Any who would like to assist a congregation in the coverage of its territory or work unassigned territory
should review the Society's letter dated January 1, 1988, on this subject.
Please keep in mind that, if at all possible, you should be willing to work

from either the east coast or the west
coast of the United States.
9 We have every reason to put our
hand to the plow of increased activity
and look to the things ahead. (Luke
9:62) Remember, we do not know
from where further increase will
come. (Eccl. 11:6) Therefore, like
Philip, let us place ourselves as willing instruments in the hands of Jehovah and his organization, prepared to
sow Kingdom seed wherever it is necessary before the end comes.-Acts

10 Since our primary purpose for attending the
convention is to receive spiritual direction and encouragement, plan to arrive early enough to take
care of matters that need attention, such as obtaining
convention food tickets, and then be seated before the
program begins. Doing this will leave you relaxed,
with your mind uncluttered with concern over matters not directly related to the program.
l1 Be sure to get a good night's sleep each night so
that you will be refreshed in the morning and can
fully concentrate on the program during the day.

to renew friendships and to enjoy pleasant association, if we stay up late into the night visiting with

some have brought large coolers or other bulky items
that could not be placed under their seat. These have
been placed in aisleways or on seats. We need to show
consideration in such matters, since this has resulted
in depriving brothers and interested persons of a seat
and, in most instances, has violated fire and safety
codes.

14Those planning to be baptized at one of the
district conventions should be sure to inform the
presiding overseer well in advance of the convention
so that there will be plenty of time to review the
questions in the Our Ministry book. A modest bathing
suit and a towel should be brought by each one who
plans to be baptized.-see OUTKingdom Ministry,
May 1987, page 3, paragraph 6.
l5 Baptismal candidates should endeavor to be in
their seats in the designated section before the program begins on Saturday morning. After the baptism
talk and prayer by the speaker, the session chairman
will give brief instructions to baptismal candidates
and then call for a song. All will stand during the
singing of the song. Before the last verse has been
sung, the attendants will direct the baptismal candidates to the hImer~i0nsite Or to vehicles that will
take them there, while the rest of the audience completes singing the song.
l6TAKE NOTES: Besides your Bible and songbook,
remember to bring a notepad and pen or pencil. We
may not be in the habit of taking notes during weekly
congregation meetings because most of the talks and
demonstrations are taken from material that is available to all in the congregation. However, listening to
the information presented at the district convention
is an entirely different matter. While some of the
will in time appear in the publications, others
will not. Even if a l l the talks were to appear in print,
there are still significant benefits to be derived from
taking brief, meaningful notesl7For one thing, taking notes serves as an aid to
concentration. Isolate the speaker's key points and
key scriptures Or new thoughts that may be presented. Then make brief notes of these. Usually a sentence or two will sufficefor a key point. By following

Then why not arrange for them also to take
notes in accord with their age and ability? Let the
family know that you plan to review some of the main
points brought out by the speakers when you return
to your place of lodging or while you are traveling
home. Younger children can be encouraged to write
down all the scripture citations or note how many
times they hear a speaker refer to key words or the
theme of the talk. By doing this, they will get much
from the talks. It is good for children to learn

26 All attending the convention will find the food
available to be satisfactory and nourishing, giving
good variety for four days. Great care has been taken
to buy food of the highest quality. Your fullv utiliziu
the provisions available through the Food Service
Department will support the convention operation.
27 VOLUNTEER SERVICE: The em~hasis
on sim~lification is particularly noted in connection with the
man-hours needed to organize and operate a district
convention. Those who have been in the truth many
years will recall that previously, before and during
large conventions, tens of thousands of volunteers
were needed, devoting many h o w of their time in
various convention departments. That labor of love
was deeply appreciated, but it often caused many of
the volunteerss-t
a great deal of the program.
28 While fewer volunteers and fewer hours are now
required to do the work, volunteer help is still needed
for the smooth operation of a district convention. Can
you have a share? No one should feel that volunteering will mean missinv most of the program as some
have experienced in the past.
2%en you arrive at the convention site, check
with the Volunteer Service Department. Even if you
may be able to w o r k a art of the convention,
your services will be appreciated. You will find it
yiritually rewarding to work at the convention. Chidren under 16years of age can also contribute to the
success of the convention, but they are required to

30 RECORDINGS: It seems timely to clarify the
Society's position on the use of video c a , sas well
as audio eauipmept. A consisteht

for all meetinqs-district conventions, circuit assembli& special assembly days, and in Kingdom Halls.
While there is no prohibition on the use of such
equipment, it seems there

and limitations. Attendants should be alert that those who
use video cameras and audio recorders do not d i s t m
others or d m t attention from the program in
progress. Brothers using such equipment should%o ~ e r a t ewith the atte-and
elders having oversight and not be pleasing themselves. Such equipment should not be set up in aisles or exits. No such
equipment should be connected to the public address
system or electrical outlets, nor will floodlights be
permitted. In some cases, such equipme-set
up where it will not disturb the audience, such as in
the back of halls.
31 CONCLUSION: There are good reasons why we
want to be at the "Divine Justice" District Convention where we can worship Jehovah with thouserving only cold food items along with hot and cold sands of our brothers. Also, conventions are spiritual
beverages. This enables more of our brothers and feasts that strengthen our faith and deepen our
sisters who work in food preparation to join us in the appreciation for the truth. The prophet Isaiab

When assigned to a sister, the material should be presented as outlined for Talk No. 3.
COUNSEL AND REMARKS: After each student talk,
the school overseer will give specific counsel, not necessarily following the program of progressive counsel outlined on the Speech Counsel slip. Rather, he should
concentrate on those areas where the student needs to
improve. If the student speaker merits solely a "Gn and
there is no other speech quality marked "In or W." then
the counselor should circle the box, where the "G," "I," or
W" would normally appear, of the speech quality that the
student should work on next. He w i l l advise the student
of this that evening as
as show this speech
on
the student,s next Theocratic Ministry School Assignment slip (S.89) Those giving talks should sit toward the
front of the hall; This will save time and enable the school
overseer to give his
directly to each student. As
time allows after the giving of necessary oral counsel,
comments may be given by the counselor on informative
and practical points not covered by the students. The
school overseer should be careful to use no more than a
total of two minutes for counsel and remarks after each
student talk. If the Bible highlights presentation left
something to be desired, private counsel may be given.
PREPARING TALKS: ~

No. 1should select a theme where needed. Students assigned the second talk should choose a theme that will
allow for the best coverage of the material. Students
assigned the third and fourth talks should use the theme
shown. Prior to giving the talk, students will want to read
over the School Guidebook material dealing with the
speech quality being worked on.
TIMING: NO talk should go overtime. Neither should

through 4 should tactfully be stopped when the t i e is up.
The one assigned to give the "stop signal" should do so
promptly. When brothers handling Assignment No. 1go
overtime, they should be given private counsel. All should
watch their timing ~arefully.Total program: 45 minutes,
excluding song and PrayerWRITTEN REVIEW: P e r i d c a y a written review will
be given. In preparation, review the assigned material and
complete the scheduled Bible reading. Only the Bible may
be used during this 25-minute review. The balance of the
time will be devoted to a discussion of the suestions and
answers. Each student will check his own paper. The
school overseer will read off all answers and concentrate
on the more difacult questions, helping all to understand
the answers clearly. If, for some reason, local circumstances make it necessary, the written review may be used
a week later than what is shown on the schedule.
LARGE AND SCONGREGATIONS: Congregations with a school enrollment of 50 or more students may
wish to arrange for additional groups of students to deliver the scheduled talks before other counselors. Of course,
unbaptized persons whose lives conform to Christian principles may also enroll in the school and receive assignments.
ABSENTEES: All in the congregation can show appreciation for this school by endeavoring to be present at
every weekly session, by preparing their assignments
well, and by participating in question sessions. It is hoped
that all students win view their assignments cmscientiously. I f a student is not present when scheduled, a
volunteer may take the assignment, making whatever
applicationhe feels qualified to make on such short notice.
Or the school overseer may cover the material with appropriate audience participation.

BEING BALANCED
If a student is not making meaningful progress after you have patiently aided him over a reasonable
period of time, it may be best to use
the time to better advantage searching for deserving ones. (Matt. 10:
11-13) Depending on the &cumstances, it may be wise to discontinue
the study. Genuinely commend the
householder for the progress made.
Point out, however, that as Bible
truths are learned they should be applied. Using Jesus' parable of the
sower, you might discuss each of the
four kinds of soil referred to and then
show how this illustration empharizes the need to respond positively to
the Kingdom message. This may help
the student to realize what has held
him back from making steady progress. You may have opportunity to
comment on what you have observed.
Be kind, but straightforward and
clear. (1Cor. 14:8, 9) Let him know
that the study might be resumed
when the needed adjustments have
been made. In the meantime, you will
be calling periodically to encourage
him.-See KiwdomMi%istrg,February 1970, page 4.

Relying on Jehovah in a e r , as
many examples highlight, will enable us to receive the help of the
holy spirit, thus strengthening us to
speak with boldness and tact.-Acts
5:29.
When locating people in the territory who have studied before, it is
wise to flnd out how long they studied
and with whom. Why did they stop?
If the one who previously conducted
the study is known, it would be good
to discuss the matter with him and
theserviceoverseerbeforeresuming
the study. Likely there are factors
about whlch you are not aware. Some
persons have studied with many different publishers over the years
without ever making any real progress. We need to spend time with
those who show a genuine interest in
the truth.
Whether terminating a Bible
study or resuming one previously
stopped, you may wish to discuss
with the householder the flne material appearing in the article "There Is
Still Time to Tvrn to Jehovah'" on
pages 220-2 of the April 1,1976, issue
of llhs Watchtower. As we sharpen
our abilities in conducting progressive Bible studies, countless others
may yet be aided to learn, accept, and
practice the truth. This can result in
their obtaining an approved relationship with Jehovah God and, ultiiately, everlasting life.-Phil. 4:9; John

the availability of such funds before requesting help. (Luke 14:28-30) Surveys indicate

There are various reasons why some congregations are eager to build new Kingdom
Halls. Although some early Kingdom Halls
may have been built initially in 6ne neighborhoods and a t the time were of sufficient size to
care for the needs of the congregations, circumstances have changed, and we have experienced wonderful growth. Some congregations have simply outgrown their present
hall. The meetings are overcrowded, and a t
times the attendance may exceed legal limits. Usually these halls also have insufficient
parking space.
l4 Many c~ngregationsstill meet in rented
buildings, such as community centers. The
meeting schedule is subject to change, or use
of the facility may be cancelled a t the discretion of the management. This may occur because of conflicting schedules, civic events,
and so forth. In these instances, all the equipment and seating is makeshift, requiring setting up for each meeting and dismantling
afterward. Sometimes these places are decorated inside and outside according to the
worldly holiday season. Often rented facilities
are in downtown areas where parking is limited. This has caused m c u l t i e s and tense
situations with neighbors. Also, the cornrnunit y may view the congregation as lacking permanency, and this hinders growth. Some of
these facilities are upstairs, making access
difficult, and at times dangerous, for older or
infirm persons.
Some Kingdom Halls are located far from
any population center. Attending meetings
requires extra travel time and expense for the
publishers and interested ones. Such halls

may now be in neighborhoods that have deteriorated. At times in such neighborhoods.

BIBLE READING
Are we
benefiting

us apply t h e examples in the narratives. Have we tried doing our weekly Bible reading while listening t o
the Society's Bible tapes? BY thus
utilizing the senses of seeing and

Jehovah has made abundant spiritual provision t o assist u s in our
vital preaching work. At Psalm 19:

you, 0 Jehovah my Rock and my
Redeemer." If, as in David's case,
love for Jehovah and his Son wells
