1. If the probability that a male birth will occur is 0.51, what is the probability that a five-child family
will have all boys? Exactly four boys? Exactly two boys? Exactly one boy? All girls? 10pts
2. Three friends (A, B, and C) will participate in a round-robin tournament in which each one plays
both of the others. Suppose that P(A beats B)=0.7, P(B beats C)= 0.8 and P(A beats C)=0.6, and
that the outcomes of the three matches are independent of one another.
i) What is the probability that A wins both her matches and that B beats C?
ii) What is the probability that A wins both her matches?
iii) What is the probability that A loses both her matches?
iv) What is the probability that each one person wins one match? 10pts
3. The sales manager of a large company selected a random sample of  n = 10 salespeople and
determined for each one the values of  x = years of sales experience and  y = annual sales (in
thousands of dollars). A scatter plot of the resulting  ( x, y ) pairs showed a marked linear pattern.
a. Suppose that the sample correlation coefficient is  r = 0.75  and that the average annual sales is
y = 100.  If a particular salesperson is 2 standard deviations above the mean in terms of
experience, what would you predict for that person’s annual sales?
b. If particular person whose sales experience is 1.5 standard deviations below the average
experience is predicted to have an annual sales value that is 1 standard deviation below the
average annual sales, what is the value of  r ? 10pts
4. We expect that students who do well on the midterm exam in a course will usually also do well on
the final exam. Gary Smith of Pomona College looked at the exam scores of all 346 students who
took his statistics class over a 10-year period. The least squares line for predicting final exam score
from midterm exam score was  yˆ  = 46.6 + 0.41 x . Octavio scores 10 points above the class mean on
the midterm. How many points above the class mean do you predict that he will score on the final?
Explain. 10pts
5. Portfolios often contain more than two investments. The rules for means and variances continue to
apply, though the arithmetic gets messier. A portfolio containing proportions  a or 500 Index Fund,
b of Investment Grade Bond, and  c of Diversified International Funding has return
R = aW + bX + cY . Because  a, b and  c are the proportions invested in the three funds,
a + b + c = 1 . The following information is given:
W = annual return on 500 Index Fund,  mW = 11.12% s W = 17.46%
X = annual return on Investment Grade Bond Fund  m X = 6.46% s X = 4.18%
Y = annual return on Diversified International Fund mY = 11.1% s Y = 15.62%
rWX = -0.22 rWY = 0.56 r XY = -0.12

a. Find the mean and variance of the portfolio return  R .

b. A basic well-diversified portfolio has 60% in 500 Index, 20% in Investment Grade Bond, and
20% in Diversified International. What are the (historical) mean and standard deviation of the
annual returns for this portfolio? 20pts

6. A study of the health of teenagers plans to measure the blood cholesterol level of a simple random
sample of youth of ages 13 to 16 years. The researchers will report the mean  x from their samples as
an estimate of the mean cholesterol level m in this population.
i) Explain to someone who knows no statistics what it means to say that  x is un unbiased
estimator of m
ii) The sample result  x is an unbiased estimator of the population truth m no matter what size
sample the study chooses. Explain to someone who knows no statistics why a large sample
gives more trustworthy results than a small sample. 10pts

7. The weight of the eggs produced by a certain breed of hen is normally distributed with mean 65
grams (g) and standard deviation 5 g. If cartons of such eggs can be considered simple random
samples of size 12 from the population of all eggs, what is the probability that the weight of a carton
falls between 750 g and 825 g? 10pts

8. Suppose that 20% of all Internet Users have posted photos online. A sample survey interviews a
simple random sample of 1555 Internet users.

i) Describe the distribution of the number in the sample who have posted photos online.
ii) Determine the probability that 300 or fewer of the people in the sample have posted photos
online. 10pts
