions.

Brocade produces and publishes Technical Support Bulletins to OEMs, partners and customers that have a
direct, entitled, support relationship in place with Brocade.
Please contact your primary service provider for further information regarding this topic and applicability for your
environment.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Each time a zone set is activated or a device logs in/out of a port on an Mi10k director, a memory
management condition occurs on the active CTP and LIM/LMQ cards. A small amount of memory
is used up on the CTP and LIM/LMQ card during these processes. Over time the CTP and
LIM/LMQ will run out of memory and loss of manageability and/or LIM/LMQ restart/failure will
occur.
RISK ASSESSMENT
All Mi10k directors running M-EOSn v9.8.0, v9.8.1, v9.8.2, v9.9.0, v9.9.1, v9.9.2 operating in
McDATA Fabric Mode only could experience a CTP/LIM/LMQ out of memory condition which
could result in CTP loss of manageability or LIM/LMQ with 16/32 ports going offline/uninstalled
if continued to run on these firmware revisions.
SYMPTO MS
One or all of the following symptoms may occur:
1) LIM/LMQ card restart which causes all devices (up to 32 ports) to momentarily
logout/login to the port card.
2) LIM/LMQ failure impacting 16 to 32 ports on the port card.
3) Loss of mangeability (LOM) of the management console and Mi10k director. An event 40
may also get logged in the director event log when the LOM condition occurs.

WORKAROUND
There are no work arounds to prevent the issue from occurring other than upgrading firmware but if
the problem occurs, the below steps are recommended to recover from the issue:
Customers observing LIM/LMQ card failures when operating on the above code levels should
escalate the issue to their support provider who will then analyze error data to determine if the issue
was caused by the memory management issue. If the issue is determined to be memory management
issue, a reseat of the failed LIM/LMQ card will be recommended.
For loss of manageability issues, a CTP switchover will correct the memory issue in the CTP card
and recover the loss of manageability to the Mi10k director.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
The majority of FICON customers do not change zones so there is no need for them to take
corrective action. For customers that make zoning changes in FICON environments, typically these
customers have a mix of FICON and native FCP, the recommendation is to migrate to M-EOS
v9.7.2 or M-EOSn v9.7.2. For all other customers, Defect 245288 (LOM issue) and 246360
(LIM/LMQ issue) have been added to the M-EOSn v9.8.3 and v9.9.3 code to address these
problems. Brocade highly recommends upgrading to M-EOSn v9.8.3, if running M-EOSn v9.8.0,
v9.8.1, v9.8.2; or M-EOSn V9.9.3, if running M-EOSn v9.9.0, v9.9.1, v9.9.2 to correct these
problems.
