Concept Statement
The Donahue home will be a peaceful and relaxing
space. The main living space will include some divisions
to keep distractions to a minimum but still allow for a
clean line of sight. Soft and muted colors, furniture with
simple, curved lines and patterns with simple organic
floral motifs will be used throughout the house to create a
calming space for William in the Art Nouveau style Jenny
loves
Fig 1
Color Palette
This image was chosen as I thought it might represent a scene Jenny would see on
one of her runs down by the river. In color number 1 I added some white to create a
lighter green. In color 2, the hue was increased and the saturation was decreased to
create a warm light brown. In number 3, the hue was decreased, the saturation
increased and white was added to create a pink tone. Number 5 received a
decrease in white and a decrease in saturation to create a warmer, medium gray
tone. This is a split-complimentary color palette, due to the greens and pinks being
opposite each other on the color wheel and the brown tones, located in the orange
5
range being next to the pink tones.

Select a topic from the ones listed above and discuss why you feel
the surrounding factors demanded code compliance.
Fire and life safety codes are set in place to protect all occupants of a
residence. Fires obviously can be very dangerous, but having fire
alerting systems and fire barriers installed can minimize the effects of a
fire. Having codes for these items make sure they are installed properly
and functioning at their best ability. Installing a fire alerting system can
be relatively easy and inexpensive in the grand scheme of things. Codes
for fire barriers will help decrease the speed with which a fire spreads.
This is needed in conjunction with a fire altering system. A code
compliant fire barrier will allow occupants time to escape once they are
alerted about a fire. Slower burning materials in these fire barriers will
hopefully allow the occupants to escape with less hazardous effects
(Codes and Standards). Having these fire codes in place helps to keep
houses therefore the city safe and in turn a desired place to live. When
you know any residence you enter has to be up to fire code it just makes
you feel safer.
I feel these codes are absolutely necessary. When looking at the
construction of a whole house these codes are really minimal jobs that
can make a great deal of difference in the safety of a resident. My
question would be, why wouldnt you do it? If a life can be saved, with
relatively little work and minimal money, then fire codes seem like an
absolute necessity.
"Codes & Standards." Codes and Standards. Web. 21 Feb. 2016. http://www.nfpa.org/codes-andstandards
45
Building
Elements and
Materials
Since this is an existing building, the fire escapes should be evaluated on the viability of the structure and
then determine if they are up to current standards. The generalization of existing structures should need
evaluation before adhering to 405.1.2.
This existing structure should conform to this code because of the alerting system that a smoke alarm will
provide. All sleeping units need this type of device to protect the occupants from the potential catastrophe
that may occur with a fire.
The existing structure should conform to this code to keep all inhabitants safe. If a material has
been deemed hazardous by today's codes and standards, then it needs to be removed. A prime
example of this is absestos. If it is found in any building today, it is removed due to its hazardous
nature.
Electrical
Group faults are a key element in any structure. The GFCI is designed to protect people from severe or fatal
electric shocks. Because a GFCI detects ground faults, it can also prevent some electrical fires and reduce the
severity of others by interrupting the flow of electric current.
46
Energy
Conservation
Illuminating these areas will prevent potential trip hazards that might occur. Proper lighting throughout a
structure is important to the functionality and compliance standards.

Model Analysis
The study model shows an accurate rendition of the Donahues office. The
French doors on the North wall will allow light from all of the windows into the
living area, The furniture placement works nicely with the space and will allow
for easy movement around all the pieces.
Adding artwork to all the empty walls will help add symmetry to all of the
windows on the South wall.
The furniture pieces chosen seem to be a good fit and have good scale for
this space. They fill up the space while still allowing mobility around them.
It is nice to see the furniture at its scale to see how it will look and function in
the space.
The dominant form in this space is a rectangular form. The shape of the
windows and the desk have this form. The subdominant form would be
circular with the table and the rounded corners of the chairs.

Justification of Solution
The design concept for this project took into account the clients
preferred design style of Art Nouveau, the function of the spaces
and the fact that her son has autism. The goals of this project were to
create a relaxing space for Jenny and her son, William. There needed
to be a space for Jenny to work on her hobby of scrapbooking. She
also wanted a place to display all of her medals from running races.
The final outcome of this project addresses all of these goals. Muted
colors were chosen for the walls to not be overpowering for William
and these also stayed within the art nouveau design style. The fabrics
chosen did not have loud and distracting patterns on them. Any
patterned fabric kept to a botanical, foliage or organic theme. A
roomy living space with ample seating and a rocking chair for William
was created, along with a more feminine, relaxing master bedroom
for Jenny. An office area was also created for Jenny to work on her
scrapbooks.
Reflection
There were many aspects of design that I learned in this class but I
think the most important thing I learned was how to research and find
information on items I didnt know a lot about. I think the ability to
identify different architecture styles and how their style can impact
the interior style of a space is an important aspect of interior design.
Having to research and learn about different human factors is very
important as well. There are many things in design that can help or
worsen a certain situation. As designers, we need to be considerate
of these factors when design spaces. For example, my client had a
son with autism. It was important for me to research design and
autism. One thing I learned was that cork flooring has the ability to
absorb sounds and is a good choice for someone with autism.
Normally I would have probably chosen a hard wood floor for a
space like this, but a simple change to cork flooring will have a
positive impact on my client and didnt change the design style of
the house.
Reflection-contd
Learning about my clients preferred design style and keeping it
in mind was another important aspect learned. My clients style
was art nouveau. While I was not familiar with this style and it is
not my style I had to design a space in this style to satisfy my
clients requests.
