Based on IP technologies, which is one of the most flexible and efficient methods for
delivering content today, our CDMA2000 1X solution can greatly reduce your CapEx and OpEx.
For example, by incorporating IP transport within the network, you gain the ability to
right-size your network to meet your specific traffic demands, a factor that can minimise
your capital expenditures. Several more technical advantages of our CDMA2000 1X solution
help generate total cost savings:
The introduction of the Selection Distribution Unit (SDU) into our CDMA2000 1X network
is a key enabler in the migration to a fully IP, peer-to-peer, high-capacity, highly available
Radio Access Network (RAN). The SDU generates significant capacity gains within the
RAN, effectively reducing your cost of ownership. Additionally, the SDU provides significant
value by reducing network complexity, improving operability, improving network availability
and establishing a platform for future enhanced services.
Because our BTS solutions support both IS-95A/B and CDMA2000 1X standards, you
gain the flexibility to support both subscriber types with the same hardware. If youre
an existing Motorola operator, you can upgrade your SC 4812 BTS series to support
CDMA2000 1X with simple, cost-effective board and software upgrades, resulting in a
faster time-to-market and reduced cost of ownership. Lower ownership costs are also
achieved through an efficient transport network that reduces your BTS backhaulrelated expenses.
The cost of ownership advantages extend to the Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN),
which provides the interface between the IP-RAN and the data network. Scaling, one of
the key features of the PDSN, provides you with the flexibility to configure the size of
the data network to fit the initial data offering and grow the network by adding PDSNs
to a cluster of n+1 PDSNs for redundancy.

Part of reducing your operational expense includes making it easier for you to operate
your 1X network. Our open network management system includes a suite of products which,
when used together, provides an effective solution for planning, operating and optimising a
converged network of voice and data. Through intuitive graphical user interfaces, youre
able to monitor fault, state and configuration events and information on each of the RAN
components. Our integration of radio and IP as well as 2G and 1X components into a common
set of management tools has obvious advantages to both your CapEx and OpEx.
The operability advantages extend to these other aspects of our CDMA2000 1X solution:
IP-based platforms such as the SDU, combined with the IP transport network, allow
resources to be shared across multiple BSCs. This reduces or eliminates the need for
managing complex interconnections and handoff functions between BSCs, greatly
reducing network complexity and improving overall system operability.
The distributed nature of the architecture eliminates hierarchical dependencies between
network elements, reducing potential bottlenecks within the network. Operational activities
aimed at managing these bottlenecks, such as BTS reparenting, can be eliminated.
Remote channel activation allows you the ability to upgrade the channel capacity at
the BTS remotely through software activation. This eliminates the manpower costs of
visiting the BTS for channel expansions.
PROVIDING EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY OF SERVICE
Its fundamental: To keep your customers satisfied, you must ensure that they are able to
make and receive high-quality calls every time, at any time. Our CDMA2000 1X solutions
have been designed to provide the top-flight quality of service your customers demand.
Our networks are performance leaders in measured statistical categories such as fewest
dropped calls and call success rates. And our latest platforms further improve quality of
service by providing IP-based platforms such as the SDU that can support upgrades without
interrupting service to the end user, to improve overall network availability.
In addition, the IP nature of the RAN allows us to connect multiple regions together into a
single Soft Handoff zone, virtually eliminating the need for lower-quality Hard Handoffs.
Plus, support for Mobile IP provides access to a carriers entire network, enabling wireless
users to access Web and data services without interruption while moving between networks.
And because the IP transport network supports industry standard quality of service
techniques, you gain another means to protect voice traffic and maintain overall quality.
