Problem Set 1 (Chapters 1-5)

First Long Exam Coverage
Due: February 29, 2015

Submission Guidelines
Answer the following questions in clean sheets of yellow paper.
Show your complete solution and box the final answer.
Solutions to a maximum of two items are to be written per phase of a yellow paper.
You may write at the back of the yellow paper.
Do not forget to include the following information in every sheet of paper that you will use:
1. Name
2. Student Number
3. Section
4. Class Number
You may submit your work until 5pm of February 29.
Chapter 1 Units, Physical Quantities and Vectors
1. In at most two sentences, write what you have learned in Chapter 1: Units, Physical Quantities and Vectors.
2. In the following equations, the distance x is in meters, the time t is in seconds, and the velocity v is in
meters per second. What are the SI units of the constant C1 and C2 ?
(a) x = 21 C1 t2
(b) v 2 = 2C1 x
(c) v = C1 eC2 t
3. The helicopter view in the figure shows two people pulling on a stubborn mule. Find:
(a) the single force that is equivalent to the two forces shown.
(b) the force that a third person would have to exert on the mule to make the resultant force equal to zero.

The forces are measured in units of newtons (N).

4. A ferryboat transports tourists among three islands. It starts from the first island to the second island, 4.76
km away, in a direction 37.0 north of east. It then sails from the second island to the third island in a
direction 69.0 west of north. Finally, it returns to the first island, sailing in a direction 28.0 east of south.
Calculate the distance between
(a) the second and the third islands
(b) the first and third islands

Chapter 2 Motion Along A Straight Line

1. In at most two sentences, write what you have learned in Chapter 2: Motion Along A Straight Line.
2. A flowerpot falls from the ledge of a apartment building. A person in an apartment below, coincidentally
holding a stopwatch, notices that it takes 0.2 s for the pot to fall past his window, which is 4 m high. How
far above the top of the window is the ledge from which the pot fell?
3. At t = 0,a stone is dropped from a cliff above a lake; 1.6 s later another stone is thrown downward with an
initial speed of 32 m/s. Both stones hit the water at the same time. Find the height of the cliff.
4. A plane landing on an aircraft carrier has just 70 m to stop. If its initial speed is 60 m/s,
(a) what is the acceleration of the plane during landing, assuming it to be constant?
(b) How long does it take for the plane to stop?
Chapter 3 Motion in Two or Three Dimensions
1. In at most two sentences, write what you have learned in Chapter 3: Motion in Two or Three Dimension.
2. A projectile is fired at an initial speed of 53 m/s. Find the angle of projection such that the maximum
height of the projectile is equal to its horizontal range.
3. The earth has a radius of 6380 km and turns around once on its axis in 24 h.
(a) What is the radial acceleration, in m/s2 , of an object at the earths equator?
(b) If arad at the equator is greater than g, objects will fly off the earths surface and into space. What
would the period of the earths rotation have to be for this to occur?
4. A moving sidewalk in an airport terminal building moves at 1.00 m/s and is 35.0 m long. If a woman steps
on at one end and walks at 1.5 m/s relative to the moving sidewalk, how much time does she require to
reach the opposite end if she walks
(a) in the same direction the sidewalk is moving?
(b) in the opposite direction?
Chapter 4 Newtons Laws of Motion
1. In at most two sentences, write what you have learned in Chapter 4: Newtons Laws of Motion.
2. Two dogs pull horizontally on ropes attached to a post; the angle between the ropes is 60.0 . If dog A exerts
a force of 270. N and dog B exerts a force of 300. N, find the magnitude of the resultant force and the angle
it makes with dog As rope.
3. Block A is held by a stretched cable that runs parallel to the inclined plane. Block B is placed on the inclined
plane such that it is beneath Block A. The surface of the inclined plane is frictionless but there is friction
force between blocks A and B. Block B is about to slide don along the incline. Draw the free body diagram
of block A and block B.

4. A boy is holding a bird in his hand.

(a) What is the reaction force to the force exerted on the bird by the boys hand?
(b) What is the reaction force to the weight of the bird?

Chapter 5 Application of Newtons Laws of Motion

1. In at most two sentences, write what you have learned in Chapter 5: Application of Newtons Laws.
2. A 3-kg box resting on a horizontal shelf is attached to a 2-kg box by a light string as in the figure.

(a) What is the minimum coefficient of static friction such that the objects remain at rest?
(b) If the coefficient of static friction is less than that found in (a)and
the coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the shelf is 0.3,
find the time for the 2-kg box to fall 2 m to the floor if the system
starts from rest.

3. A block is placed against a vertical front of a cart as shown in the figure. What acceleration must the cart
have so that block A does not fall? The coefficient of static friction between the block and the cart is s .

4. A 750-g car travels 90.0 km/h around a curve with a radius of 160.-m. What should the banking angle of
the curve be so that the only force between the pavement and tires of the car is the normal reaction force?
