NATIONAL TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT AND WORLD

CHAMPIONSHIP QUICK GUIDE

February 21, 2012
This Championship Quick Reference Guide is designed to be used during Tiger-Rock Academy Trainer
clinics, in class during competition training cycles prior to a World Championship or National Tournament,
and during the competition event itself.
During the event make sure to ask questions of the event managers if there is the slightest doubt about
the interpretation of a directive in this guide.
We want participants to have positive experiences. Being informed is important so make sure to explain
and mentor the competitors in your ring and their parents efficiently without appearing rushed. Remember
to use transformational language while following this guide.

RING SIZES
Single: 6 Mats by 6 Mats
Team: 6 Mats by 12 Mats
XTREME AND TRADITIONAL FREE STYLE SYNCRONIZED TEAM COMPETITION
In team synchronized competition, two person teams can be any rank and age except a student is
required to be a green belt or above for Xtreme. Guidelines for judging and rules outlined in individual
Xtreme or Traditional Free style programs apply to Synchronized Team Competition (Time limit guideline
exception: 1.5 minutes for individual and 2 minutes for Synchronized Team).

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT AND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

HO-AM FORM COMPETITION
All ranks perform the Ho-Am form through 5th degree competition
a. White/Yellow (First 6 lines)
b. Green/Blue (First 12 lines)
c. Brown/Red (First 17 lines)
d. Black Belt youth (First 23 lines)
e. Black Belt adult (All 38 lines)
STEP 1: Split divisions, led by assigned official or highest-ranking Center Judge of involved rings.
__ 1) Look on division packet for the number of divisions and average number in division.
__ 2) In junior and youth divisions, beginning with the youngest, line up students by age into the
number of divisions assigned.
__ 3) Move the smaller and/or female competitors into younger divisions.
__ 4) Move larger male competitors into older divisions.
__ 5) Continue 3 & 4 until each division is of relatively equal size and females are largest in division.
__ 6) Divide adult divisions (16 and up) by size.
__ 7) Have each Center Judge take his/her division to his/her ring.
STEP 2: Go to ring and get ready.
__ 1) From right to left facing chairs order is: Timekeeper, Scorekeeper, Center, Judge #2, Judge #3,
and Practice Judge if present.

Updated 2/21/12 BDK&SO

__ 2) Timekeeper should find stop watch and make sure it works correctly.
__ 3) Scorekeeper should find clipboard and begin filling out judging sheet.
__ 4) Remember:
Center Judge must be a CTT and one rank above the highest rank in the division.
Assisting judges should be TTT or CTT judges one rank above the highest rank in the
division.
Everyone judge in ring must be in uniform or blazer attire (no people in plain clothes!)
STEP 3: Record names for forms competition.
1. Line up contestants in ring.
2. Collect competitor online confirmations/receipts.
3. Assign one judge to warm up and stretch out contestants.
4. Take the competitor forms and shuffle them so that the order of competition will be random.
5. Oversee while scorekeeper writes down contestant names on judging sheet.
6. Bow contestants in and direct them to sit behind ring line and listen for their names to be called.
STEP 4: Set average forms score with the first 3 competitors. Competitors get two tries to
complete their forms correctly.
__ 1) Call up first competitor to stand at attention and bow in.
__ 2) Direct competitor to perform form.
__ 3) Confer with other judges about possible deduction mistakes. (At least 2 of 3 judges must
identify a mistake) If only one judge saw a mistake, no mistake was made.
__ 4) If no mistakes, have competitor sit to one side and go to # 8 below.
__ 5) If mistake(s), the competitor is not given a score but rather asked to repeat the form, If the
competitor performs the form correctly on the second try a 1/2 point deduction is subtracted from
the combined score given by the three judges. For example if all 3 judges score 3 points for
artistic expression for a total of 9 points on the second try then a point is deducted from the
total resulting in a score of 8.5. If a mistake was made on the second try as well, two point
deductions would be subtracted totaling a 1 point deduction for a score of 8.
__ 6) If mistake(s), explain the mistake(s) to competitor before stepping off the mat.
__ 7) Call 2nd competitor. Follow 1 - 6 above.
__ 8) Call 3rd competitor. Follow 1 - 6 above.
__ 9) Have competitors stand side by side in front of judges.
st
nd
rd
__ 10) Score 1 , 2 then 3 competitor after asking each to step forward.
__ 11) Call out artistic scores as each competitor steps forward beginning with your own score, verify
that scores are recorded correctly then announce a mistake deduction of or 1 point if
deductions apply.
__ 12) Direct first 3 competitors to bow and sit down behind ring line.
STEP 5: Complete judging everyone else in the division.
__ 1) Proceed as above except score each competitor immediately.
__ 2) When determining artistic expression scores:
Assess performance according to range of scores set with the first 3 competitors, scoring
higher or lower accordingly.
DO NOT raise artistic expression score to compensate for mistake deduction(s).
DO NOT allow reference point to shift higher or lower as ring continues.
STEP 6: Determine winners; break ties.
__ 1) In the Place column, write 1 next to highest score, 2 by next highest, and 3 by next 2 highest.
__ 2) If there is a tie that would affect awarding of medals, you must have runoff(s).
__ 3) Score as above, using the same artistic reference point, except allow only one try this time;
record scores in runoff column.
__ 4) Determine winner by higher score. DO NOT point to the winner.
__ 5) If both get identical scores, repeat tie-breaking process until tie is broken.
__ 6) After ties are settled, record places in Place column.

that a mistake was made.
__ 8) If only one competitor makes deduction mistake(s), that competitor cycles through one more
time (the other only readies).
__ 9) If competitor does not make deduction mistake(s) on second try, winner is chosen using artistic
expression criteria influenced by awareness that that one competitor received two tries; repeater

Updated 2/21/12 BDK&SO

All points and strikes observed before BREAK is called are recorded, and all strikes
observed after BREAK is called are recorded.
If same competitor earns point(s) and commits strike infraction(s), both points and strikes
are recorded.
NOTE: Stepping completely off mat with one entire foot during free sparring competition
is a strike infraction.
Stepping off mat with partial foot during free sparring competition is not a strike infraction;
there must be part of one foot on top of the mat.

SEQUENCE WHEN SINGLE POINT OR STRIKE IS CALLED

When any judge calls BREAK after seeing a strike or point, the following occurs:
Center will call for points, and all three judges score simultaneously.
Judges raise flag matching flag color to competitor he/she saw make a point as described above
under the Points section.
Two out of three judges must agree on point(s), perhaps ascertained by quick conference.
Center MAY NOT overrule other judges.
If one judge sees a kick and other sees a punch, then NO POINTS.
If one judge sees a kick to the helmet and the other sees same kick to the body time should be
stopped allowing judges to discuss the calls. If an agreement can be reached that it was the
same kick and target a point(s) can be awarded. If an agreement cannot be reached then NO
POINT.
Center will then call for strikes, and all three judges score simultaneously.
Judges raise flag matching flag color to competitor who made the strike as described above
under the Strikes section.
Two out of three judges must agree on infraction(s), perhaps ascertained by quick conference.
Center MAY NOT overrule other judges.
If strike(s) awarded, Center should direct scorekeeper to mark appropriate number of hatch
marks by name of offender.
Double disqualification can occur.
SEQUENCE WHEN DOUBLE STRIKE OR POINT IS CALLED
If the Judge calling BREAK sees a double strike or point (both competitors receiving points or both
receiving strikes), they should notify the Center immediately, in which case the procedure for the Center
Judge is different.
Center will call for White points, and all three judges score simultaneously and are recorded.
Center will call for Red points, and all three judges score simultaneously and are recorded.

Center will then call for White strikes, and all three judges score simultaneously and are recorded.
Center will call for Red strikes, and all three judges score simultaneously and are recorded.

ADDITIONAL
Only Center can stop time. Time should be stopped if sparring is stopped for more than 10 seconds.
First competitor to 5 points or the competitor that is ahead when timekeeper calls time is the winner.
Rounds are 2 minutes long.
If time is called and points are even, then enter Sudden Winner round - next point wins.
o In the unlikely event that a competitor would score an accumulated 5 points and earn an
accumulated 3 strikes simultaneously, the strikes would prevail and competitor would be disqualified.
o Disqualification is defined as losing the match but does not disqualify the competitor to qualify for a
3 place finish.
At end of match:
o Contestants are told to bow to each other and then to judges.
o Center raises appropriate flag color of winner then congratulates both competitors.
o Center escorts winner to Scorekeeper to have winner state name and verifies Scorekeeper records
winner correctly.
o If winner must spar again immediately, he/she gets 1 minute rest.
