(HEAT AND TEMPERATURE)

By : Jelita Shaleha Sibarani (4133121020)
Subject : Physics
Class / Semester : X Natural Science / ODD
Highlights :Heat and Temperature
Allocation of Time : 30 minutes

A.

Basic Competence
To analyze the influence of heat and heat movement in daily life
Indicators
To conclude the definition of temperature
To conclude the definition of Heat
To select the instrument of Temperature
To explain the instrument of temperature and their scales
To calculate the conversion of thermometer scale
Learning Objectives
Through the activity, Students can conclude the sense of temperature.

Phenomenon
Never drink iced tea, iced milk, syrup etc? Well, when making iced tea, usually we
mix hot water or warm water in a glass with ice cubes. Hot water or warm water has a
higher temperature, while ice has a lower temperature. Having touched a few
moments, a mixture of ice cubes and hot tea was turned into iced tea. The same
process occurs when we mix hot water with cold water. After contact, the hot and cold

water turned into warm water.

Formulate Problem
Based on the description above, what can be extracted from that phenomenon ?
Answer:
If the objects that have a temperature difference of contact with each other, there will
be heat transfer or often called heat from high-temperature objects toward the lowtemperature objects. Heat transfer stalled after touching objects reach the same
temperature. For example if we mix hot water with cold water, heat usually move
from the hot to the cold water. When we enter the hot water into the cold water, heat

moves from warmer water to the cold water. Heat will stop flowing once the water

that has been mixed earlier reached the same temperature.

Do Experiment
Goals : Demonstrate heat and temperature
Tools and materials
NAME OF TOOLS
Glass

NAME OF MATERIALS
Hot Water

Thermometer of Celcius
Thermometer of Fahrenheit
Basin (Baskom)
Water Heater

Cold Water
Water

Prosedure
Experiment I
1) Pour the Hot Water, Cold Water, and Water in each plastic glass
2) Put hand in each plastic glass one by one
3) Conclude the definition of temperature depend on this experiment
Experiment 2
1) There are two kind of thermometer that used. The first one is Alcohol
type and the second one is mercury type.
2) Heat the water using the water heater until 50 degree celcius and
measure with both thermometers
3) Observe some differences between them and see the advantages and

F.

weakness of those thermometer.

Experiment 3
1) Put the hot water into a basin about of basin and measure the

temperature
2) Pour the cold water into a glass and also measure the thermometer
3) Put the cold water glass into Basin that has been filled by the hot water.
4) Observed what happened in that experiment.
Result of Experiment
Experiment I
Based on what is perceived by the sense of touch, we say a body is hotter than
the other object or an object is cooler than other objects. hot water has a higher
temperature while the cold water has a lower temperature. If the water is
coolder, the lower the temperature. Inversely, the hotter the water, the higher

the temperature.
Experiment 2
From Observation, We see several differences that,
Mercury has more shine color than Alcohol, So the thermometer that
use mercury easily to read than the other one.

Mercury can able to measure temperature that has higher temperature

but Alcohol cant. In the other hand, Alcohol can able to measure lower
temperature but Mercury cant.

Experiment 3
From Experiment we get that, Cold water has increase temperature and Hot

water that in the basin has decrease temperature.

G. Analysis
1. From your first experiment, can you conclude the definition of temperature ?
Answer :
From the experiment 1, we cant make sure the degree of temperature
accurately, just use our sense about the condition of every water. The size of
the heat or coldness of an object is called temperature.
2. From your second experiment, would you like to analyze the advantages and
the weakness of alcohol thermometer and mercury alcohol ?

c. Alcohol is a colorless, so

it should be colored so
easy to be seen.

3. From your third experiment, can you conclude definition of heat based on the
experiment ?
Answer :
In the third experiment, the energy of hot water moves to the cold water
because the hot water has high temperature. The energy that move is called
heat. Heat is one of energy form.

H. Conclusion
From the experiment, we can conclude that :
The definition of temperature can we get from experiment that using our hand
to feel about heat and cold of water, the size of heat and coldness is called

Temperatures
There are some advantages and weakness of every kind of filler thermometer
type that alcohol and mercury.
