From the architect. Block 32 occupies a strategic position in the vast programme to renovate the Duchre neighbourhood, in Lyon. The OPAC du Rhne
housing association has produced a building which incorporates 33 social rental housing units, 1,500m2 of oce space dedicated to health-related activities, and has
retail space throughout the ground oor. Its central location, at the crossroads between the new Abb Pierre square and the east / west boulevard, means it is highly
visible and its proximity to the athletics hall imposes the need for a resoundingly urban attitude.
Following on from the architects' work on the Mozart urban development zone in Saint-Priest, the intention was to meet the new challenges of the urban
environment, promote the use of wood as a material and show that urban living can be pleasurable and fun.Despite the technical complexity of the building, the
architectural style is soft and joyful. A dierent architectural style denotes each of the programme's components: social housing, the service hub (medical centre),
and the retail space at the base.A resoundingly urban attitudeVarious factors relating to the site and the urban planning speci cations mean this project has to strike
an armatively urban posture. The proximity of the athletics hall1 is the main determining factor as the north facade of the housing block is less than 7 metres from
the south facade of the sports facility. The scale and unusual shape of the hall make it a benevolent, but demanding neighbour. The focus was placed on developing
the links between the new building and the sports facility. To the east, the steps of the square absorb the signi cant dierence in height. To the west the communal
garden, suspended above the shops, occupies the gap between the two buildings.
The ground oor and rst oor which run the entire length of the complex form a glazed pedestal which supports the body which is composed of the two
buildings separated by a discontinuity which opens up views onto the inner sections of the complex and the athletics hall. The base of the building eects the
transition between the private and public space, with its very speci c topography, characterised by a height dierence of around 2.5 metres. Above the housing
block, an attic oor set back from the main facade crowns the building, marked out by the use of dierent materials.

Won & Won 63.5 / Doojin Hwang

From the architect. Won & Won 63.5, a rental oce and commercial building, is located
in Gangnam. The name Won & Won 63.5 is a mixture of the clients' family name and the
building's full height of 63.5m. The clients are interested in re-interpreting traditional design in
a contemporary approach; they look for sensitive and detailed design, above the conventional
market demands for the building type.
The most prominent visual characteristic of this 15-story building is the use of brick. The
softness of the material and the human labor involved in the building process are the key
aesthetical points. The middle section of the entire front facade is a porous brick wall with 50%
porosity; it is a 'pixellated' wall, with bricks as pixels. The wall creates a sharp contrast between
day and night, and works as an excellent sun screen, increasing the 'green' performance of this
west-facing building. A group of openings on the wall in various sizes work as railings for the
balconies behind; they also provide 'human presence' on the facade, an unusual feature for a
building of this height and size. The signage design, fully integrated with architecture and
lighting, pleasant and easy-to-read in the night as well.
Another unique feature is the sunken garden with a slope ceiling covered with supermirror stainless panels, which works like a periscope, allowing the basement and the front
street to exchange views. To the south of the building is a public pedestrian path, connecting
Gangnamdaero in the front and the alley in the back. The railing along this path has an
integrated indirect lighting, keeping the path safe in the night. Overall, the eort for ecient
design for a rental building co-exists with the concern for public safety and amenity.
