Case study: Ghazala

Ghazala is a mum of
two with her own
successful online
business. When I
meet people at the
school gates theyre
surprised I have my own business. she
says. It all started 8 years ago when she
enrolled on a sewing course at HACL: I
was always interested in sewing. My mum
was a tailor and I grew up watching her, but
I couldnt do it myself.
Recalling what she learnt, Ghazala says,
The course was a real eye-opener. What
was great about the teacher was she was a
perfectionist and so we learnt to sew to a
really professional standard. I learnt a lot
about fabric, discovered a wealth of places
I could buy materials locally and saw a
project through from the beginning to the
end. I had fun too its nice to learn with
other people and not just sit at home trying
to do things by yourself.

After doing the course, Ghazala started

her business making Wheat Warmers
bags which can be heated in the
microwave and used to ease aches and
pains. Before starting the business she
contacted her previous teacher for advice.
Wheat Warmers became so successful,
she only makes bespoke bags herself
now, while most production is outsourced
to a factory. The thing that surprised me
most is the lovely feedback I get. I receive
lovely emails from people about how their
wheat bag has helped with injuries or
pain. Its a nice thing to do. She continues
to do courses with HACL and last year she
took Photoshop for Beginners to use on
pictures for her website.
My advice to other people would be if you
have an idea or you want to do something,
go for it! Courses are affordable and
knowledge is everything; you can only gain
from doing a course.

Understanding the level of your course

Route Maps

All of our courses are mapped against

national standards. This means that you
can be confident that the level of the course
that you join with HACL will be the same as
one you join anywhere else. So, whether its
a GCSE maths class or a Diploma in
Floristry, it will have the same value to you

(and to your employers) as it does to other

learners all over the country.

The route maps are designed to guide you

through your course choices. There is a
route map for each section in the brochure
and you should read down the first column
to find the closest description to your own
circumstances, and then along the row to
give you an indication of your course
options. The information beside it provides

For more information about courses, come
to one of our Information, Advice and
Guidance (IAG) Open Days at our Adult
Learning Centres. If you are unable to attend
please telephone the relevant centre where
one of our staff will be happy to help you.

What can I expect at an

IAG Open Day?
You can expect a warm welcome. Our open
days are designed to support you in finding
the course thats right for you. Teaching
staff will be available to talk you through a
range of options, answer any questions you
have and guide you all the way.
The open days are arranged on a firstcome first-served basis. We work as
quickly and efficiently as possible but it is
important that every learner feels fully

informed about their options so please be

prepared for delays.
If you choose a course with a qualification

Once weve agreed the best course with
you, well help you to enrol and youll be on
your way to getting that qualification or

IAG throughout your course working towards your goals

We also run progression evenings
throughout the year where existing learners
can receive guidance about next steps. All
of our centres are equipped with
information about where to go for careers
advice and further learning opportunities,
both within our service and outside of it.

As part of your course, your tutor will help you

to track your progress and offer advice about
next steps and you may have the opportunity
to meet learners who have already completed
the programme that you are studying, who
can give you the inside scoop on passing the
course and flourishing beyond it.

Fees
HACL is a service of the London Borough of
Hillingdon that attracts public funding from
national government through the Skills
Funding Agency. This means that our fees are
influenced and subsidised by local and national
government, which in turn allows us to keep
costs as low as possible for our learners.
Two years ago, national government
introduced a fee structure for learners aged 24
or over who wish to study a course at level 3 or
above. The funding for these learners has
been redirected away from colleges and into
24+ Advanced Learning Loans, which operate
through Student Finance England. For more
information, please see the next section.
For all our other courses, the government
subsidises the fees for everyone who is
entitled to public funding. We ask each
learner for eligibility evidence at enrolment
to ensure that fees can stay as low as
possible, which allows us to provide a wide
range of courses to residents of Hillingdon.
The fees published in the brochure take
account of this subsidy. However, reducing
government subsidies may mean we will be
unable to provide some courses, such as
those with very few learners enrolled, and
where this is the case we will provide as
much notice as possible to learners.
Hillingdon residents benefit from an
additional subsidy from the council, and again
this has been taken into account prior to
publishing the fees. This is shown as the A
rate. The council subsidy does not apply for
learners who live outside the London Borough
of Hillingdon, where the D rate applies. For
this reason, we request that learners bring
proof of identification/address at enrolment.
The B rate is for Hillingdon residents with
benefits listed on the enrolment form or
aged 60+
The C rate is for Hillingdon residents and
out-of-borough residents who are unemployed
and in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance,
Employment Support Allowance Work
Related Activity Group (ESA-WRAG) or any

state benefit and are looking for work. Fees
may vary based on individual circumstances.
The 24+ loan rate is for learners over the age
of 24 wishing to study on certain level 3
programmes (for these courses, the other
prices are for learners aged 19 to 23 only).
These fees are listed below against each
course under the headings A, B, C or D. If you
are unsure which rate applies to you, please
do not hesitate to ask at one of our centres
where staff will be delighted to help you.

Advanced Learning Loans

Are you aged 24 or over and thinking about
joining a long qualification course at Level 3
or above? The government has introduced
Advanced Learning Loans to help learners aged
24 and over in Further Education pay the course
fees for eligible courses. The 24+ Loans
operate through Student Finance England.
You can choose to pay all or part of the fee
yourself. You can pay this in full before you
start your course, or you can ask about our
instalment plan to spread the cost over the
first few months.
Alternatively you can apply for an Advanced
Learning Loan. Should you choose to do so
its easy to apply, your household income
isnt taken into account and there is no credit
check. You wont have to pay anything back
until your income is over 21,000 a year.
For more information on 24+ Advanced
Learning Loans go to:
nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/
advancedlearningloans
These fees are listed against each eligible
course at level 3 or above in the relevant
section of the brochure but please note, not all
level 3 courses are eligible for student loans.
It is important that you consider your own
circumstances and look into all options.

Case study:
Marta
Marta is a qualified
primary teacher
who came to the UK
five years ago. She
found a job in a
supermarket but wanted to return to work
in early years education. A careers adviser
suggested she attend an English course
and she joined a level one class at HACL
in 2013.
Marta has now passed levels one and two
in English Functional Skills and says the
course has helped her immensely: Now I
am much more confident when I have to
talk with people. I used to feel stressed
about speaking out loud in a group in case
I made mistakes. Now there is no longer
that barrier. She attributes this to the
people on the course: Our group was
pretty close and the teacher made a nice
atmosphere for us all. We did a group
project and raised money for a local
charity. It brought us together and made us
into a team.

Title your skills for employment...

Even better, Marta has secured a job in a

nursery: I love working with children
again and I think its thanks to the course
that I found the job. My writing has
improved so my CV was better. I could also
understand the questions in the interview,
which was my biggest problem before.
Marta wants to do her GCSE English next
year and find work in a primary school.
If I had to give some advice to future
learners, I would tell them to take the
course seriously, attend all classes and do
the homework. Anybody can do it.

understanding of grammar so it really

improved my written English. It was a good
confidence building exercise and working
in a group, you can learn from each other.
The teacher was very approachable,
encouraging and supportive.

The classes were very good; it was a small

group and that five week course was all
about how to support your children with
their English. It was interesting to find out
how they were being taught.

Now Marc works in a University as a

technical services manager and says the
course helped him to write the application
letter. I would say to other people its
good to do the course and if youre looking
for work it brings your English up to a good
level. If you have doubts during the course,
ask your teacher; theyre happy to explain
things again. Even if youre not confident
just go for it.

Marc then enrolled on a five week course

on supporting children with numeracy and
a longer course to do level 2 English. It

A traineeship is a voluntary work placement

a further course that develops your

Learning at her local
childrens centre, where she enrolled on a
beginners English course. She then
progressed to a functional skills class and
completed her English GCSE last year,
attaining a grade B, and is doing her maths

Anca says, I loved the GCSE; I enjoy
reading and it gave me an opportunity to
analyse texts and write creatively, which is
something I had never done before.
She has also completed childcare level 1,
which helped her to find work in a primary
school: The course was really useful, I
learnt a lot and the teacher was nice. Thanks
to the English I am much more confident

their literacy. I enjoy working with older
children who are starting to read different
texts and understand their meanings.

...in Horticulture

He was offered a place on the course, but

lacked confidence: I decided to wait until I
was more experienced in gardening before
taking it on, but then I spoke to someone
who had done the course and highly
recommended it and she boosted my
confidence. I changed my mind and enrolled
and I am so glad I did.
Owen says the classes have a personal,
open atmosphere: Theyre relaxed but we
fit a lot in! I am comfortable with the pace of
the course and its really useful to have such
a knowledgeable tutor.
Now he can name and recognise 100
different plants and, with the support of his
tutor, he has found work both as a selfemployed gardener and as a horticultural
therapist. I felt extremely pleased when I
received the news that I had got the job and
felt like all my hard work on the Level 2
course was starting to pay off.
I am really proud of what I have achieved
in the last six months. The course has
helped me advance very rapidly in my
career and I am looking forward to the next
stages of my journey.

Case study: Nadia

Since moving to the
UK six years ago,
Nadia has had a
strong interest in
gardening. I come
from Russia, where
its so cold things die in the winter, but
England stays beautiful all year. My
husband and I have two allotments and
we have always done our best with them,
but it was my mother in law who
suggested I do a horticulture course. She
brought me a brochure and I came to one
of your open days.
Since joining the course, Nadia has learnt
lots of practical skills she can use while
gardening. I know how to take cuttings,

collect and store seeds and take care of

the soil. Spring is my favourite time of year
and now I can plan my gardening properly
its exciting because I know what plants
need to thrive. My teacher is really great.
She makes it interesting. Even though its a
theory course, she brings things in and we
do a lot of practical work. She gave us a list
of things which we could do at the end of
the course.
Nadia now has a job in a garden nursery
and its her dream to become a
horticulturalist. Her advice to prospective
learners would be: Stop thinking about
doing it and come and enquire. Its a lot
harder than I expected but if you revise
and prepare nothing is impossible.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a

florist? In 2014, there were approximately
8,500 floristry businesses in the UK,
employing around 17,000 people. We offer
a wide range of courses that can
accommodate the learner just starting out
on this journey or those that have worked
in the industry for some time and wish to
upskill or gain a recognized qualification.
All our tutors are active within the
industry, which ensures all or our classes
are fresh and current.
Our Floristry Apprenticeships provide
learners with skills in specialist areas of
expertise while gaining knowledge of the
floristry profession. Our apprentices will be
employed on a full time basis, spending
four days within a suitable work placement
and one day at one of our centers. Please
contact Nicky for more information
ngrieve@hillingdon.gov.uk
Our Level 1 Modern Commercial Floristry
is a great first step into the world of
floristry. A practical, ten week course
introducing you to the basics of design and
colour. Perfect if you have not been in the
classroom for a while.
Our Level 2 Certificate or Diploma will
give you a much more comprehensive look
into the floristry world. These courses
cover a diverse selection of commercially
popular floral designs as well as contract
work and event decoration. We will help
you to secure a work placement while you
are with us, to enhance your learning and
give you some hands on experience.
Our Level 3 Diploma Package is suitable
for learners with extensive experience within
the industry or those who hold a level 2
qualification in floristry. This is an exciting
package of a Level 3 Diploma and a series of
one-day workshops to enrich your learning.

Case Study:
Kaytie
Having worked as a
nanny and as a
personal trainer,
Kaytie wanted to do
something different:
I knew that I wanted to be my own boss
and Ive always been creative, but it was my
mum who suggested floristry. I did a 10
week course called Flowers For Fun and
really enjoyed it.
Four and half years later, Kaytie has now
completed her Level 3 Diploma in
Floristry, has her own successful florist
shop and is a qualified floristry teacher.
She says of the course, I really enjoyed it.
It had a lot more theory than I imagined
but the teacher was the biggest
inspiration a learner could ask for. I learnt
so many skills and it was very industry
based. We were encouraged to have our
own distinctive flair.
In particular, Kaytie remembers entering
into the Covent Garden floristry
competition as part of the course: It was
an amazing experience for us all and a lot
of fun.

These are run at different times and on

different days of the week throughout the
borough. We will discuss the best option for
you when we meet you at enrolment.

When asked about the workload, she says,

Oh gosh, its huge! I was warned and I
still underestimated it, but it was worth it
in the end.

For more information on these options,

please turn to pages 20 to 25.

Her advice to other people would be Get

as much experience as you can and go to
events and demonstrations. It can only
serve to help and inspire you. Doing this
course is so important if you do want a
career in the floristry industry.

Case Study: Fozia

Fozia moved to the UK in 1997 and,
alongside being a mother, worked as a
bookkeeper. After caring for her father,
she realised she wanted to be a nurse and
with this is mind, she joined HACL last
year and enrolled on a level 2 Health and
Social Care course. She is now studying
Access to Higher Education, GCSE maths
and level 2 English.
Fozia says, I love the courses. Theyve given
me an insight into topics I didnt know about.
I was able to study maths and ICT alongside
my level 2, which improved my skills and
gave me much more confidence to support
my children with their school work. My
writing skills are much better now too.

Level 2 Award in Food Safety
Food safety and hygiene procedures are
extremely important in health and social care
settings as older people and those with
complex health needs tend to have weaker

related infections. The Care Quality
Commission requires that care services
ensure that the food and drink they provide is
handled, stored, prepared and delivered in a
way that meets the requirements of the Act.

boundaries and responsibilities in offering
information, advice and guidance and will
support learners to develop their
communication and interaction skills.
Learners will also gain knowledge of good
practice when signposting and referring,
including recording, monitoring and

client group.

Nikki is a busy
mum of three who
works as an
occupational
therapist at a local
school, volunteers
with Help the Aged and is studying for a
post graduate qualification in sensory
integration. Her journey began in 2010
when she joined HACLs Access to Higher
Education course.
When we got that first assignment and
had to write 1000 words I thought what
have I let myself in for? says Nikki, But
we had good support which prepared us
for what lay ahead.
Whilst studying on Access, Nikki applied
to university and at the end of the course
she and another learner embarked on a

degree in occupational therapy at Brunel.

As part of Access, she undertook
voluntary work with Help the Aged, which
she continues to this day.
Her advice to future students is, Access
is a stepping stone so use it because
theres so much out there you can do.
Doing a degree is life changing, so be
prepared to change. When youre finding it
tough just remember the days that youve
got through already and keep your focus
on the end goal.
Nikki never thought that she would go to
university but says, The Access course
empowers you, it gives you confidence and
I amazed myself. The degree was one of
the hardest things I have ever done, but
also the most rewarding.

Every child deserves the best possible start

in life and needs the support of well trained
and dedicated professionals to fulfil their
potential. Working with children and young
people can be exciting, challenging and
very rewarding. A career in this field can
offer flexibility around family life with
plenty of progression opportunities,
perhaps to full-time work, higher education
or even setting up your own business!
Once you have decided that you want to care
for children professionally, you need to
consider the various types of childcare
before choosing the career best suited to you
and the qualifications required for this role.
At Hillingdon Adult and Community
Learning, we can support you towards a
career as an Early Years practitioner in
nurseries or pre-schools, or a support role
in primary and secondary schools, including
learning support assistants, teaching
assistants or learning mentors. These are
some of the most common roles in
childcare settings, but have you thought
about more unique roles? After studying
with us, you could consider a career as an
au pair or outreach worker.
Whatever your choice, role or route you
might choose, you can be certain that no two
days will be the same. Each of our courses
are designed to provide you with the
knowledge, skills and competencies needed
to support children to explore, experience
and develop an understanding of the world
around them as they grow.

New for September

Level 2 Award in Food Safety
Food safety is essential in early years and
school settings because children are a
particularly vulnerable group who can be
seriously affected by food poisoning and
food allergies. It is an Ofsted requirement
that all staff involved in preparing and
handling food must receive training in
food hygiene.
Our brand new e-learning course will cover:
legal responsibilities
food safety procedures and risk
assessment
safe food handling
the importance of personal hygiene in
food safety

Case Study:
Sarah
Sarah joined HACL
in 2014, looking for
a new career. I
used be a sales
manager but left to
look after my children. I wanted a job
where I could put the skills Id gained as a
parent and carer into practice.

...in Childcare

...in Childcare

She enrolled on Level 1 Award in an

Introduction to Early Years Settings, which
she passed, and she is now studying for
Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young
Peoples Workforce.
Its a really enjoyable way of learning and
the courses have helped me to gain an
understanding of all aspects of working
with children.
As part of the course, Sarah has a
voluntary placement in a school: It helps
me to see all aspects of the job and I really
like it, especially working with children with
additional needs.
Sarah is also doing GCSE maths and
English. Doing the maths and the English
has given me so much confidence and its
important for a role in a school, its about
so much more than just getting the
qualifications.

If you prepare or handle small snacks, hot

or cold meals in your setting, this is the
course for you. The online teaching means
you can learn flexibly at your own pace and
at a time that suits you.

Sarah plans to look for employment in a

school next year and would like to qualify
as a primary school teacher eventually. I
would recommend HACL and these
courses to anyone.

Contact us for more details about training

for your own personal development, or for
further details of group discount for your
staff team.

The times are convenient and its a great

way for parents to gain qualifications,
retrain and get into work. You are given
great support to ensure you pick the course
thats right for you.

She says, The course is interesting and I have

through level 1 and I have a learning support
assistant in class because I am dyslexic. I get
extra time in exams, which is handy.

Would you like to learn new skills, maintain

your existing skills and meet new people in a
friendly environment? We have courses to
suit adults with a wide range of learning
difficulties and disabilities, with
personalised learning at its heart, and we
work at venues across the borough. Whether
you have profound or mild learning
difficulties, we have a course for you.

The curriculum we offer focuses on:

learning skills that support
independent living
developing skills for work
Our independent living skills courses
enable learners to manage independently at
home and within the community, building
their confidence along with skills. Creative
courses maintain concentration and fine
motor skills.
If youd like to gain skills for work we have a
wide range of courses including English,
maths and ICT. Our Vocational Foundation
Learning Programme (FLC) is a demanding
course that develops specific vocational skills.
We also offer a pathway in independent
living for those wishing to move into
supported accommodation and this year we
are extending this course to Year 2.
Work in Supported Employment (WISE) is a
community-based project that is run as part
of our FLC Programme. It enables adults
with learning difficulties/ disabilities to
access voluntary work-based learning and
work placements. Working in the
community is a vital part of social inclusion
and this programme aims to support
residents with LDD to do just that.
For information about all of your course choices
come and talk to us at our ALDD Open Day.

New for September

Annie and Susie are both learners on

HACLs Foundation Learning Curriculum
Independent Living Pathway for adults with
learning difficulties. Between them, they
have also studied catering, ICT, art and
cooking at HACL.

We will be running a drama course, ideally

suited for those learners who have attended
a dance or singing course but would like to
continue practicing performing arts whilst
building their confidence.

Annie says she likes the teachers because

they are nice and friendly, whereas Susies
favourite thing is working outside at the
Rural Activities Garden Centre because she
likes digging and the flowers.

Partner Comment

As a result of the courses, Annie says, I

have more focus skills and cook at home
now. Susie on the other hand has learnt to
type, wash clothes and look after the home.

Hillingdon Autistic Care and Support

(HACS) have been working in partnership
with HACL to deliver our Stepping Stones
to Employment project since 2014. The
project aims to break down the barriers
toward employment for adults with autism
and learning disabilities. The support
from HACL to develop this project has
been invaluable. Our partnership ensures
that we reach as many residents with
autism and learning disabilities as
possible and help them to prepare for
employment, so they may lead socially
inclusive, independent and fulfilling lives.

Volunteers we need you!

Do you have an interest in your community
and a few hours a week to spare? Or perhaps
you speak a second language and would like
to put your skills to good use? Volunteering
could be good for you and good for us!
We have a number or roles that may
interest you, from reading with families as a
Literacy Ambassador to supporting adults
and young people with their learning. We
also need volunteers on a range of our
programmes in Family Learning. If you are
considering volunteering as a pastime and
giving something back to your local
community, please email
hacl-info@hgfl.org.uk
to register your interest.

Learner volunteers
This year we will be piloting a learner
volunteer scheme. So, if you are a learner on
one of our courses, you have the opportunity
to contribute actively to the life of the service
by joining our volunteer network. This could
help you to gain confidence, improve your
communication skills and boost your CV
whilst you help someone else. Please email
ewingerath@hillingdon.gov.uk or contact
one of our centres for more information.

Alumni
If you have already completed your learning
with us, or are still with us but have
progressed to a higher programme of study,
you could help out by supporting new
learners. This might involve visiting classes
and speaking to students in order to inspire
and encourage them, or helping out at an
open day or a progression evening.

New for 2015/16

Learn to be Well
Ensuring a healthy state of wellbeing
should be at the top of everyones to-do
list. One in every four people will
experience a mental health problem at
some point in their lives and money
worries, work and relationship problems,
unemployment, illness and loneliness can
increase the risk of developing depression
and anxiety.
Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning is
working with partners to provide a wide
range of new courses that focus on selfhelp, confidence building, lifestyle and
enterprise or employability. In addition, they
offer an opportunity to meet new people,
learn new skills and develop new interests.
So if you are suffering from sleeplessness,
anxiety and/or depression we might be
able to support you; ask us about our
courses in relaxation, yoga, art therapy,
flower arranging, gardening and more.
For more information, contact:
01895 473 176
learntobewell@hgfl.org.uk
The support we provide is based on an
individuals needs, so all learners will be
expected to complete a short questionnaire
both before and after the course.

Art Projects
Our Centre Arts Project is a fantastic way to
meet new people, develop your skills and
contribute to the service. You could
contribute to the production of a large scale
piece of artwork, which will be displayed in
one of our centres for everyone to see.

Case study:
David
David has been
studying art with
HACL for five years
and has become
more and more
involved in community art.
Last year he held his first exhibition
where he sold seven paintings and he
won three awards in Stoke Poges
Horticultural Societys art competition.
He speaks highly of all the courses and
his classmates. We all have completely
different strengths.
When David was approached by
Hillingdon Hospital and asked if he
would do a mural for it, he agreed but
enlisted the whole class to contribute.
Its a 9ft x 6ft space and were doing it
in the style of Matisse.

Are you a carer in Hillingdon?

Developing your skills in the community

For more information please contact one of

our centres.

What the learners have to say:

The sessions were totally absorbing and
overall I found the course to be inspiring and
imaginative. It was beneficial to me because I
could forget about day to day chores and
stresses and do something creative.
It was lovely to get out for a couple of hours in
the evening. I never thought I would get to see
a ballet and was pleasantly surprised, as I
enjoyed it very much; I also got to see another
carer that I knew and have a chat. Enjoyed the
evening very much. Thank you.

Partner Comment
Hillingdon Carers is the lead provider of
support to unpaid carers in Hillingdon and
has been working in partnership with
Hillingdon Adult Learning Service for many
years to provide breaks for carers. Courses
give carers the opportunity to try
something different or to rediscover old
hobbies and skills that have been lost due
to the time restraints of providing
significant levels of care for their loved
ones. They can often start a new hobby or
simply display their art piece on the
mantelpiece with pride. This enables them
to gain confidence in themselves and what
they can achieve.
Elizabeth Harris
Hillingdon Carers

Good to have some me time, learning a new

creative skill, making some jewellery. Lovely
to focus on something away from the home,
bringing back something new to share and
talk about. Most enjoyable!
It gave me some time to myself and a much
needed break. The course was very therapeutic.

This course was a wonderful escape from the

stress and pressures of caring. It took me to
another place and it was wonderful! It has
also given me another skill that I can practice
in the few hours I get free!

Calling all Grandparents

Would you like to get involved with your
grandchildrens learning?
A childs relationship with his or her
grandparents can be one of the most
important of their lives. Grandparents
provide stability and support as their
grandchildren battle with growing up in a
very different community than they did.
Grandparents pass on the knowledge of
older traditions to a new generation and
help play a part in a childs understanding
of who they are and where they come from.
The role that grandparents play in family
life is set to grow as our population ages
and they are around for longer.
Opportunities for learning together and
supporting your grandchildren are offered
to residents within schools and some of our
centres. Contact us for more information
about intergenerational learning and how to
get involved.

Whether you want to discover your hidden

artist, improve your language skills for the
summer holidays, make your own clothes or
have a go at singing, we have the course for you.

Case study: Kirsty

Kirsty started sewing about three years
ago. I was inspired by The Great British
Sewing Bee. I wanted to buy my own
sewing machine but didnt have the
funds. Then I accidentally put a small
bet on an outsider at the Grand
National. It won and I was able to buy
my first sewing machine!
After doing some beginners classes,
Kirsty decided she wanted to do an
accredited course, so in September 2014
she enrolled on City and Guilds Level 2 in
Fashion and Sewing. HACL offers evening
classes, which means I can come to class
while my husband is home with the
children and the price of the course is
very good.

If youve been inspired by the Great British

Sewing Bee, want to try your hand at
making your own curtains or would like to
learn how to knit for new arrivals, we have
a range of sewing and fashion classes at
different levels throughout the year. City
and Guilds courses in this area provide
opportunities to develop your skills,
advance your career or set up a business.

Language barrier?
Equipping yourself with a second language
could make summer holidays even better,
business trips run more smoothly and look
impressive on a CV. We have classes in
French, Spanish, British Sign Language,
Mandarin and more so join a class now.

Centre Arts
We offer free short courses which give you
the opportunity to discover and/or develop
your creative potential. Our experienced
tutors/artists will inspire you to create
artworks for display across the borough.
Art material will be provided free of charge.
Please note: one course per learner subject
to enrolments. Email hacl-info@hgfl.org.uk
to register your interest.

Are you over 60?

We have a programme of art, ICT, health
and leisure classes especially designed
for you. Please see our over 60s section of
this brochure.

Kirsty has enjoyed learning to make

clothes to a professional, saleable
standard and has also learnt a number of
things which she didnt expect. We were
taught how to dye fabric and made 3D
models of our own bodies using duct tape
and cling film! She has also benefited
from the teachers knowledge and
experience. She is very helpful and its
nice to learn about how she progressed
from the same course onto university and
working in the industry. Kirsty admits the
course is a lot of hard work. The class
has a relaxed atmosphere, but we get a lot
done and you have to do a lot of work
outside the class.

Develop your skills for a better work/life balance

Develop your skills for a better work/life balance

In the future, Kirsty would like to start her

own business in making and selling
clothes, possibly evening or bridal wear.

Have you ever looked at a painting in a

gallery and thought, I wonder if I could do
that? Or perhaps youd like to make
handmade gifts for people or add a personal
touch to your home? We have a wide variety
of creative skills courses at a range of levels.
Have a look at our course lists and get in
touch with your creative side.

Case study:
Chico
After a career in
graphic design,
Chico came to HACL
ten years ago to
enroll on an art
class. Id been involved in arts and the
creative industry my whole life but Id never
done any drawing and painting.
She started with a life drawing class, then did
a series of watercolour classes. I learnt so
much technique that I didnt know before. I
could always draw but I didnt have the
confidence to put watercolour down because I
didnt know what it would do! However,
thanks to her teacher, Chicos confidence
grew. She is a lovely person and a brilliant
teacher. Whats more, now she is getting
commissions for her work, has been displayed
in the local library and sold some paintings.

Most of our courses do not require an interview. We offer a range of courses at all levels
and our tutors make every effort to accommodate your individual needs. Before choosing
your course please read the full course information sheet carefully and bear in mind the
following to help you decide which is the most appropriate level of course for you.
Beginners

If the subject is new to you, or you have limited experience of the subject.

Intermediate

Chico no longer worries about

experimenting on the canvas. A lot of my
work is play now. My teacher is in favour of
happy accidents and its tremendous fun
and even better when I sell something!

If you have some prior experience of the subject, but do not yet consider
yourself to be at an advanced level. At this level you will be building on your
existing skills and increase your confidence.

Advanced

If you have completed a significant amount of learning in this subject already

and wish to further your skills. You are able to work with some
independence and confidence within the subject.

If I had to give advice to someone

considering a course at HACL, I would say,
absolutely do it, dont think about it! We are
so lucky in Hillingdon to have such a wide
adult education provision, so if youve ever
fancied trying something, just go for it its
first rate.

Mixed levels

For people at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels with appropriate

support given to your level. Please be aware that the class will be made up
of learners with different levels of experience.

Qualification
Courses

If you wish to study a creative art subject, develop your career, develop
studio-based activities or set-up your own small business. You will complete
a portfolio of work which demonstrates your creative abilities.
You will need to have an interview and a pre-course assessment before
joining the course.

The year 2001 was declared the European

Year of Languages by the Council of Europe,
the European Union, and UNESCO. In
announcing the initiative, the three bodies
argued for the importance of language
learning for personal development and
suggested that lingual competencies are
needed to respond to economic, social, and
cultural changes in society (en.wikipedia.org).
Its never too late to learn a new
language, so why not start now?
There are all sorts of reasons to study
another language. Perhaps you would like to:
learn about new cultures
learn songs, read books, watch movies
in other languages
communicate better when you travel abroad
keep a healthy mind
challenge yourself
get a promotion at work
do it because it is fun

Modern foreign languages

In keeping with the aims of the National
Languages Strategy, our Modern Foreign
Language provision is mapped to The Language
Ladder. The Language Ladder has been
designed to endorse achievement in language
skills at all levels of competence, for all ages
in a wide range of languages. The Ladder
assesses competence and maps progress in the
skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We have given some initial information
about levels overleaf but to ensure that you
are working at the appropriate level to
develop your language skills, come along to
one of our open days.
If you miss the September start and you
are a complete beginner, we have intensive
courses starting in January 2016 in
Spanish and French only. See module A
plus in this brochure.

Case study:
Jonathan
Jonathan has been
studying Spanish
with Hillingdon
Adult Education for
a number of years.
I always studied as part of a group of
learners at the adult education centres. In
that time I achieved a GCSE in Spanish.
He works full time as a nurse and after a
promotion last year it became increasingly
difficult to attend classes. I enrolled in
the VLE programme to learn online and I
am now able to continue my learning and
schedule my Skype classes around my
working week.

...in Modern Foreign Languages

...in Modern Foreign Languages

For Jonathan, courses have been hugely

beneficial. I feel that the one to one nature
of the VLE course has had a really positive
impact on my ability to communicate in
Spanish. In the last year I have reached a
good level of fluency and confidence when
talking and listening in Spanish.
In the future, Jonathan plans to relocate to
Spain. He says, The VLE course is a
fantastic way for me to prepare myself for
life on the Costa Blanca!

NEW Chinese Mandarin

Chinese Mandarin is the most spoken
language in the world with over 1.2 billion
people. You may want to learn because of
the culture, for business or for holiday in
China. Our Chinese Mandarin for beginners

Community Interpreting courses

Ever thought of using your language skills
and offer interpreting for other people in
your community? This course could be the
start of a new career. It is for people who
already speak a foreign language and have
English as their second language. As a
qualified community interpreter you may
provide equality of opportunity in your
community and help ethnic minority people
get access to public services. Courses will
start from September 2015.

Come along to learn, discover, explore,

enjoy and progress in a family-based
learning experience. Hillingdon Adult and
Community Learning recognises the
importance of children and their parents/
carers learning together. We offer a Family
Learning provision to support the needs of
your familys learning.
All our courses are designed and delivered
to encourage children, parents, carers,
grandparents and extended family
members to learn new skills together and
to show all generations how learning
together can be fun and beneficial. Our
courses offer a range, from
intergenerational (with the children) to
adult only sessions. You can develop your
own skills, as well as support your
childrens learning, in a fun and relaxed
environment. All the courses are free and
run by qualified tutors within local schools,
childrens centres and community settings
across the London Borough of Hillingdon.

Experience the positive impact

our Family Learning provision
can have on your familys life.
We provide two types of Family Learning
Courses:
Family English, Maths and Language
courses aimed at equipping you with the
skills to support your children through
their early years and onto the schools
literacy and numeracy curriculums, as
well as developing your own skills. Our
current courses cover English, maths,
ESOL, Early Years Foundation Stage, ICT
and employability. You can progress onto
a course to achieve a qualification in
English, ESOL or numeracy. These
courses are all free and the eligibility
criteria are overleaf. All the courses are
run by qualified tutors within local

schools, childrens centres and

community settings across the London

your community setting, school or

interested in any of these courses.
Wider Family Learning workshops,
events and courses are run in
partnership with local organisations,
community settings, schools and
children centres; they are designed for
dads, mums, grandparents, carers and
children and they are aimed at:
developing the skills and knowledge of
both adults and children participating;
encourage parents/carers to be more
active in supporting their childs learning
and development; for parents/carers to
understand the impact of their support,
thereby enhancing their childs
opportunities to enjoy and be successful
in their future learning. We offer a variety
of activities across many areas; here is
just a sample of our courses:
Arts and culture
Design & Make a Cushion, Potty About
Pottery, Spanish Por Favor
Health and wellbeing
Grow in a Bag, Just Jhoom
Topical and seasonal activities
Seasonal arts and crafts, Halloween
Hocus Pocus, Diwali Divas, Festival of
Colour and many more.

Case study:
Lucy
After leaving school
at a young age, Lucy
enrolled on Keeping
Up With the Children
courses in literacy
and numeracy at Harefield Childrens Centre.
She then did a Level 1 Supporting Teaching
and Learning Qualification, which enabled
her to find a job in a school last December.
She is now studying for her Level 2, alongside
GCSE English.
Lucy is really enjoying her courses: I like
writing and through all the feedback that I
get, I know Im improving. Now I want to read
more books and I think more deeply about
things. Not only that, it has also helped Lucy
to help her friends and family: Doing these
courses has enabled me to support my kids
and sisters with their schoolwork and now
Im pushing my friends to do courses.

Develop your skills with your family

Develop your skills with your family

The courses I have done at Hillingdon have

made me into the person I am today and
given me a career, says Lucy. They have
made me into a more positive person
because now there is something to look
forward to. Ive met and embraced so many
people along the way. Its broadened my
horizons and Im more than just a mum.
Lucy wants to continue studying and go to
university in the future to become a teacher.

All the courses are run by qualified tutors

within local schools, childrens centres
and community settings across the
London Borough of Hillingdon. These
courses are free and the term family
includes all members of the extended
family including parents, carers,
grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles.

The cost of your course

Hillingdon Adult and
Community Learning
funding of courses

Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning

(through contract by the local authority) is
funded by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA)
and the local authority (LA) to deliver learning
opportunities. In accordance with funding
regulations, learners are expected to pay
tuition fees in line with SFA and LA assumed
fee income, which is calculated as an hourly
rate. Hillingdon Adult and Community
Learning also gives a range of concessions.
In order for learners to benefit from SFA and LA
funding (i.e. pay the course costs set out in this
brochure) they must comply with all SFA and LA
documentary evidence requirements (such as
date of birth, qualifications). Furthermore,
during their chosen course of study, learners
are expected to complete necessary
paperwork (such as individual learning plans
and evaluations). Any learner refusing to
comply with these requirements will be charged
at the full cost recovery rate for their course.
Learners on accredited courses will be allocated
a Unique Learner Number (ULN) which needs
to be kept in safe keeping as this is a lifelong
reference for recording all qualifications.

To help you pay for

your learning
Paying in instalments
Where a course is of at least 4 months
duration, fees are higher than 100, and are
not sponsored by a third party; these can be
paid for by instalments, through
arrangement at the time of enrolment.
The learner will need to pay 50% of the course
fee at enrolment, the remaining 50% will be
collected through a direct debit mandate which
will be actioned at the point of enrolment. The
76

Adult and Community Learning Courses 2015/16

first instalment will be due on the 24th day of

the month following the start of the course.
The full procedure is available on request.

Refunds Policy
Learners should bear in mind before they
pay (or authorise credit/debit card payment)
that fee payments are non-returnable
except in the following circumstances:
1. The course is cancelled by Hillingdon Adult
and Community Learning before start date
at the first session, in which case paid
course fee will be refunded in full.
2. The course commences but closes
within 5 weeks of the start date, due to
unforeseen circumstances:
a. Full refund of fees for courses
leading to a qualification.
b. Pro-rata (partial) refund for courses
not leading to a qualification depending
on the number of weeks attended.
Please note: refunds will only be payable to
learners still attending the class when the
decision to close is made.
3. Learners requesting a refund due to health
reasons must apply in writing, attaching a
medical certificate, to the centre where the
course is held. This needs to be within
30 days from the last session attended.
Please note:
Only the tuition fee element of the course
will be refunded.
Exam costs are non-refundable.
Refunds are calculated on a pro-rata basis
from the date of the refund application.
An administrative fee of 10 will be
charged for processing the refund.
Refunds are not given for courses
lasting less than 5 weeks.
If a learner is not entitled to a refund under the
Policy, a credit note may be issued which can
be used as payment towards any other HACL
course starting within a 12 month period.

Please contact the relevant centre for your chosen course or enrol online at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/adultlearning

Relevant documentary proof of entitlement, in
line with funding policy, must be available for
inspection at enrolment. Where prior
qualification certification cannot be evidenced, a
qualification declaration will need to be signed
in order for fee remission to be activated.

your own or fellow learners learning will not be
tolerated and will be addressed immediately. If
this behaviour continues and in the opinion of
