What is Power Wall all about?

Is this the missing link required to move from coal to solar?

Let us understand Power Walls specifications

System Design and Integration

TESLA POWERWALL
Battery pack in two variations (7
kWh and 10 kWh)
Integrated battery management
system, cooling system and smart
usage monitoring system

Energy Storage Landscape 2015

Energy Storage Technologies Performance

ENERGY STORAGE performance
metrics:
Capital cost ($/kWh)
Cycle life
Roundtrip Energy Efficiency
Space footprint
C-rate (duration)
Usable SOC range

Lead Acid batteries are work

horse for the industrial and
residential backup and provide
lower capital cost solutions ,
while Li-Ion & Flow batteries
are emerging as solutions for
applications requiring higher
cycle life.

Capital Cost Trend

IESA predicted that Li-Ion price will fall over the time. But Teslas Powerwalls price ($350/kWh)
already beat our expected price.

Energy Storage Scale of Manufacturing

LEAD ACID battery leads the

energy storage market in
production and sales
LITHIUM ION batteries are
currently being manufactured
in the GW scale (portable,
transportation and grid
storage)
FLOW BATTERIES are currently
being manufactured on a MW
scale. Production is likely to
scale up significantly in the
next 5 years

Energy storage technologies are

in early stages of achieving
economies of scale. As the costs
come down, markets will expand,
thus providing more
opportunities to scale up.

MICROGRID MARKET IN INDIA

Villages in India
As stated in Office Memorandum subject DDUGJY (2014), there were around 1,001,506 villages
over 100 population and 74,157 villages or inhabitations with less than 100 population on 31st of
Dec, 2012.

Most of the villages accounted

in census will be electrified
through grid supply. However,
the rural India witness power
outages over 10 hours in many
parts of India. Such villages
are already relying on DG sets
and lead acid battery back-up.
It is estimated that over
2,00,000 habitations will be
electrified by off-grid solutions
and over 20% of these
habitations might be electrified
with micro-grids.

Rural Electrification and Microgrid (continued)

Most of the off-grid electrification projects are not micro-grids. They are individual household
electrification through solar PV where provision for only lighting is made. Although they are the
preferred choice, they do not meet the criteria of rural electrification.

It is observed that over 90% of electrification of villages or

inhabitations have been done through grid expansion under RGGVY
(now DDUGY). And the rest of the villages or inhabitations have been
electrified through off-grid solutions.
Microgrid is practically the best option to electrified a rural
inhabitation of under 100 households or a village or inhabitation
located in a remote locality where physically it is almost impossible to
take the grid supply. However, due to various challenges in
maintaining of microgrids, individual household electrification through
solar panels of under 40 W are deployed over each households with
couple of under 2W LEDs and a mobile charger.

India: Fast growing market for off grid systems

According to a recent survey
by USAID / CEEW, there are
currently over 250 companies
working on providing off grid
solutions to consumers in
India.

ESS Opportunity for Rural Electrification:

Microgrids
VRLA maintenance free battery likely to penetrate DC and off-grid market. VRLA, advanced lead
acid and flow batteries likely to penetrate AC microgrid market. However, the rural housing (gridconnected) segment likely to opt for cheapest possible solutions.

Roof-top PV Drivers
In most parts of India, clear sunny weather is experienced 250 to 300 days in a year. The
equivalent energy potential is about 5,000 trillion kWh per year

India will likely see a record growth in the rooftop solar PV segment. The key market drivers are:

government incentives, mandatory rooftop solar policies at the state level and the rising power tariffs.

The rooftop solar market is still at an early stage with many participants and an exciting dynamic.

Total installed capacity in the residential segment is 112 MW or 40% of the total market, But this market
is highly fragmented and dominated by local companies.

3% (34 GW) of installed capacity by 2022 envisaged under National Tariff Policy
(increased to 8% under draft NTP)
Major States: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka,
Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh

Roof-top PV
Battery is an essential part in the design of roof-top solar PV system. Small power rating and
longer life of the battery is the key parameter for this application.
