COURSE BACKGROUND
Petroleum system is a natural system consists of geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal, and overburden
rocks) and processes (trap formation, hydrocarbon generation-migration-accumulation, preservation) need
to exist and relate to each other in space and time for petroleum accumulation to exist. Today, people use
concepts and methods of petroleum system in evaluating petroleum potential and risks in area of
investigation. Application of good petroleum system analyses have contributed to discoveries of new
petroleum accumulations and prevention of drilling dry exploration wells.
The course emphasizes the integration of geological, geophysical and geochemical (3-G) information to
analyze each element and process of petroleum system. Geological information deal with evaluation of basin
formation and evolution; sedimentation of stratigraphic sequences composing elements of sources,
reservoirs, carrier beds, seals and overburden rocks; and deformation concerning with processes of
petroleum system. Geophysical information assist analyses such as: distribution and characteristics of
petroleum system rock elements, formation and evolution of traps, and direction of petroleum migration.
Geochemical information help analyses such as: oil and gas grouping, their sources and maturation
histories, time of generation and migration and preservation of accumulation.
Petroleum generation, migration, accumulation and preservation are complicated historical proccesses. The
approach to analyze these proccesses can not be static (one-time only), but should be dynamic (multi-time,
evolution-concern, from time of formation to present) and involve many aspects related to geology,
geophysics and geochemistry (3-G). That is why this course is based on 3-G and dynamic approaches to
analyze elements and processes of petroleum system.
Participants will learn the essential concepts and methods of analyzing elements and processes of petroleum
system required to make and preserve oil and gas accumulations, and how to present this information well
to quickly communicate where best to explore for undiscovered accumulations. The participants will learn
methods to map geographic, stratigraphic and temporal extents of petroleum system, to prepare petroleum
system maps and cross sections, to define the critical moment with burial history modeling, and to make
petroleum system events charts. Case studies of various petroleum systems in different tectonic settings in
Indonesia areas will be discussed to know how tectonics affect petroleum system and hence knowledge of
regional geology of the area is important. The course is also offered as a workshop for discussing real cases
from areas where participants work in.
After attending the course, the participants can analyze well each element and process of petroleum system
in their working areas using concepts and methods discussed in the class. They will improve the evaluation
on risk assessment of basins, plays and prospects to know earlier the possibility of basins/areas/structures
with either active petroleum system or absence of petroleum system. The course will benefit both junior and
senior exploration professionals.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND ?

Geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, petroleum engineers, managers will get benefit participating this
course. The course is designed to be user-friendly, meet all levels of expertise, from basic to advanced.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Awang Harun Satyana is a Special Staff to Chairman of SKK Migas (Government
of Indonesia Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business). He
graduated from the Geology Department of the University of Padjadjaran,
Bandung in 1989. He worked for PERTAMINA from 1990-2002 assigning various
positions as Exploration Geologist and Regional Geologist. In 2002, Awang
joined BPMIGAS and since then has assigned various technical and managerial
positions, since November 2012 BPMIGAS was continued by SKK Migas.
Awang has actively serviced international and national geological societies by
contributing papers, articles, keynote talks, guest lectures and courses. There
have been totally 368 publications he made (93 full papers for conferences, 45
articles for journals, 30 book chapters, field trip books/notes, 104 invited
presentations and/or keynotes, 54 guest lectures, 42 course manuals). Several of
his papers got awards as the best papers and presentations. As appreciation for his great contribution and
dedication to geosciences, Lasut Award from IAGI and "HAGI Award" from HAGI were awarded to Awang
in 2002 and 2008, respectively.
Awang is so far the only Indonesian geologist assigned by the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum
Geologists) to be the Associate Editor for the AAPG Bulletin (during 2006-2007). Awang is a member of IAGI
(Indonesian Association of Geologists), IPA (Indonesian Petroleum Association), AAPG (American Association
of Petroleum Geologists), HAGI (Indonesian Association of Geophysicists), and IATMI (Indonesian Society of
Petroleum Engineers).

Awang has taught professional courses on various subjects for the last thirteen years, including: petroleum
geology of Indonesia, petroleum geochemistry, petroleum system analysis, and tectonics and structure.
Strong knowledge on many subjects and wide experience on many basins in Indonesia will provide him a
good command of teaching this course. Filled questionaires from this previous course participants rated the
course as generally excellent.
