1. Dhina porutham : Dhina portham is essential for prosperous life with out poverty and diseases. You have to
count from Girls Nakshatra to Boys Nakshatra. While counting if you get 2,4,6,8,9,11,13,15,18,20,24 or 26 there is
Dina porutham exist between the two. The result is Uthamam. While counting except 1st quarter in 12th, except
4th quarter in 14th and except 3rd quarter in 16th are Mathimam. All others and Ashtama Rashi Nakshatras are
Athamam or no match. Ashtama Rashi means 8th rasi. For example 8th for Tarurus is Saggittarius. Moolam 1,2,3,4
Pooradam 1,2,3,4 Uthiradam 1 belongs to that rashi. When girls Nakshatra belongs to Rishab (Taurus) All
nakshatras of Saggittarius wont match.
Aega Nakhsatra / Same Nakshatra: When both boy and girl have Rohini, Thiruvathirai, Poosam, Maham, Hastham,
Thirivonam Dhina porutham will be uthamam. When both have Ashwini, Bharani, Karthikai, Mrigashrish,
Punarpoosam, Uthiram, Chithirai, Anusham the Dina portuham result will be Mathimam. When both have same
rashi boys nakshatra should precede girls. When both have same Nakshatra should precede that of the girl. The
rest 13 wont match. If you get 27 while counting match is considered, only if the rasi is same otherwise there is no
match. While counting from girls Nakshatra if boys comes as 7th, it is called vatham. While counting from boys
nakshatra if girls comes as 22nd it is called vinashika. Vahtam and Vinashika sould be rejected.
This is primary method for calculating dhina porutham. There is other method using Janmam, Anu Janmam, thri
janmam. This is least used method, hence I am not explaining it here.
2. Gana porutham: If both boy and girl belongs to Rakshash gana the match is uthamam. If boy belongs to
rakshash Gana and the girl belongs to any Gana the match will be Mathimam. If girl belongs to rakshash Gana and
there is no match if boy belongs to any other gana. This match will determine mangala or auspiciousness.
3. Mahendra porutham : If counted from girls nakshatra if you get 4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25 the match is uthamam.
Otherwise no match. This match is considered for offspring (children)
4. Sthree Theerkam : While counting from the Girls nakshatra if boys comes above 13 the match is uthamam. If it
comes above 7 mathima porutham. This porutham gives good longevity and prosperity.

both boy and girl has male yoni the match is mathimam. Otherwise the match is Athamam or no match. Yoni match
is considered for physical compatibility or sexual compatibility.
6. Rasi porutham: If both the boy and girl belongs to the same rashi or boys rashi is greater than 6 while counting
from girls rasi the match is uthamam. While counting from girls rashi if boys rashi comes at 3,4 the match is
mathimam. 6th and 8th rashi is sashtamsam and hence wont match 2nd and 5th wont match. The purpose of rasi
porutham is offspring and other important thins in life. While counting from girl if 3 comes the effect is sorrow,
discomfort and suffering. If 4 comes there will be poverty and struggle. If 5 comes there will be misfortune and
unhappiness in the family. If 7 comes it will give auspicious results like progress and prosperity in the family. While
counting from groom if brides rasi occurs at 2,6 or 12 the above said ill effect will prevail.

boy belongs to simha or vrishika it is uthamam. If girls rasi becomes vasiya for a given boys rasi it is mathimam.
Otherwise no vasiya portham exits.

Same Nakshatra and Same Rashi Analysis
A. For Bride & Groom
If the Nakshatra of Bride and Groom is same and is one of following
a) Rohini,Aridra, Pushya, Magha, Vishakha, Shravana, Uttarabhadrapada, Revati then it is Auspicious.

that of the Bride then it is also considered to be Auspicious.
e) If the Bride's Nakshtara is one of - Ashwini, Kruttika, Rohini, Mrugashira, Ardra, Pushya, Magha,
Hasta,Swati,Vishakha,Purvashada, Shatabishaka - it is auspicious if the Bride's Nakshatra precedes that of the

Anuradha and boys Nakshatra is Jyestha )
Nadi Dosha relates to health, longevity and happiness of issues.
Same Nadi will cause problems (Regarding longevity of the partner), hence Maha Mrityunjaya Japa or Homa is a
very power remedy for Nadi Dosha.
Mahamrityunjaya Japa/homa should be done on Mondays in any Shiva temple.

Birth of the child. Again this Dosha doesn't apply to Daughters.

Bride-Groom: Same Nakshatra and Same Rashi Analysis

Anuradha and boys Nakshatra is Jyestha )
Nadi relates to health, longevity and happiness of issues.
Same Nadi will cause problems (Regarding longevity of the partner), hence Mahamruthunjaya Japa/Homa is a very
power remedy for Nadi Dosha.
Mahamruthunjaya Japa/homa should be done on Mondays in any Shiva temple.

What is Nadi
As per Ayurveda human body have three elements named, Vaat (), Pitt () and Cuff (). If you have Vaat
element more than it should be, you should not eat the foods related to Vaat. If you will still not avoid as a result
you could have problem related to Vaat which is High Uric Acid, Gout etc. Just like that there are 3 Nadi in astrology.
Aadi, Madhya, Antya are three Nadi. If you and your partner have same Nadi, this is not considered good. If you
have different Nadi than your partner, that is good.
What happens if Nadi Dosha exists
If you and your partner have same Nadi you should not marry, this is a rule of matchmaking. But if someone ignore
the Nadi Dosha and marry with a person who have same Nadi, issues related to health would be there. You will feel
no attraction. You cannot expect your partner will love you a lot. There could be a lack of affection.
Is there any solution of Nadi Dosha? ( Pariharam )
In matchmaking most doshas are curable. There are countless people in the world who have such Nadi Dosha and
they are still enjoying the married life. In such exceptional cases the pariharam also exists.
If boy and girl have same Zodiac Sign of moon, the Nadi Dosha should not be considered. This is strong remedy
already exist in such horoscopes.
If both have same Nakshatra this is also a pariharam but if boy and girl have same Nakshatra, same Zodiac Moon
Sign then the Nadi Dosha disappear itself and relationship becomes more strong.
There are more pariharam of Nadi which is as follows
If boy and girl have strong ascendant, Nadi dosha could not harm.
If both have same ascendant and ascendant lord is in good position, Nadi Dosha cannot harm.
If you both have Venus in powerful position, Nadi Dosha cannot affect your affection. Love and attachment will be
there.
If boy and girl have Jupiters aspect on 7th house, relationship will never break.
If the lord of 5th house, 7th house, Jupiter and Venus are in good position in both horoscopes, Nadi Dosha should
not be considered.
Celebrities who have Nadi Dosha and Pariharam exist

Bollywood star Mithun and Geeta Bali both have same Madhya Nadi so this is a Nadi Dosha. But they are living
happy married life. Mithun has strong 5th house, strong 7th house and Jupiters aspect on ascendant.
Geeta Bali has Mercury and Venus in 7th house, the place of 2nd marriage (2nd house) is blessed with Jupiter.
Saif and Katrina Kaif, Amitabh and Jaya Bacchan, Dilip Kumar and Saira Bano have Nadi Dosham but they all have
Pariharam for their Nadi Doshas.
Nadi Dosh
Nadi is one of the important Kootas in match making for the purpose of marriage in Vedic Astrology . it indicates
health compatibility & out of 36 points in marital match making 8 points are given to Nadi . Nadi has given
maximum points and hence regarded as the most important factor by astrologers. The Nadi disagreement between
two is called as Nadi Dosha and generally regarded as the strict No for the marriage.
Nadi dosh is formed if both male and female are born under same Moon rashis, Nakshatra and Charan.
Charan-Vaid (1-4), same Moon rashi and same Nakshatra form Nadi Dosh.
There are three different Nadis Adi / Adhya / Aadh (start), Madhya (middle) and Antya (end) and they represent
"Prakriti" of an individual that is his/her body constitution. As per Ayurveda there are three different Prakritis- Vaat ,
Pita & Kapah. The Nadi Adi, Madhya and Antya Nadi are equivalent to Vaat , Pita & Kapah respectively.
The exact Nakshatra based classification is as follows
1.
2.
3.

ADI / Adhya / Aadh Nadi : People born in Ashwani , Ardhra , Punarvasu , Uttaraphalguni , Hasta , Jyeshta ,
Moola , Satabisha & Poorvabhadrapada have Adi Nadi.
Madhya Nadi : People born in Bharani , Mrigasira , Pushya , Poorvaphalguni , Chitra , Anuradha ,
Poorvashadha , Dhanshita & Uttarabhadrapada have Madhya Nadi .
Antya Nadi : People born in Kritika, Rohini, Aslesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttarashadha, Sravana &
Revati Nakshtras have Antya Nadi .

Nadi Dosha exists if proposed husband and wife are having same Nadi. Scientifically speaking having same Prakriti
means their offspring will be physically weaker. If Nadis of proposed husband and wife are different it is only then
marriage is recommended so they may have physically stronger children. However it is not accurate to reject a
proposal for marriage just because the girl & boy have same Nadi as in the Shastras its mentioned that if Nadis are
same then also some other things are to be watched and then the result should be predicted. Below are some
points to be checked .
1.
2.

If both Male and Female have same Moon Sign but the birth Nakshatras are different and both of them have
same Nadi, Nadi Dosh is said to be nullified.
If both Male and Female have same birth Nakshatra but the Moon Signs are different, Nadi Dosh is said to
be nullified in spite of both of them having same Nadi.

3.

If both Male and Female are born in the same Nakshatra but the Charana or Pada of Nakshatra is different,
Nadi Dosh is said to be nullified despite both of them having the same Nadi.

4.

The 5th House of Lagan kundali of both girl & boy should be checked as House No- 5 is considered house of
Children. If girl and boy have Nadi dosh 5th house gets effected that causes infertiliy.

5.

The placement of Jupiter in both girl & boy's horoscopes is most important as Jupiter is considered as
Putrakarak planet.

6.

Nadi Dosh is said to cause death of either one or both of the partners if both Male and Female are having
either Madhya or Ant Nadis.

Bhakoot Dosh
Moving on to Bhakut Dosh, if Moon Signs in the natal horoscopes of Male and Female are making a combination of
6-8, 9-5 or 12-2 with each other, Bhakut Dosh is said to be formed. For example, if Moon sign of the Male is Aries
and that of the Female is Virgo, then Bhakut Dosh of 6-8 is said to be formed as the Moon Sign of Female is sixth
counted from Moon Sign of Male and the Moon sign of Male is eighth counted from Moon sign of Female. Similarly
Bhakut dosh is considered for 9-5 and 12-2 placements of Moon signs. It is said that the Bhakut Dosh of 6-8 can
cause death to either of the partners, Bhakut dosh of 9-5 can cause delay, denial or loss of progeny and Bhakut
Dosh of 12-2 can cause poverty. However, Bhakut Dosh is said to be nullified if any of the following conditions is
observed :

If the Lord of Moon Signs is the same, Bhakut dosh is said to be nullified. For example 6-8 Bhakut dosh is said to be
nullified in case of Aries-Scorpio and Taurus-Libra and 12-2 Bhakut dosh is said to be nullified in case of CapricornAquarius.
If the Lord of Moon Signs are friendly with each other, Bhakut Dosh is said to be nullified. For example, Pisces-Aries
and Aries-Sagittarius.
The actual damage caused by Nadi Dosh and Bhakut Dosh is however different for different couples depending
upon some other important aspects present in both the horoscopes. These defects can do potential damages if
some other serious defects like Manglik Dosh, Pitra Dosh, Kaal Sarp Dosh, Shani Dosh, Rahu Dosh or Ketu Dosh are
present in one or both of the horoscopes along with Nadi Dosh and Bhakut Dosh whereas the bad effects of Nadi
Dosh and Bhakut Dosh can be controlled comparatively easily if there are some good yogas present in one or both
the horoscopes being considered for Match Making . Therefore the important factors mentioned in the article
named Match Making should also be seen and considered in the horoscopes of the couples, to predict accurate
results.
The bad effects of Nadi dosh and Bhakut Dosh can be reduced significantly with the help of astrological remedies
which usually include the application of Pooja, Yantras, Gemstones, Mantras and Charities. These remedies are
different for different horoscopes and a thorough study of both the horoscopes having Nadi Dosh and Bhakut Dosh
is required in order to prescribe proper remedies to reduce the bad effect of Nadi Dosh and Bhakut Dosh.
Ancient Marriage Compatibility
Chapter XIII: To Determine the Suitability of a Match
This is an excerpt on determining marriage compatibility from a mid-evil Indian text called Kalaprakasika
translated by N.P. Subramania Iyer. One can use these rules but needs to understand that the interpretations were
accurate for the 15th century, and therefore should be adjusted for the modern world.
The planetary conditions for determining the suitability or otherwise of the bridegroom to the bride and vice versa
are delineated in this Chapter.
There are ten Considerations necessary to the forming of a correct judgment as to the suitability of a proposed
matrimonial union. These are 1. Dhinam, 2. Ganam, 3. Mahendhram, 4. Stree-Dheergham, 5. Yoni, 6. Rasi, 7.
Rasyadhipati, 8. Vasyam, 9. Rajju, and 10. Vedhai.
1.

Dhina-Count the asterisms from the asterism of the bride to that of the bridegroom (both inclusive).

The first, viz, the asterism at birth, is Janma; the 2nd asterism signifies Sampat-fortune; the 3rd denotes Vipatdisaster; the 4th favours Kshema-well-being; the 5th produces Pratyara-obstruction; the 6th shows Sadhaka-aid;
the 7th inclines to Vadham-slaughter; the 8th tends to Mitra-friendship; the 9th leads to Parama-Mitra intimate
friendship. The asterism of the bridegroom should be the 2nd, 4th, 6th, or 8th from that of the bride. If it be the 3rd, the
5th, or the 7th, it shows disagreement. Of the second Pariyaya the 1st quarter of the 3rd, the 4th quarter of the 5th, and
the 3rd quarter of the 7th asterism should be avoided. The other quarters of these asterisms are good. The asterisms
of the 3rd Pariyaya produce no evil.
The asterism of the bridegroom should not be the 27 th, or order from that of the bride. The adverse effects arising
from such a position will, however, be diminished of the two asterisms belong to the same sign. If the asterisms
belong to different signs the effect will be bad.
Another asterism to be avoided is the 22nd, counting from Janma-Nakshatra of either. This position of asterism is
described as Vadha-vainasika the evil effects of which are set forth by Sage Kasyapa.
A man and a woman born under any of the following pairs of asterisms will form an unsuitable match and their
union will be unhappy: Krittika and Aslesha; Aslesha and Swati; Chitra and Purvasadha; Anuradha and Sravishta;
Sravishta and Bharani; Satabisha and Krittika.
A couple born under any of the following pairs of asterisms will make a happy match: Ardra and Uttarapalguni;
Purvaphalguni and Anuradha; Chitra and Pushya, Punarvasu and Hasta. The last pair favours the progress and
development of the family.
Asterisms Jyeshta and Sathabisha incline to ruin the family. Uttaraphalguni and Mrigasirsha, Hasta, and Mula-these
two pairs tend to cause death and pecuniary loss respectively.
If the asterisms of the bridegroom and the bride be Rohini and Magha, or Purvabadhrapada and Rohini, they will
have many sons; if they be Aswini and Punarvasu, or, Swati and Uttarashada, the couple will give birth to
daughters; if they be Revati anad Ardra or Jyeshta and Uttaraphalguni there will be rancor between husband and

wife; if they be Visakha and Magha, wicked sons will be born; if they be Visakha and Sravana, the husband and wife
will become enemies; if they be Aswini and Sravana, the husband and wife will live apart; if they be
Uttarabhadrapada and Mrigasirsha widowhood must be predicted; if they be Uttarashadha and Revati, there will be
enjoyment; if they be Mula and Purvabhadrapada, there will be mutual affection; of the be Bharani and Pushya, the
husband and wife will live in affluence.
In many cases, the Janma-Nakshatra of the bridegroom and the bride may be one and the same; if such JanmaNakshatra be any of the following, it would be excellent: Rohini, Ardra, Magha, Hasta, Visakha, Sravana,
Uttarabhadrapada and Revati.
If the common Janma-Nakshatra be any of the following, the effect would be neutral: Aswini, Krittika, Mrigasirsha,
Punarvasu, Pushya, Purvaphalguni, Uttaraphalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purvashadha, and Uttarashadha.
If the Janma-Nakshatra be any of the following, the match should be considered unsuitable and marriage avoided:
Bharani, Aslesha, Swati, Jyeshta, Mula, Sravishta, Satabisha, and Purvabhadrapada.
If the Janma-Nakshatra belong to two signs, the stellar quarter of the bridegroom should be the earlier. If it be
otherwise, it will cause harm to the couple.
If the Janma-Nakshatra of the bridegroom and the bride belong to the same sign, that of the bridegroom must be
prior to that of the bride; otherwise, it is inauspicious.
Exception Among asterisms that belong to one and the same sign, the following should be left out of
consideration: Bharani and Krittika, Sravishta and Satabisha, Pushya and Aslesha.
The asterism of the bridegroom may rightly be the next, in order, to that of the bride, if the asterism of the latter be
any of the following: Aswini, Krittika, Mrigasirsha, Magha, Hasta, Swati, Purvashadha and Satabisha.
Janma-Nakshatra belonging to two Sings if the bridegroom and the bride have a common Janma-Nakshatra
belonging to two signs, the stellar quarter belonging to the first sign should be that of the bride. Any of the
remaining three stellar quarters of the other sign may be that of the bridegroom. If the stellar quarters be equally
divided between the two signs, the sign for the first two should be that of the bridegroom.
1.

Gana: The following asterisms belong to Deva Gana: Aswini, Mrigasirsha, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati,
Anuradha, Sravana and Revati.

Manushya Gana: Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Purvaphalguni, Uttarabhadrapada.

Rakshasa Gana: Krittika, Aslesha, Magha, Chitra, Visakha, Jyeshta, Mula, Sravishta, and Satabisha.
If the Gana of the bridegroom and of the bride be the same it signifies suitability; it is excellent. If their Ganas be
Deva Gana and Manushya Gana respectively, it is of middling quality; if they be of Deva and Rakshasa Ganas, it is
very bad; the association of Manushya with Rakshasa Gana is fatal.
If the asterisms of the bridegroom and the bride be Manushya and Rakshasa Gana respectively, the marriage will
prove harmful for both.
Exception: The adverse effects of Rakshasa Gana will diminish if the asterism of the bride at birth be beyond the
14th from the asterism of the bridegroom.

1. Mahendhra: The Janma-Nakshatra of the bridegroom should be the 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd or 25th
asterism from that of the bride. This promotes wellbeing and prolongs life.

1. Stri-Dhirgham: The asterism of the bridegroom should be beyond the 13th asterism from that of the bride
to satisfy the point of suitability. Some writers hold that it is enough if the said asterism is beyond the 7 th.
1.

Yoni: This word literally means the organ of the reproduction in the female animal creation. The genital
characteristics ascribed to asterisms constitute another point in which there should be agreement in the
horoscopes the bridegroom and the bride: Aswini and Satabisha Horse; Bharani and Revati Elephant;
Pushya and Krittika Sheep; Rohini and Mrigasirsha Serpent; Aslesha and Punarvasu Cat; Magha and
Purvaphalguni Rat; Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashadha and Uttarabhadrapada Cow; Swati and Hasta Buffalo;

Visakha and Chitra Tiger; Jyeshta and Anuradha Deer; Mula and Ardra Dog; Purvashadha and Sravana
Monkey; Sravistha and Purvabhadrapada Lion.
Monkey and Sheep, Deer and Elephant, Horse and Buffalo, Cow and Tiger, Rat and Cat, Serpent and Rat, Serpent
and Mongoose, Dog and Deer these are mutually hostile- so, inauspicious. To show suitability the asterisms of the
couple should be of the same Yoni. If different, it is neutral; hostile yonis should be avoided.
1.

Rasi: The Janma-Rasi (the sign occupied by the Moon at birth) of the bridegroom should not be the 2nd from
the Janma-Rasi of the bride; in other words, the Janma-Rasi of the bride should not be the 12 th, in order,
from the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom for this position proves fatal. The converse should be the case; the
Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom. This tends to prolong life.

If the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom be the 3rd from the Janma-Rasi of the bride, there will be misery. The converse
of this position shows suitability and the couple will have a happy life.
If the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom be the 4th from the Janma-Rasi of the bride, in other words, if the Janma-Rasi of
the bride be the 10th from that of the bridegroom, they will become poor. If the position be the converse of this they
will grow rich.
If the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom be the 5th from that of the bride, there will be widowhood; the converse of this
position secures immunity from widowhood. She will be a Sumangali one in married life.
If the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom be the 6th from that of the bride, loss of sons must be predicted; the converse
favours birth of sons.
If the Janma-Rasis of the bridegroom and the bride be diametrically opposite to each other in the Zodiac, the couple
will have a long and happy life.
Exception Even if the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom be the 2 nd from that of the bride, the effect will be good if
such Janma-Rasi be an even sign. (In this case, the Janma-Rasi of the bride is the 12 th sign from that of the
bridegroom) If it be an odd sign, it will do harm.
Where the Janma-Rasi of the bridegroom is 6th from the Janma-Rasi of the bride, it will be felicitous, if the two Rasis
be any of the following pairs: Aries and Virgo; Sagittarius and Taurus; Libra and Pisces; Aquarius and Cancer; Leo
and Capricorn; Gemini and Scorpio.
1.

Rasyadhipati: Mars is the lord of Aries and Scorpio. His friends are Mercury and Venus. The other planets
are his enemies.

Venus is the Lord of Taurus and Libra. All the planets except the Sun and the Moon are her friends.
Mercury is the lord of Gemini and Virgo. All save the sun, are his friends.
The moon is the Lord of Cancer. Mercury and Jupiter are her friends.
The Sun is the Lord of Leo. Jupiter is his only friend.
Jupiter is the Lord of Sagittarius and Pisces. All except Mars are his friends.

1. Vasya: Leo and Scorpio are concordant to Aries; Cancer and Leo are concordant to Taurus; Virgo, to Gemini;
Scorpio and Sagittarius, to Cancer; Libra, to Leo; Gemini and Pisces, to Virgo; Capricorn, to Libra; Virgo and
Cancer, to Scorpio; Pisces, to Sagittarius; Aquarius and Aries, to Capricorn; Aries, to Aquarius; Capricorn to
Pisces. The Janma-Rasi (the sign occupied by moon at birth) of the bridegroom should be concordant to that
of the bride, or vice versa in which case there will be harmony between the couple.
1.

Rajju: There are five divisions of asterisms under this head:

Pada Rajju Aswini, Aslesha, Magha, Jyeshta, Mula and Revati

Ooroo Rajju Bharani, Pushya, Purvaphalguni, Anuradha, Purvashadha, and Uttarabhadrapada.

Nabhi Rajju Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttaraphalguni, Visakha, Uttarashadha and Purvabhadrapada.

Kanta Rajju Rohini, Ardra, Hasta, Swati, Sravana, and Satabisha.

Siro Rajju Mrigasirsha, Chitra, and Sravishta. If the asterisms of the couple come under Padha Rajju, they
will travel to foreign countries; Ooroo Rajju causes loss of property; Nabhi Rajju shows loss of offspring;
Kanta Rajju signifies the death of the woman; Siro Rajju, the death of the man. Therefore, the asterisms of
the couple should not be in the same division. Thus the sages interpret Rajju.

10. Vedha: The following sets of asterisms are mutually repellent. There should be no marriage between a man
and a woman, whose asterisms are found in the same set: Aswini and Jyeshta, Bharani and Anuradha, Krittika and
Visakha, Rohini and Swati, Ardra and Sravana, Punarvasu and Uttarashadha, Pushya and Purvashadha, Aslesha and
Mula, Magha and Revati, Purvaphalguni and Uttarabhadrapada, Uttaraphalguni and Purvabhadrapada, Hasta and
Satabisha, Mrigasirsha, Citra and Sravashta.
Exception: Rajju, Vedhai, Ganam, and Rasi the adverse effects arising from these need not be considered, if 1. The
lords of Janma-Rasis of the man and the woman be the same, 2. They be friendly planets and 3. If their Janma-Rasis
be diametrically opposite signs of the zodiac.
Dhina, Gana, Yoni, Rasi, and Rajju, are the five chief points in which there should be agreement in the horoscopes of
the bridegroom and bride. Of these, Dhina and Rajju are first in importance. Dhina is particularly so to Brahmanas;
Gana to Kshatriyas; Rasi to Vaisyas; and Yoni to Sudras.
Agreement in respect of Dhina, Gana, etc, Dhina gives good luck; Gana brings wealth; Mahendhra develops
attachment. Stri-Dirgam promotes welfare; Yoni gives birth to many sons; Rasi shows growth of family; Rasyadhipati
indicates prosperity in corn; Vasya favours development of posterity; Rajju inclines to felicity in married life and
immunity from widowhood; Vedha gives many sons.
Of these ten Considerations, to determine suitability, the horoscopes of the man and woman must agree in
respect of at least five. If that be not so, one must be guided by omen (shakuna) in the matter of judging the
suitability or otherwise of a proposed marriage.
Female asterisms: Bharani, Ardra, Aslesha, Magha, Purvaphalguni, Uttaraphalguni, Chitra, Swati, Visakha,
Jyeshta, Purvashadha, Uttarashadha, Sravana and Sravishta.
Hermaphrodite Asterisms: Mrigasirsha, Satabhisha, and Mula.
Male Asterisms: Aswini, Krittika, Rohini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Purvabhadrapada,
Uttarabhadrapada, and Revati.
It is excellent if the asterisms of the man and the woman be respectively male and female. If it be otherwise it will
produce no good. If the asterisms of the man and the woman be hermaphrodite and female, hermaphrodite and
male, both male or both female, the influence will be of middling nature.
Nakshatra Gotra: Divide the 28 asterisms, including Abhijit, into seven sets of four each. The 1 st set represents
the Gotra of Mareechi; the 2nd represents Vasishta Gotra, the 3rd set is Angiras Gotra; the 4th is Atri Gotra; the 5th is
the Gotra of Sage Pulastya; the 6th is that of sage Pulaha; the 7th is Gruta Gotra.
The Gotras of the man and woman should be different. If it be the same, it will produce evil.
The castes of the signs: Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio belong to Brahma caste; Libra, Leo and Sagittarius are of
Kshatriya caste; Aries, Gemini and Aquarius are of Vaishya caste; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are of Shudra caste.
There should be no marriage of a man of lower caste and a woman of a higher.
Will there be marriage? If, at the time of this horary question, the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, or 11th house, from the rising
sign, be occupied by the moon and aspected by Jupiter, marriage may be predicted.
Shall I find a bride? If at the time of this question Libra, Taurus or Cancer be the rising sign, occupied or aspected
by any benefic planet, the answer should be in the affirmative. If at the time of the query waning Moon occupies an
even sign, from the rising sign with the 8th house aspected by malefics should be in the negative.

How long will the couple live? If at the time of such query about a marriage, the 5th, 6th, or 8th house from the
rising sign be occupied by the moon, the predication should be that the couple (if marriage, in question, should take
place) will die in 8 years. If the rising sign be occupied by Mars, with a benefic in the 7 th house at the time of query,
the woman will turn out a bad character, or her children will pass away and her husband (if the marriage, in
question, should take place) will die in eight years.
If, at the time of enquiry, the Moon occupies the rising sign, with Mars in the 7 th house, the death of the husband (if
married) after the 8th year should be predicted.
If the 5th house from the rising sign, at the time of enquiry, be occupied by a malefic, in debilitation, aspected by
inimical planets, the woman (if married) will either lose her sons or will be immoral.
Excerpt from Kalaprakasika (Chapter XIII) translated by N.P. Subramania Iyer, page 68-78
Celebration of Marriage
Chapter XIV: Choosing the Date to Celebrate Marriage
This is an excerpt on determining the best astrological time to celebrate marriage from a mid-evil Indian text called
Kalaprakasika translated by N.P. Subramania Iyer. This is used in a branch of Astrology called electional astrology
(muhurta) to choose a time when events will be the most successful.
The rules for fixing the time for celebrating a marriage are given in this chapter.
Uttarayana (the first half of the year when the Sun is in the northern circle between Capricorn and Gemini) is
excellent; Dakshinayana (the second half when the Sun is in the southern circle between Cancer and Capricorn) is
of middling quality.
If, in the figure of the heavens (Gochaaram) at the time of marriage, Jupiter occupies the Janma-Rasi (the house of
the moon at birth) the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th house, therefrom, the bride will either die or become a widow.
The marriage should be celebrated in the 5th, 6th, or 7th year of the bride when Jupiter is well-placed in a benefic
sign.
The best nakshatra (as they favour the birth of sons): Rohini, Mrigasirsha, Magha, Uttaraphalguni, Hasta, Swati,
Anuradha, Mula, Uttarashadha, Uttarabhadrapada, and Revati. Urdhva-Mukha asterisms are the most fruitful, AtoMukha asterisms cause harm and Tiryag Mukha) asterisms breed fever. Other asterisms affect the life of the son.
The best tithis are Dvitiya, Trtiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dasami, Ekadasi, and Trayodasi. Pratama (of the dark
fortnight) Shashti, Ashtami, Dwadasi, Purnama (Full-moon) are middling. All the tithis after ashtami of Krishna
paksha (dark fortnight) are inauspicious and will affect life.
The best signs are Gemini, Virgo and Libra. Aries, Capricorn, Scorpio and Pisces should be avoided. The other
signs exercise middling influence.
The best days are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and the amsas and associations etc., of the Moon,
Mercury, Jupiter or Venus. Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday, and the amsas and associations of Saturn, the Sun, and
Mars should be avoided.
Zodiacal [rising] signs at the time of marriage: If the rising sign, at the time of marriage, be Aries, the bride
will become a prostitute; if it be Taurus, she will become poor; Gemini gives her good qualities; Cancer inclines to
adultery; Leo bids her confine to her fathers house; Libra favours her single-hearted devotion to husband; Scorpio
produces grief; the 1st half of Sagittarius makes her a whore; the 2nd half develops chastity; Capricorn, Aquarius or
Pisces tend to adultery.
Combustion of helical rising of Venus and Jupiter:
Marriage within a week after the reappearance (udayam) of Venus, affects the life of the bride adversely; Marriage,
just prior to her becoming Ashtangata (combust) affects the life of the bridegroom.
Marriage within 8 days after the reappearance of Jupiter adversely affects the life of the bridegroom. Marriage
within 15 days prior to ashtangata harms the bride.

Planets in the Houses:

Influence of Planets in the Rising Sign at the time of Marriage: The sun causes widowhood; the Moon shows danger
to the life of the bride; Mars affects the life of both; Mercury brings widespread fame; Jupiter and Venus prolong life;
Saturn creates poverty; Rahu or Ketu is an impediment to birth of children.
Planets in the 2nd house: Malefics in the 2nd house produce misery; the Moon in the 2nd house generates children;
Mercury and Jupiter bestow enormous pecuniary gain; Venus favours the bride with a life of felicity and prevents
widowhood.
Planets in the 3rd house: Planets in the 3rd house give happiness and fortune, as a rule.
Planets in the 4th house: The Sun causes adversity; the Moon tends to separation; Mars gives poverty; Mercury
favours a life of felicity; Jupiter shows prosperous life and freedom from widowhood; Venus makes the woman
chaste; Saturn brings adverse circumstances; Rahu and Ketu lead the woman into bad character so says Sage
Garga.
Planets in the 5th house: The 5th house be occupied by a benefic, the couple will have many sons; the Sun and Mars
affect the lives of the children; Saturn and Rahu cause leprosy.
Planets in the 6th house: The moon causes widowhood; Mercury helps the couple to dwell together, always; Rahu
produces poverty; other planets give many sons.
Planets in the 7th house: There should be no planets in the 7 th house. If there be, the adverse effects are as follow:
Jupiter makes the woman disrespectful to her husband; Mercury breeds indifference to religious formalities; Venus
shows bad conduct; Mars indicates adultery on the part of the woman; Saturn affects the life of the children; Ketu
gives the woman the disposition of a maniac; the Sun hastens widowhood; Rahu causes poverty; the Moon brings
all miseries. For these reasons the 7th house from the rising sign, at the time of marriage, should be vacant.
Planets in the 8th house: Saturn, the Sun and Mars in the 8th house cause good; other planets produce adverse
effects.
Planets in the 9th house: All planets in the 9th house except Rahu, Mars and Saturn tend to gratify all desires.
Planets in the 10th house: Mars causes death; the Sun leads to consumption; Saturn shows debauchery; Rahu gives
widowhood; other planets are benevolent.
Planets in the 11th house: These bestow all the desired advantages on both.
Planets in the 12th house: Venus, Jupiter and Mercury are fortunate planets; other planets deter by intimidation.
Q. : Can the future be made happy by matching horoscopes?
Ans. : future can certainly be made happy by matching horoscopes. Destiny can be changed by actions. Fate is the
result of previous birth's actions, or we may say that by matching horoscopes properly, future can be improved.
Q. If the horoscope spells doom for the native, how can the future be improved with the help of
horoscope matching ?
Ans. : Vedas have directed that every individual should make efforts to improve his, or her future. Every work
should be done at an auspicious moment by considering the Muhurta, or adopting remedies to propitiate the
planets is also a step towards this end. Similarly, married life can also be made happy by matching horoscopes. If a
horoscope shows ill effects, then a powerful horoscope can render it's supports to it.
Q. : To what extent is horoscope matching a parameter of happy married life? If many 'Gunas' match
and there is no Manglik Dosha, will the married life of a couple be definitely a happy one?
Ans. : Possibility of a happy married life increases manyfolds, if the horoscopes match with each other.
Nevertheless, there is no guarantee for it.
Q. : If the horoscopes do not match with each other, can the marriage be still performed?

Ans. : If the horoscopes do not match, but other planetary combinations are favourable, marriage can be
considered. If very few Gunas match, like less than twelve, then it is better to reject the match for lack of Gunas.
Q.: If less than eighteen Gunas, like sixteen or seventeen, match, will it be proper to perform the
marriage according to horoscope matching?
Ans. : If fifty percent Gunas match, it is considered to be a good match. If only sixteen, or seventeen Gunas match,
it does indicate that matching is shifting from good to bad. Findings of a research show that marks given to a
happily married couple and marks given to a divorced couple have a difference of only two to three points. Thus
matching of all the thirty six Gunas is not the parameter of an ideal matching and matching of less than eighteen
Gunas can not be taken as the criteria of bad matching. If the position and aspects of the planets are correct, then
matching of up to 15 Gunas can also be taken as right matching.
Q.: If Nadi Dosha is there in the horoscope and yet more than 18 Gunas match, then will it be proper
to perform a marriage?
Ans. : If more than 18 Gunas match in horoscope matching, then it is not necessary to consider any other
favourable, or adverse condition Nadi Dosha is harmful for the progeny, but if eighteen Gunas match, no thought
should be given to it.
Q.: What is the outcome of a marriage with Bhakoot Dosha?
Ans. : There is difference of opinion between husband and wife, due to Bhakoot Dosha. But if the lords of their
planets are friends, then this adversity becomes less.
Q. : If the bride, or the groom is Manglik, is it necessary for the other one also to be a Manglik?
Ans. : It is not necessary that both of them are Manglik. Planetary position in one's own, or life partner's horoscope,
Manglik Dosha.
Q.: Besides the ascendant, should Manglik Dosha be considered from Moon, or Venus also.
Ans. : It is meaningless to consider Manglik Dosha from Venus. If considered from Moon, results are much less.
Manglik Dosha should be considered from the ascendant only.
Q.: Does Mars 'influence remains after the age of twenty eight also, or it lessens with time?
Ans. : It is incorrect to believe that Mars influence vanishes after twenty eight years. Manglik Dosha remains
forever, but it's influence can be lessened by worship.
Q. : Is wearing coral necessary to get rid of Manglik Dosha, or fasting for Mars, or worshipping it can
be alternative remedies?
Ans. : To get rid of Manglik Dosha, wearing a coral is not always the remedy. If Mars is debilitated and is benefic for
the horoscope, then it is possible to get rid of Manglik Dosha by wearing a coral, otherwise chanting Hanuman
Chalisa and fasting on Tuesday are the best remedies.
Q. : If the girl is strongly Manglik, can it influence the life span of the groom?
Ans.: Life span is linked with one's own destiny. But company does have it's influence and it is not correct to
perform marriage between a strong Manglik girl and an ordinary boy.
Q. : Besides Mars, how much influence do the other planets have on horoscope matching?
Ans. : According to the researches done on this subject during modern times, other planets have more influence
than Manglik Dosha and Guna matching.
Q.: Various Panchangs give different marks to the same Koot. Why does this happen and which should
be taken as authentic?

Ans.: Often there are differences in the calculations and beliefs in astrology. Same differences remain in the
matching tables. These differences are found while considering Gana, yoni and Bhakoot. But besides Bhakoot
Dosha this difference is limited to half, or one mark only. If friendly planets are posited in Bhakoot Dosha, then,
according to some sages, full marks are given and others do not give any marks. This way there comes a difference
of upto seven marks.
Q.: Is it necessary to match the horoscopes if it is a love marriage, or an intercaste one?
Ans. : Results of matching are the same in love marriage, or intercaste marriage. Matching is above religion or love
of the native.
Q. : What are the methods followed, while matching horoscopes?
Ans. : In India mostly two methods are followed - North Indian and South Indian . In North India thirty six Gunas are
matched, whereas in South India only ten Koots are considered.
Q. : Can the horoscope matching done by a computer be relied upon?
Ans.: Matching done by a computer, specially Leo Gold Astrological Software, is more accurate than the matching
done by hand. If computer rejects a matching and marriage is mandatory, horoscopes should be shown to some
knowledgeable scholar and then the marriage should be performed.
Marriage Matching : Essential or Not
The marriages are made in heaven. It means the marriage has divine approval and blessings. Still one needs to look
for the right mate, only then he can find the true life partner. Male and female are nothing but two aspects or two
sides of nature. Hence it is natural for them to be united into a holy wedlock. In our country the marriage has been
considered as a relationship which will last till eternity. It confers equality on both the partners in matters of
DHARMA [ Right conduct], ARTHA [Financial position], KAMA [Sex relation] and MOKSHA [Liberation or
emancipation]
The family is the fundamental unit of the society. This unit is facing great danger today. More or less it is in a state
of disintegration with more broken families everywhere. Reason for this sad state of affairs can be traced to the
increasing fragility of marriages around the country.
Divorce, separation and single parenting are main problems in the society, which have damaged the happiness of
young couples. Stable married life can be achieved through proper analysis of horoscopes of bride and groom
before the marriage. This practice is in existence even today in most of the traditional families in our country.
Matching of charts for marriage is not an easy job. It requires many years of practical experience as well as a good
understanding of the theoretical aspects of the Astrology. Many a time horoscope matching is entrusted to the
family priest or a friend, who on the basis of Koota agreement [ Gunank Matching ] which is found in every
panchang, either endorses or rejects the match outright. Such a snapshot approach to the intricacies of horoscope
matching many times leads to disastrous results or brings a bad name to astrology.
In cases of marital disasters occurring in spite of matching the charts ( invariably done by those ill equipped to do
it) this writer found that the reasons for the mishap were inherent in the charts themselves, and had been simply
overlooked and not handled properly by the person who had done such matching.
Marriages are sometimes finalised without matching of charts. This is because of the wide ignorance amongst
parents about importance of matching of charts and its role in post marital dangers are realised late. Sometimes
matching is overlooked due to a strong prejudice against astrology . But both situations can be remedied by an
open mind and diligent study of astrology.
A marriage is not an invitation for brute sense of gratification nor it is a civil agreement that affects only the
partners, but also the parents, society and the country as it is the base for creating a healthy future generation.
To strengthen my above views, I am presenting 10 sets of horoscopes of couples where the marital happiness
miserably failed in spite of the best Gunank obtained in the matching. Study of individual cases will reveal the truth
about matching of horoscopes.
Gunanka obtained : 30

Note : This couple completed their eight years of married life but were childless because of male impotence.
Referring to above horoscope, we find that Gunanka obtained is 30, which is considered the best matching and the

These ten sets of horoscope of couples were analysed with the help of traditional astrological Yogas to find out the
disturbances in married life. With the facts explained above it is understood that Gunanka matching is not the main
concept in marriage matching and Bhava Melapak (Matching of Houses) is more important than gunanka
matching.

In our country we are experiencing more and more marriage failures in recent years, due to one or the other
reasons explained as above. If a proper matching could have been done in consultation of various Bhavas, to
accertain the longevity, progeny, love and affection, conjugal happiness, adultery etc. the marriage would definitely
have lasted long, whether the gunanka matching is in order or not. Out of my experience, I would like to emphasize
that importance should be given to the points given in table while scrutinizing male and female horoscope for
marriage.
If the above points are found satisfactorily in both the cases, the marriage can be happily recommended whether
gunank matching is in order or not.
Before concluding, I would like to give the following important points which are the key factors for a happy married
life.
1. If mars of the female horoscope occupies the sign of Venus in the male horoscope or vice versa. gives good
physical attraction to both the partners.
2. If mars and Venus occupy same house in male and female horoscope there will be better physical attraction
between the partners and both will enjoy good conjugal happiness.
3. In the male or female horoscope lord of ascendent posited in a kendra and aspected by benefics will give good
marital happiness.
4. If there is exchange of houses between the lord of 5th and 7th or if there is close conjunction of lord of 5th and
7th the native will get a very good affectionate and lovable life partner.
5. Lord of 7th occupying its own house and aspected by benefics will lead to a good married life.
6. If lords of 5th, 7th, and 9th are occupying a kendra, the married life will be good.
7. The longitude of the sun in the male horoscope equal to the longitude of moon in the female horoscope will lead
to good marital happiness.
8. Longitude of the Venus in the male horoscope equal to the longitude of the Venus of the female horoscope leads
to good marital happiness.
If the above facts are taken into consideration the disasters in the married life can be ruled out.
