Digital Cross-Connect
(System Overview)
• The 3600, 3645, 3664 and 36120 MainStreet large
multiplexer systems are intelligent, modular networking
nodes that can be tailored to meet diverse requirements.

• All MainStreet systems support a wide variety of

international standards-compliant interfaces for
primary rate, voice and data. They feature value-added
applications such as voice compression, sub-rate
switching, frame relay and integral LAN bridging.
Digital Cross-Connect
(System Overview)
• The MainStreet large multiplexer systems are built
from common physical components, such as shelves and
cards. They provide a designed-in migration path, so
that you can upgrade them in the field as networking
capacity grows and special-purpose applications evolve.

• All MainStreet large multiplexer systems are fully

software controlled and can be managed from local and
remote management stations using the Newbridge CPSS
• management protocol.

3600 MainStreet Bandwidth Manager
The 3600 MainStreet Bandwidth Manager is an integrated voice and
data multiplexer that operates in the E1 (2.048 Mb/s) and T1 (1.544
Mb/s) primary rate environments.

It supports circuit-switched voice, circuit- and packet-switched data

(X.25 and frame relay) and LAN internetworking for medium to
large applications. The 3600 MainStreet system provides a 64 Mb/s
fully non-blocking DS0 DCS for up to 32 T1 or E1 network links.

Digital Cross Connect
(System Overview)
• Digital Cross-Connect (DXX) is a bandwidth
manager. You can utilize your existing
infrastructure/bandwidth in the most efficient
way by adopting this technology. Pakistan
telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL)
provides nation wide telecommunication
services for Pakistan. A large portion of PTCL
network uses digital telephone exchanges and
digital transmission media.
Digital Cross Connect
(System Overview)
• Digital exchanges have designed to carry
analogue voice and the only digital interface
that is available at the local exchange or
transit exchange is the standard ITU
recommended interface G703 that is 2Mb/s.
System Overview
• The 2 Mb/s system contains 30 PCM channels at
a rate of 64 Kb/s per customer. Most people and
organizations are usually do not require and can
not afford the whole 2Mb/s stream due to lack of
better bandwidth utilization. The problem is then
to extract or drop individual 64 Kb/s channels at
the local exchanges and accurate feed these
channels to subscribers. Subscribers need the fast
and accurate exchange of information (Data and
Voice) with minimum amount of capital
expenditure.
System Overview
• For the extraction of individual 64 Kb/s channels
from the exchange 2 Mb/s stream and its channel
level cross connection with the customers an
arrangement called digital access cross connect
system is designed using the Optical Fibre
network system, DRS etc. The digital access cross
connect system (DXX) is based on the Optical
Fibre Network of the country and this system
enables the provision of lower/sub rate traffic as
compared to other media. This is also called as
transport and access network for data and voice.
System Overview
• Digital access cross connection (DXX) system can
provide a variety of data and speech bands
sub-rate multiplexing from 1200 bps to 64 Kb/s
and up to 2Mb/s along with synchronous cross-
connect facilities. This system effectively utilizes
the 2 Mb/s stream and is termed as intelligent
Bandwidth Manager.
Key Features of DXX
• The DXX provides a complete networking
solution to the network operators having its
following benefits:
• The best technical solution
• The best network value
• The best flexibility for networking
• Modularity
• Manageability
• Expandability
Key Features of DXX
• Higher service quality and hence higher customer satisfaction.
• Cost saving by reducing line cost. Efficient utilization of existing
transmission bandwidth/infrastructure.
• This system is compatible with new emerging standards and
future technologies. This voice/data network not only provides
the standard features, such as high reliability, mobile or fixed,
redundancy of paths, security, fault diagnosis and total network
management but is also able to provide modern futuristic
facilities such as video conferencing, integrated voice, data
management, ISDN, ATM, Frame Relay and SDH back bone
network on same platform.
Key Features of DXX
• Advanced network-wide management (The
whole system has a centralized operation and
management called Network Management
System (NMS) which has unique features like
remote software upgrading and fault diagnosis
etc).
System Overview
In PTCL, presently two systems are being used
for the provision of DXX facilities to the
subscribers namely:

•MARTIS DXX (Tellabs).

•Newbridge

3. Rawalpindi 5 7 10 17
4. Islamabad 6 9 7 16
5. Peshawar 2 2 2 4
G-Total Nodes = 145
System Overview
• About 1200 circuits are available in these DXX,
840 circuits are meant for Data service and other
for VIP channels.

• Up-till now there are about 70 customers

(10=local in Islamabad & Pindi & 22 for
Domestic and rest for International.
Network Management System (NMS)
• The whole system has a centralized operation
and management called Network Management
System (NMS) which has unique features like
remote software upgrading and fault diagnosis
etc.
• The DXX NMS provides all necessary tools for
the operator in order to bring the flexible
hardware of the DXX network to life. In
practice this means true end to end control over
the network, from the backbone level to the
customer premises.
Network Management System (NMS)
• Different kinds of network tasks like assigning capacity,
provisioning new services, monitoring network
performance, and identifying faults can all be remotely
handled from a single point NMS.

• The NMS itself handles the fault, configuration,

accounting, and performance & security management
function for every unit, node, modem and service in the
network. There is also facility of on-line billing system,
you can collect data from OMC directly and save your
data processing time (round about 20 days per month)
& this is another major application of DXX.
Network Management System (NMS)
• During a major fault, traffic can be re-routed
automatically, so that existing traffic is un-
affected and repair or replacement can be
carried out. The operator can also assign various
service categories to the customers so that the
operator's most valuable business is always
protected.
Overview of Newbridge System
• The system installed for Digital Cross-Connect is
Newbridge System i.e. 3600 Main Street. The
general structure of a Newbridge Node is
described as follows:
• The power feeding is through batteries attached
inside the rack for + 5V, +12VDC & -48VDC
which caters the requirements of individual units
in the node. It may also be single or dual shelf
node with 12 slots in a single and 24 slots in a
double rack by means of an expansion card.
Overview of Newbridge System

• Both data and voice circuit facilities are available

in this system. The individual card’s functioning
description is as follows:
1. DUAL E1: It is a unit usually used for trunk connections
and for data circuits above 256Kb/s. As the name
implies, there are two 2 MB/s ports i.e. for 2x2 Mb/s
streams.

2. DINC & 2B1Q CARDS: Both are line interface Cards

with capacity up to 128K if DPM is attached with the
card. For data rate above 128K HDSL is required to
attach.
Overview of Newbridge System

3. DCC: It is for data handling on interfaces like

V.35, X.21, RS-232 for 1.92Kb/s.

4. LGE & LGS: These are voice cards with 612

circuits facilities for hot line and number
extension facilities.

5 E&M CARDS: Works as hybrid for Analog 6 or

4 wire interfaces.
Overview of Newbridge System
6.DSP: It has a DSP Card for high compressed
multiplexing and efficient utilisation available
Bandwidth.

Both of the systems Newbridge & Tellabs have

compatibility for frame relay and ATM
technology which is expected to come to Pakistan
in near future.
