CIK-FIA Championships, Cups and Trophies

MANY INNOVATIONS AT THE CIK-FIA

The first round of the European Championships of the KZ1 and KZ2 categories at Sarno-Napoli (ITA) on
10 and 11 April 2010 was the opportunity for the CIK-FIA to implement some innovations aimed at rein-
forcing the services offered to participants and spectators.

Already a pioneer in the Karting field with the live transmission of results on its website www.cikfia.com
(2005) and with the splitting of tracks into three timed sections (for a sharp study of partial lap-times),
the CIK-FIA launched in Sarno a new mode of issuing of classifications, with the installation of its own wifi
system allowing to send the results for the attention of Teams, Mechanics, accompaniers and spectators
on their own portable computers or on their smartphones. This is a fine way of having live reading of the
performances and classifications of Drivers from the paddock or the grandstands. The system is called
CIKLIVE HOTSPOT. It complements another service developed last year which is ensured by a terminal
with a touch-sensitive display capable of printing on paper and on request the results of all practice ses-
sions, heats and races of the competition weekend.

Another novelty was introduced at these European Championships held at Sarno. A new software, connec-
ted to a very high-definition camera, reinforces the traditional timekeeping system. This system, develo-
ped by the Vola company, provides an exceptional precision (non-stop recording of 7,000 to 14,000 lines
per second!); it also acts as a photo finish and as a back-up for timekeeping. If the timekeeping is faulty,
the system can reconstitute the full race thanks to a photographic recording of the finish line crossing of
all the karts. It also allows the follow-up of a kart which may have inopportunely taken the start of the
race without its transponder or may have lost it during the event.

Finally, further to the very positive experimentation conducted at three events in 2009, the CIK-FIA has
generalised the use of on-board cameras on the karts, with the goal of controlling the Drivers’ track beha-
viour; it is also aimed at education and communication. The miniature Go-Pro cameras used this year are
of the HD type and offer a very sharp quality of pictures.

BEAUCOUP D’INNOVATIONS À LA CIK-FIA

La première épreuve des Championnats d’Europe des catégories KZ1 et KZ2 à Sarno-Napoli les 10 et 11
avril dernier a été l’occasion pour la CIK-FIA de mettre en place quelques innovations visant à renforcer
les services rendus aux participants et aux spectateurs.

Déjà pionnière en Karting avec la transmission en direct des résultats sur son site Internet www.cikfia.com
(2005) et avec le découpage en trois secteurs chronométrés des pistes (pour une analyse fine des chro-
nos partiels), la CIK-FIA a lancé à Sarno un nouveau mode de diffusion des classements, avec l’installa-
tion de son propre site web local permettant l’envoi en temps réel des résultats à l’attention des Équipes,
Mécaniciens, accompagnants et spectateurs sur leurs ordinateurs portables ou sur leurs smartphones. Une
belle façon de lire en direct les performances et classements des Pilotes depuis le paddock ou les tribunes.
Ce réseau wifi est baptisé CIKLIVE HOTSPOT. Il complète un autre service développé l’an dernier, assuré
par une borne à écran tactile capable d’imprimer sur papier et à la demande les classements de toutes les
séances d’essais, manches et courses du week-end de compétition.

Une autre nouveauté a été inaugurée lors de ces Championnats d’Europe courus à Sarno. Un nouveau
logiciel, connecté à une caméra très haute définition, renforce le système traditionnel de chronométrage.
Ce système, développé par la société Vola, offre une précision exceptionnelle (enregistrement de 7.000 à
14.000 lignes à la seconde en continu !), faisant office de photo-finish, mais aussi de doublage du chrono-
métrage. En cas de défaillance du chronométrage, le système peut reconstituer l’intégralité de la course,
par un enregistrement photographique du passage de tous les karts sur la ligne d’arrivée. Il permet aussi
d’assurer le suivi d’un kart qui aurait malencontreusement pris le départ de la course sans transpondeur
ou l’aurait perdu en cours d’épreuve.

Enfin, suite à l’expérimentation très positive menée sur trois épreuves en 2009, la CIK-FIA a généralisé
l’usage des caméras embarquées sur les karts, à des fins de contrôle du comportement des Pilotes en
piste, mais aussi d’éducation et de communication. Les caméras miniatures Go-Pro utilisées cette année
sont de type HD et offrent une qualité très fine d’images.
