thermally.Asingletypepipeexpansionjointisusedwithintermediatepipeguides.
Goodpracticedictatesthatthepipeexpansionjointbelocatedascloseaspossibleto
oneoftheanchors,inthiscaseadjacenttotheelbow.Thefirstguideshouldbe
locatedascloseaspossibletothepipeexpansionjoint,sothatthedeflectionis
limitedtotheexpectedaxialdirection.Thesecondguideislocatedrelativelycloseto
thefirsttopreventanybowingofthepipe,andagaintoensurethattheendofthepipe
atthepipeexpansionjointattachmentmovesinonlytheexpectedaxialdirection.The
spacingoftheremainingguidesshouldfollowtherecommendationsoftheEJMA
standards,whicharecontainedinthisdesignmanual.

oftwodifferentdiameters.Sincethepressurethrustonthemainanchorsisafunction
ofthepressuretimesthecrosssectionalareaofthepipeexpansionjoints,ifonlyone

thrustwouldexistinthepipewallasacompressionforce,tendingtobuckleorbowthe

section.Inthiscase,thepipeexpansionjointsarelocatedoneithersideofthe
reducer,whichsatisfiestheneedtolocatethemnearananchor.Therulesforpipe

shownaboveutilizestheExample2arrangementforthemainpipesectionhowever,
insteadofanintermediateanchor,amainanchorshouldbeusedatthetee.Thismain
anchorresiststhepressurethrustofthebranchline.Inthedirectionofthemainline
theanchormustresistanydynamicpressurethrustimbalanceresultingfromthe
changingflowconditionscausedbythebranchline.Again,allthepipeexpansion

forcesofthepipeexpansionjointwhenitdeflects.Withpressurebalancedpipe

withinthepipeandexpansionjoint.Asaresult,theextensiveguidingprovidedforthe
