Using 3D to Diagnose Breast Disease

he Saint Peters Breast Center,

the first in Central Jersey to be
granted a full accreditation from
the National Accreditation Program for
Breast Centers (NAPBC), now offers
3D mammography. The 3D Genius
Breast Imaging System developed by
Hologic, Inc., makes it possible to more
accurately detect breast cancer.
Every year more than 200,000 women
in the United States are diagnosed with
breast cancer. Three-dimensional
mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, has been proven to
effectively diagnose breast cancer
at earlier stages. This new technology,
available at Saint Peters Womens
Imaging Center, allows radiologists,
physicians who specialize in reading
mammograms, to see breast tissue
with better detail. 3D/tomosynthesis
is a type of digital mammography in
which mammogram machines are
used to take thin slice one millimeter
images through breast tissue from
different angles. Conventional
mammography creates a twodimensional image of the breast
from two X-ray images, whereas the
3D shows the thin slices from different
angles.
We are excited to have this new technology available to offer our patients.
Tomosynthesis is a very promising
breast imaging modality, especially for
women with dense breast tissue, says
Susan McManus, MD, Director of the
Saint Peters Breast Center. In addition,
studies show that 3D imaging reduces
overlap of tissue which may lead to
unnecessary call back, need for
further testing and false positives.
Dr. McManus explains that a call back
is when a patient is
asked to return to have
additional images/
testing to further clarify
a finding questioned on
the mammogram.

Susan McManus, MD

In a nationwide study made public by the

Radiological Society of North America,
the return rate (call back rate) was lower
for women who had 3D mammograms.
In this study, the researchers compared
mammogram results from women who
had a 3D mammogram to results from
women who had conventional 2D
mammograms. Patients who had 3D
mammograms had 15.6 percent fewer
false positives than those who had 2D
mammograms. Further evidence of the
effectiveness of this technology was a
study published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA)
which showed that 3D mammography
detected up to 41 percent more
invasive, potentially deadly, breast
cancers.
At Saint Peters, 3D mammography is
used for both screening and diagnostic
testing. A screening mammogram is a
routine mammogram used when the
patient is not having any signs or

symptoms of breast disease. A diagnostic mammogram is used to evaluate

a patient who is having a specific
symptom or problem. A doctors
prescription is needed in order to have
a 3D mammogram.

In addition to mammography, the

Womens Imaging Center provides:
Stereotactic and ultrasound guided

breast needle biopsies

Breast ultrasound
DEXA scans
General ultrasound studies for women
