BKF1523 ENGINEERING ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM

REPORT:
A SEMINAR ABOUT INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, MALAYSIA (IEM)
On 20 November 2013 (Wednesday), all undergraduate degree students have
attended a seminar that have been given by the president of IEM Pahang Branched, Ir
Tuan Ahmad Kamal bin Kunji. This seminar was held in auditorium of UMP library,
Gambang campus. This seminar was started from 2.30pm to 4.00pm. The main
objective of the seminar is to introduce about Institution of Engineers, Malaysia
(IEM). There are 3 separable parts in this seminar, those are introduction to IEM,
introduction to BEM,and route to Corporate Member IEM and Professional Engineer
IEM.
In the very beginning, Ir Tuan Ahmad Kamal bin Kunji introduced about the
structure of IEM. IEM was formed in 1959. Until March 2013, IEM possess 26362
members from different branches in Malaysia. In Malaysia, there is total 12 branches,
those including Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Pulau Pinang, Malacca, Negeri
Sembilan, Sarawak (Kuching) , Miri, Sabah, Selangor and Perlis and Kedah, however
Perlis and Kedah have the same branch. The headquarter of IEM was located in
Petaling Jaya, Selangor. IEM aim to promote the profession of engineering.
There are seven grades of memberships in IEM, those are honorary member,
incorporated member, associate member, fellow member, corporate member, graduate
member and student member. For engineering students from IPT or IPTS, they can
register themselves as student member when they are taking engineering related
course. They have to download the IEM(S) form from IEM official website
(www.myiem.org.my). The annual membership fee for student member is RM20.
After filling the form, engineering students have to get the signature from Dean of the
Faculty.
IEM is a professional learned society that organize a lot of activities for the
members. For instance, IEM held technical talk, visits, engineering course, seminars
and other related activities for their members. As a student member, engineering
students are allowed to attend all the activities. By joining all the activities mentioned,
they will learn more details about the route to Professional Engineer besides gaining
some precious engineering experience or skills. After all, students will have a wider
vision on global issues.

On the other hand, Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a regulating body

for engineering practices in Malaysia that set-up under the Registration of Engineers
Act, 1967. Another act that related to BEM is Registration of Engineers Regulations
1990 (revised 2003). Thus, only professional Engineers (PE) and registered
graduate Engineers are entitled to practice engineering in Malaysia. Graduated
Engineers can involve themselves in professional activities by work as practicing
engineers, educators or researchers.
For organization without professional engineers, candidates (graduated
engineers) require to maintain Log Book, submit it to Mentor regularly and to IEM
annually for endorsement. Besides, candidates need to have regular meeting with
mentor to get advice or guidance in their work. Graduates registering with the BEM
after 1 January 2005 are required to attend Mandatory Courses and undergo a
specified period of Professional Development Programme (PDP).
Basically, Professional Development Programme (PDP) are courses that
related to code of ethics, health and safety at work, engineering management practice,
and some other course related to graduates branch of engineering. Besides, fresh
graduate required to complete not less than 30 hours of PDP which includes
attendance at technical talks, seminars, society or association meetings, and
community services.
For preparation of Professional Interview (PI) or Professional Assessment
Examination (PAE), engineers need to submit report on training and experience, and
technical report with drawings or other related document. Afterward, candidates need
to sit for an oral interview. Generally, oral interview questions included basic
engineering, training and experience, project, drawing or calculation. The minimum
duration for the oral interview is about 40 minutes. Lastly, candidates also need to
write 2 essays to complete the assessment. One essay question will be created from
Report of Training and Experience whereas another essay question is ethics essay.
To conclude, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and details about
engineering professional bodies such as IEM and BEM. Last but not least, I also have
a clearer and better view about future career pathway of engineering profession after
attending this interesting seminar.
