END FRAMES

I started work on the cradle by building t he

end frames. There are a couple of 0plio,.,
when making these frames. IOU can build a
f,..<\me
with a solid raised panel (as 1did). Or
you cansimpli~' it by making Ihcpancl out or
plywood (Ilat, without the chamf..,'I<rlborder). Or. to make it even simpler, you can
make the entire end piece out of solid wood
(no frarne at all).
SOL1l)WOODENDS.To make solid wood
ends. start by edge-gluing enough 4/4
stock ("II' actual thickness) to form
blanks that are 22" wide and 19' lonll, :;('e
Fig. 1. After the glue dri es , plane the
blanks nat and cut the panels .0 the sides

Then trace and cut nut the top profile.

see pa~ 24.) Once the top profile is CUL to
shape. drill counterbored holes 10 screw the
end panels to the basket sides and also drill a

Finally, round the corners and I'OUIthe

is setting the miter gauge for the shoulder

with the angled edge of the block and lock it

use the angleS(!tlinJ{ block to reset the

17. Then make passes on the other side.
BRING TO PINAL THICKNESS. Test fit
comer or the tenon in the mortise> in the
rails, soe ~'ig. 18. If necessary raise lite
blade in very slight increments and shave
just a little off each face until the tenon r.t~
the mortise.
CUT TO SHAPE. Continue on the top rail
by cutting the arched profile on the bottom
edge. see Fig. 19. Then cut away the
profile on the top edge.
NOli" the top rail is starting to take
shape. The next step is to trim d01l"1Ithe
width of the tenons to.fit the mortises.
~'ARKTENON WlJ)TH. The tenon is laid
out so it's perpendicular to the angled
shoulders, see Fig. 20. J used a steel rule to
lay out the tenon, by pressing the end of
the rule tightly against the tenon shoulder
and drawing: lines to indicate the width of
the tenon.
CUTTOSIZE. ;o.;e,"t.cut the tenons to size
with back saw. To lessen l he risk of
cutting into the shoulders. I made cuts
along the angled shoulders first. stopping
at the width lines. see Fig. 21. Then I cut
down on the end of the tenon.
FIN"ISHlNG TOUCIf&S. Th complete the
tenon. I cleaned up the shoulder with a
sharp chisel, see Fig. 22. Then, if the ends
of the mortise were left round, there's one
last step. Round the edges orthe tenons to
match the mortises. see Fig. 23.

WOOOSMlTH

fIT BOTTOM RAil

\\'hen the tenons for the LOprails arc finished. the tenons 011 the bottom rails can be
cut. This is a cut-to-fit operation. The key
thing here it< not the overall length of the
bottom rail. bUL the distance br'"wl tile
shoulders of the tenons. This is determined
by the distance bet ween the angled stiles.
So, temporariJy clamp the stiles to the LOp

rail. see Filt. 24.

Then to keep the wedges from slipping when
the clamps are tightened. I ",ounted dowels

the rail lit i. cutting the tenon on one end to

and cut both faces of the tenon.)
MARK OPPOSITESHOULDER. Now. the
inside measurement between the totiles can
be transferred directly to the otber end of
tbe bottom rail.
To do this, lay the rail down so the tenon
is on tOP of the stile with th. shoulder
butted tighlly again.t the inside edge of
the stile. _ Fig. 2.';. Then mark thv in.idCl
edge of the opposite stile on the rail,
~IAKE THE TENON. Now the tenon on
this end can be cut w length. Note: Begin
by cutting outside the line. The objt'Ct is to
shave a little off the shoulde rs until they fit
bet ween the stiles with no gaps. see J'-ig.
26. Finally. cut the tenon length LOthe
depth of the mortise. see Fig-.27.
ClIT GROOVES

The Iasl step L< cutting the groo,('l, for the

panel on the inside edge of all frame pieces,
To do this. I mounted a slot cutler ill the
router table, see Fig. 28.
Shop Note: 'l'hI! slot cutter tends to tear
the edges of the groove. To lessen the tearing, make a light pass (h'" deep) fet.odingthe
workpiece backward. (That is. feed the
workpiece from lea to lighL)'l'hen make the
full-depth cut, feeding from light to left.
ROUT~'TU.F.s.To get the feel of roulinJ{
,\lith the slot cutler, 1 routed the grooves m
the eules firs t. The groove starts at one
mortise and ends at another, r clamped
stop blocks LOan extension on the fenee to
prevent cvershooting the cut. see fig. 2.~.
ROUT BOTTOM RAIL. Routing the 00\tom rail is the same as the stiles, except the
groove is straight through from end to end.
ROUT TOP RAIL To rout the groove on
the arched inner edge of the top rail, the
workpiece is fed freehand against the bit'$
pilot. see Fill. 29. Note: A freehand pass
near a slot cutter i:o: scary, ~"orsafety, 1put
the guard in place and used a grout trowel
(see ll00d0mitl! No. ~7)to glip the rail.
CIiECKP1'll As one last check, I clamped
the frame together, see Fig. 30. Then I was
ready to make the arched-top panel.
