About Me.
My name is Adam and I am currently studying
Bsc Product Design Technology at Loughborough University.
I am a very hard working, positive and collaborative working to
work with. I like to think Im a very outgoing person who enjoys
skiing, travelling and being creative.
By the end of this year I want to have greater knowledge
within both electronics and mechanics, I would also like
to understand simple programming skills.
Here is my Portfolio.

Sustainable Design

The Project
For this project I was given a design brief with less than a week to meet. The brief was to
design a product to create a beautiful and responsible solution that supports domestic
solar PV systems. I had to make sure the product lead to innovation that makes better
use of solar energy, and has a high value aesthetic.
This project, research was key and I wanted to solve a simple household problem with
my design. For the chosen design I needed to show the product would work and the
problem would be solved, so further investigation and technology calculations were
needed to support my idea.

During the day the solar panels

store electrical energy within the
reusable battery.

The user can then pour cold water into

the bowl or reheat the same soapy
water again.

Here shows the lid used to drain

washed dishes
When the user comes to wash up they
can turn on the bowl allowing hot water
to be created.

Draining lid

Product Features
-9.5L of water will be heated to washing up temperature of 39
degrees Celsius
-Product only uses sustainable energy
-Bowl has an aluminium insulated lining to retain heat longer

Insulated Bowl
Female Thread
Removable Plug
Stainless Steel Plate

-Removable plug catches large food particles, helping to prevent sink

blockages

Induction Coil

-Draining lid helps keep the water warm for longer

-The lid can be reversed and used as washing up rack
-Large convenient carry handles

MaleThread
BatteryBase

The user can then enjoy washing up

using the Eco wash knowing it saves
wastage of water and reduces
household bills.

How is the water heated?

When you turn on the bowl, an electric current runs through the induction coils (situated in the base),
generating a fluctuating magnetic field, but no heat on the bowl itself. However, once the stainless steel
blocks come into contact with the induction coil the magnetic field induces, creating the steel blocks to
heat up which then warms the water. The temperature of the water will only stay at 39 degrees Celsius
and not higher (washing up temperature).
The design and User.

The design form and style needs to be targeted to both household users so that there isnt any
bias within the design that prevents either gender from buying and using the product. The design
needs to be styled in a way that it looks high end that may encourage more users to save energy
and water at the same time.

The energy required to heat 9.5L of

water are 0.8kw for two 15 minute
intervals (2 washes daily).

Solar powered rechargeable

battery required is a 4.54 Amps
with 1000 watts.

As much as 25% of your

households energy bill comes
from heating water.

If you waste 20L of heated water

every day for a year this is an
equivalent of wasting approximately
44 a year.

Child's Mountain Scooter

The Project
This year one project was to design, develop and then create using CAD software
called CREO of a Childs scooter. My design theme and form was based on an
all-weather and terrain suitable product.
The design represents a viable child's toy and where the form gives the impression of
a mechanically robust, manufactured product.

This project was the first time I had to use my design and Creo skills to represent a working product with multiple
components.

Designed For All Environments

From what I have learnt from this project, my CAD skills are greatly developing and improving in both Creo and
keyshot.

User Experience Design

The Project
The project was to design a smartphone app that is aligned with entrepreneurship. The
project was split into two halves. The first half included User Research then interviews
with existing business owners and entrepreneurs. Then from the research, I then needed
to design and test for a specified user and market of my app idea. The second half was
using a software called Axure to create a working prototype of the application.

How the My Market app works

About the App

MyMarket allows small scale entrepreneurs to promote themselves by booking stalls at local markets.
Local markets are accessible and an inexpensive opportunity for new client relationships to be made.
MyMarket is especially helpful to young entrepreneurs with little free time on their hands.

Research/Interviews
To help understand the user needs and the
market, I interviewed existing business owners
and entrepreneurs.

UserTesting/Feedback
Using a possible target user for the app , I
allowed the user to walk through the app with
as little help as possible, to see how they react
and monitor the interaction with the app.

Concept Sketchs
Pages and pages of ideation of low fidelity sketches
were created for each layout of each page for the
app.

Axure
After further development from the user
feedback. I created a working prototype
of the app on Axure.

I have learnt to broaden the experience and skills of the student

designer to include knowledge of, and competence with, UX design
principles and their application to the design of interactive products
understanding of the user experience design process including
identifying key users; creating personas; storyboarding; designing
and iterative testing.
I have also improved my communication skills interviewing and
presenting my ideas. I feel I have the knowledge and the skills to
design and develop a successful working device application.

Manufacturing For Injection Moulding

The Project
Within a team we selected one of our injection moulded widget designs which we had
designed in an earlier project. The widget needed to promote an existing business and
could be handed out free to customers. The widget we selected would be a dual shot Silver
line paint scraper. Within the project I used a variety of different skills to manufacture the
blocks of aluminium and steel. The manufacture of the blocks and inserts needed to be
made by both hand and CNC. Working within a team and making sure manufacturing to set
deadlines really helped to meet the end target.

Mass Production Proposal

How will the widget be mass manufactured?

5 Steel inserts, 2 Aluminium blocks and 2

Alignment pins were needed for a successful
widget.

As our mould design is dual shot injection moulded, a

longer cycle time of 6.9 seconds is allocated for the injection moulding process.
The 6.9 seconds cycle time allows for 2 fill times,2 hold
times, 2 freeze times, as well as an opening, preparation and
closing time.
Because our mould has a fairly long cycle time it was
required to have multiple cavities in one mould for the
mass manufacture. This means a mould tool with 3 cavities
is needed to meet the manufacturing target of 3 million in
13 weeks.
Below is the suggested mould layout. Due to the complex
nature of dual shot moulding it wasnt possible to arrange
the layout in a standard parallel or radial design.

Mass production cycle time per

6.9 seconds
To make 3,000,000 (+0.5% waste)
it takes 1926.25 hours
For mass production 3 widget
cavities in a mould will be needed
1,001,500 injections in 13 weeks

This project was one of the most challenging but it helped me to develop both new and existing skills, as I now feel very
confident manufacturing within a workshop. However, what made the widget so successful was teamwork. Teamwork was
key when it came to delegating tasks in an efficient manner to complete the project.

Storage Drinks Bottle

The Project
For this project I wanted to concentrate on mainly ideation and design by experimenting
with different methods of design. I wanted to design a product that would help runners
and gym users who dont want to keep their phone, keys, money etc. in their pocket.
The storage bottle allows the user to slide the bottom base off and place their personal
objects in the storage compartment. The bottle also has a phone slide in slot that allows
the phone to be securely attatched. The top half has twist cap where you can fill the bottle
with your drink.

This project helped improve my design thinking and the ways to

present my ideas. These included hand sketching, rendering and the
method of innovation.

Ideation was key in this project. I wanted to maximize the creative process of generating, developing,
and communicating new ideas, where an idea is understood as a basic element of thought that can
be either visual, concrete, or abstract. I wanted to use this project to experiment with different
methods of innovation.
The methods of innovation included Problem solution, Derivative idea, Targeted innovation and
Symbiotic idea. These methods in different ways contributed to the final design.

This project I would like to further develop and maybe eventually go into manufacturing
of this idea as I believe it has potential for the desired users.
From this project I have learnt to further develop my ideation and to become more
adventurous with creative thinking and designing. I will carry on this way of thinking
throughout all my upcoming projects.

Mechanics and Electronics

The Project
Having a product that looks good is ideal, but having knowledge on how to make the
product work is key. Within this section I will show some mechanics and electronics
projects that I have completed over the last 2 years.
Within electronics I have learnt a wide range of skills from soldering a PCB together
to programming on MPlabs.
For the mechanics module I have been introduced to further aspects of Engineering
Science including Statics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, and their role in the design
process. I have developed analytical skills for the solution of problems in mechanical
science and apply mechanical knowledge to the design and fabrication of a complex
mechanical device.

Mechanics
The Spaghetti Bridge Project

Using a variety of software, a circuit containing a 7 segment LED display and a circuit
containing a braille display were created showing an eight letter word and the braille
numbers 0-9.

The first mechanics project was the spaghetti bridge challenge. The aim of the
Spaghetti Bridge Project was to design and manufacture a bridge constructed
from entirely spaghetti and glue that was strong enough to hold a mass of 2kg
with a factor of safety of 3.

Predicted calculated weight

of the spaghetti bridge to
withstand was 6kg.

The Squash Ball Thrower Project

C-programming Project
In this project I was to design and simulate (using the MPLAB IDE) software written
in the C-programming language for a system capable of driving a 7-segment LED
display.

The project is to design, manufacture and test a

purely mechanical squash ball launcher which can
throw a squash ball the furthest.

Manufacturing of the squash ball launcher begins in April.

Electronics

LED 7 Segment Display Project

Predicted squash ball will travel 664.67m

assuming the device has no mass, is 100%
efficient and there is no air resistance.

Created schematic of the circuit using a

software called design sparks.

built in MPLABS.

Beard Styler
The Project
This project I had to analyse an existing Mark Hill hair curler, from the analysis I needed to
redesign and model a new product with a new unique market. This product was designed
towards men with beards. From the analysis I needed to make sure the product could contain
existing and new components internally. I then had to design and form a model towards the
internal size.

What makes the beard styler successful is a detailed analysis of the

existing product to help improve key areas such as aesthetics to
sustainability. Key ways to help with analysis were the way the user
interacts with the product and how the product makes the user
feel.

Comfort and sustainability was key as well as making the

grip from recycled rubber, the grip curves to fit both
finger and palm.

Foam modeling was used to help to visualize

the form of the product.

The viggo beard styler is a compact

product with the quantity of material
used being halved, making the cost of
manufacture cheaper overall.
