INTRODUCTION
The Boarding and Alighting Count Survey is performed to
analyze the volume of passengers and to determine which
locations in the route have the greatest transit demand. However,
this also allows other information beyond the boarding and
alighting activity to be collected as well. This includes data on
passenger maximum load capacities, on-time performance, and
the ability to identify major activity centers based on stop-level
boarding and alighting information.
Our group, topnotchers, conducted a boarding and alighting
survey last February 05, 2016. This survey was done while riding
a Public Utility Bus (PUB) and was conducted to see if whether our
timeslot of transporation (12:00nn 01:00pm) is a congested
time of travel from St. Thomas Square to UP Ayala Land
Technohub, back and forth (1:00pm-2:00pm) . The task was to
count every person who aboard and leave/alight the bus in 16
different stopover.
This study aims to conduct a preliminary analysis on which
place has the most number of people who board and alight and to
determine the number of passengers during the given period of
time.

OBSERVATION AND CONCLUSION

As we performed the Boarding and Alighting survey, we
observed that not all station has its own bus stop or shed.
Page | 26

Second, though some have waiting shed or a bus stop, it seems

useless because buses do not stop on those designated stopover.
Third, people tend to aboard and alight from bus though the bus
is in the middle of the road and it is not on its designated stop
over. Passengers dont bother if their lives are at risk, and it
seems so normal.
Throughout the survey we observed that the volume of
passengers during 12:00NN-1:00PM, wherein the route of the
transportation is from St. Thomas Square to UP Technohub, are
least compared to the number of passengers during peak hours.
As a result of this, we didnt spend a hard time on riding a bus on
St. Thomas Square and were able to occupy a sit. However,
during 1:00PM-2:00PM, wherein the route us from UP technohub
to St. Thomas Square, we had experienced a difficulty on riding a
bus and the number of passengers is greater than the first survey.
Due to this scenario, we spend a quiet long time waiting for the
bus to arrive and when we enter the bus, there were no vacant
seats for us to occupy.
Next, those 16 stopovers are the places where most of
the people alight from bus, so the conductor keeps on announcing
those stopovers along the way. During our trip from St. Thomas
Square to UP technohub, we noticed that the most number of
female and male passengers who rode the bus occurs in St.
Thomas Square. However, the number of male and female who
boarded in the bus drops to zero in Blumentritt, Timog, NBS QC,
Hi Top, Lung Center, PhilCoA and UP Technohub. Moreover, we can
observed that UP technohub has the greatest number of male and
female passengers who alighted from the bus. On the other hand,
there is no female and male passenger alighted HiTop, NBS QC,
Timog, Banawe, Blumentritt, Vicente Cruz, Lacson Avenue, Ust
Overpass and St. Thomas Square. And during our travel from
Technohub to St. Thomas Square, we perceived that the most
number of female and male passengers who rode the bus occurs
Page | 27

in UP Technohub. However, the number of male and female who

boarded in the bus drops to zero in Philcoa, Wild Life Center,
HiTop,Timog, Fishermall, Sto. Domingo Church, Banawe, Rotonda,
Blumentritt, Vicente Cruz, Lacson, Ust Overpass and St. Thomas
Square. Apparently, St. Thomas Square has the greatest number
of male and female passengers who alighted from the bus. But,
there is no female and male passenger alighted philcoa, NHA,
Wild Life Center, HiTop, Timog, Blumentritt, Lacson Avenue and
Ust Overpass. Lastly, the conductor is not vigilant since our
groupmate, Martin, tried not to pay the ticket, fortunately he
succeeded.
As a result of the survey, the volume of passengers that
travels from St. Thomas Square to UP technohub during 12:00N to
1:00PM is minimal compared to the number of passengers during
peak and rush hours. However, during 1:00PM to 12:00NN, the
volume of passengers that travels from UP technohub to St.
Thomas Square is greater than the other one. So, people should
have a lot of patience while travelling. Based from our
observations above, we can say that some of the passengers as
well as bus drivers tend to disobey simple traffic rules and laws
execute by the local government and if they will continue this
kind of misbehavior, accidents is possible to happen.
RECOMMENDATION
To improve transportation system in the metro, government
must implement an intelligent transport system, like having Bus
Rapid Transit. Buses should have an increment in size, and if
possible, even floor system bus could also be best option to
accommodate all the commuters and for the rising number of
vehicles in Philippines.
For the commuters as well as drivers, one must strictly obey
government ordinance and should be well-discipline since this is
for the benefit and safety of all citizen. The government should
Page | 28

not be afraid of cutting the ties between commuters and their

misbehaviors while commuting because at the end of the day, we
are the one who will be affected and benefit the most. In addition
to this, visibility of traffic officials is needed and increasing the
fine for those who will disobey the law might be an effective
solution, since we hate paying expensive fines.
