NECESITA... and Rowing Club, organize this trip
every summer. Once the event was
announced late last winter. about 35
kayakers had signed upfor the trip by
the fourth day. Blackstone said one
third of participants were members
from the Yonkers Club, but several
were from out of state. Kayakers from
Florida, Chicago, and Washington,
D.C., who heard about the event by
word of mouth, would also paddle the
29 miles around the island.
Last year the flotilla launched
from Pier 96 on 56th Street. but this
year organizers decided to start from
Inwood after they studied the tides
and wanted to take advantage of the
current. There, kayakers were able
to set out from two launching points:
the Parks Department beach north of
the now-closed marina or the Inwood
Canoe Club'sfloating dock two blocks
south of the marina. Out-of-towners
were able to drop off their boats at the
club the day before the trip.
Joe Wojak. a member of the Inwood
Canoe Club for the last three years,
was on hand Friday afternoon to
help kayakers store their boats for
the night. He said only two people
from his club would be making the
Saturday morning trip, this being his
second time. "I just want to see what
this many kayaks on the water looks
like," he said. "I've been in smaller
groups like 12 or 15, but if this is
going to be like 40 or 60 people. 1
want to see that. "
Wojak has made the trip around
Manhattan before and said it was
doable if you go at a slow pace and
pay attention to the tides. "If you time
it with the river and the tides it's not

a real struggle," he said. "That's the
real key. to let the river help you do
the work for you. "

breaths and not wear out, several rest
stops were scheduled throughout the
trip to give them a chance to cool off,
stretch, and see the sights. An artist
even gave the group a tour through
the Socrates Sculpture Park during
a stop at Hallet's Cove in Astoria,
Queens where kayakers took pictures
with him in front of his sculptures.
The circumnavigation was free and
participants were only responsible for
the cost of traveling into the city and
providing their own food and gear.
Along with plenty of water, kayakers
were asked to bring a marine radio
for communication throughout the
trip, personal flotation devices. and
protection from the sun.
"It was hotter than we thought."
said Blumling. "We were passing
by Yank~e Stadium and it said 93
degrees,
The group traveled faster than
anticipated and was able to make
more rest stops than were originally
scheduled to give paddlers a chance
to hydrate. "I went in the water to
cool off because I felt a little hot
coming up the East River. It was
definitely hotter than I imagined it
to be," said Blumling. Other than
the high temperatures, the trip went
smoothly, with enough wind to cool
off, but not enough to make the water
choppy. There were also no mishaps.
other than a few sluggish paddlers
who were able to keep up after a 20-
minute rest.
The group ended up with 42
participants - seven more than last
year - and all returned to the starting
point in Inwood, said Blumling. The
event keeps growing as word travels
about the trip, which in turn demands
more safety precautions. Seven
experienced kayaker.., instead of last
year's three, served as guides.
With such a large group making
its way through the waters. the Coast
Guard and the city's Parks Department
were stationed at key points
throughout the /Tip. A safety power
boat followed behind the flotilla and
a ground support car made the route
as well to pick up any paddlers who
were unable to finish the trip. "We
didn't have to pull anybody out of the
water, nobody got sick or anything,
everybody finished," Blumling said.
