DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE

Updated on April 9, 2010

Before a student becomes a student teacher he needs to pass the general education
program of the college. The courses in education are designed to give insights into the
sociological, philosophical, psychological and anthropological foundations of education,
the curriculum, methods of teaching, utilization of instructional resources, techniques of
evaluation and the professional responsibilities of school personnel. Indicated below are
the duties and responsibilities of the student teacher.
1. Set clear purposes Competent teachers have clear purposes in mind for each
learning experience. Each daily lesson plan, each unit of study, contributes to the
achievement of worthwhile purposes.
2. Study individual and class needs He formulates purposes and bases his planning
on the specific needs, abilities, achievement and interests of the pupils with whom he is
working.
3. Study the community This is done to gain understanding of children and their
home background.
4. Provide a balanced program Utilize teacher's guides, teacher's manuals, courses
of study and other curriculum materials.
5. Make effective plans Good planning involves bringing together clear purposes,
knowledge of the children and the community and suggestions from curriculum guides
and teacher's manual.
6. Make content meaningful A thorough knowledge of the subject matter and use of
effective methods for developing both the meaning and the significance of what is
taught.
7. Provide for individual and group work Individual work is provided to ensure that
the specific needs of each learner are met. Group work is provided when common
needs and purposes of the entire class, or a group within the class are to be met.
8. Provide a good environment for learning It should be a healthful environment with
proper lighting, ventilation and temperature. The room should be inviting and challenging to children.

9. Use appropriate methods and materials Employ skills in using the most effective

Familiarize student teacher with available instructional resources.

Ensure that student teacher demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy.

Ensure that student teacher acquires knowledge of students' skills, interests and special needs.

Joyce A. Myers

Teach the young people how

to think, not what to think.
Sidney Sugarman
If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree.
If for a hundred years, teach the people. When you sow
a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When
you teach people, you will reap a hundred harvests.

Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride...
My classroom will be a caring, safe, and equitable environment where each
child can blossom and grow. I will allow children to become responsible
members of our classroom community by using strategies such as class
meetings, positive discipline, and democratic principles. In showing children
how to become responsible for themselves as well as their own learning, I am
giving them the tools to become successful in life, to believe in themselves, and
to love themselves.

Observation

2015-

Last January 7, 2016 this is the day of our deployment to face the real world
of teaching. The day that we going to undergone our OJT or On the Job Training
(Practice Teaching). Time to face the challenge to fulfill the course that we have
chosen. As what I have observe during of our deployment the faculty, students and
staff of Anilao National High School was very nice, they accommodate and
welcomed us very warm. Their principal Dr. Violeta Liboon was entertained and
accomodate us very well. We felt that they were very grateful to have us in their
school.
As I enter the classroom of my cooperating teacher the students was so
noisy, they did not bother to take a little bit silence even if they know that they
have a visitor. I am very thankful to have Maam Jane Evangelista as my cooperating
teacher, because she treated me well, she is a good mentor and facilitator to me. I
really learned a lot from her.
The students nowadays, was different during our time because in our time, if
the teacher scold us, we are very afraid to make a noise again. We respect and
payed attention on their class, also we are afraid to have fails grade. But now, as
what I have encounter they are hard headed not all but almost,I have students in
grade 7-6 that attended my class only ones a week, very talkative and naughty,
sometimes if could not handle my composure and emotion I can say that I want
him to be punished, but it is against in law to hurt and abuse children.
I think the attitudes of students nowadays changed because of the some laws
that the government implemented. Like child protection, you as a teacher you cant
hurt your students physically, even if they disrespect you and makes some
violation, it may sent you in jail. In this kind of situation teachers and future
teachers someday will get miserable, why? Because students nowadays dont have
a good moral and right conduct. Teachers cant discipline and control them anymore
they are already 21st century kinds of students.
This challenges I have encountered makes me a better educator someday
because it trains me on how to handle diverse kinds of students.

Orientation
In our orientation program last January 7, 2016 in the morning. Maam
Suzette Q. Palla orient us about our duties and responsibilities as a Student Teacher.
She orient the things that we should know , possessed about the role, does and
donts, theories and principles as a Student Teacher.

Here are some classroom

management tips to help teachers
settle problems, or prevent them
from occurring, so that they can
spend more of the classroom hour
on teaching and learning.
1. Take Charge of Your Class
Get everyones attention before
beginning class. That means the lesson
wont be started, the lecture wont begin,
and nothing will be written on the
overhead until everyone is in his or her

seat paying attention. It doesnt take a

shout of Lets be quiet or I wont start
until everyone is ready to get them to
focus on you. It can be just as effective to
walk to the front of the room and engage
them with something interesting to
them such as My thermometer said it
was zero this morning. It must have
been freezing out there waiting for the
bus or How many of you saw the
Hunger Games? Open with couple
attention getting comments and
continue until everyone is with you.
Remember, dont start teaching until all
eyes are on you and everyone is in their
seat.

2. Focus on the Disruptive Students

If students arent paying attention or
busy doing other things, get them
focused by using nonverbal signals of
disapproval. If they are talking, pause
and look toward them. If in front of the
class, continue with the lesson but walk
toward the problem students and stop
near their seats, while still teaching.
Having you so near usually shuts off the
unwanted activity as the rest of the
classs attention is directed toward the
misbehaving students. If there is a
discussion going, direct a question to the
student who is not paying attention or
misbehaving. For example, say Kevin,
would you agree that the Battle of New
Orleans was the turning point of the

War of 1812? Hearing his name will

snap Kevin back to the class activity
having the same effect without
embarrassing him as if you had said,
Kevin, pay attention! Remember to
use his name when you begin to speak,
otherwise he may not hear the question.
Calling on a person by name brings
almost anyone out of his or her reverie.
If non-verbal cues are disregarded, the
next step will be imposing discipline
measures within the classroom such as
having them stay a few minutes after
class or changing their seat.

3. Let Students Choose Their Seats

At the beginning of the school year, let
students sit where they want for a few

days. Then about the third day tell them

that the next class period they should
find a seat that they will keep
permanently all year. When students
choose their seats, they have
ownership in those seats and tend to
behave well in order to avoid being
moved.

4. Give Incentives to Do Their Best

on Assignments
If an assignment will not be collected
and graded individually, students may
feel they have no reason to make an
effort to do a good job on the no-credit
assignment. For instance, a teacher will
often do an ungraded warm-up exercise
to begin the class hour.

Heres a strategy to elicit better

performance on an ungraded
assignment: Tell students you will
randomly collect one persons warm-up
assignment and correct it. If that paper
has no mistakes, then the whole class
will have a shorter (or no) warm-up the
next day. If a randomly selected paper is
perfect, that student instantly is the
class hero.
If the student has not made a real effort,
then that student will be given a short
homework assignment, due the next
day. He or she will be penalized if it is
not done. (This homework cannot be
done during class time.) In most cases,
students will work for peer approval by
doing the assignment.

Another strategy to motivate students to

stay on task would be to have students
who have not stayed on task remain
after class for a minute. If there is no
penalty for not working, they have no
reason to work.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Students

Class goes so much better when you can
see your students. Turn your back on
them and you may get surprised.
Position your so that most, if not all of
the class is visible. Watch out for
shelves, computer equipment or class
supplies that can block your view. When
teaching, try to be facing students as
much as possible.

As you work with a student at his or her

desk, place yourself so you can see most
of the class. As you move around the
classroom, dont follow the same
pattern. By varying your routine, it
becomes harder for students to be
disruptive if they dont know where you
will be.

6. Establish Consequences for

Misbehaving
Good classroom management starts the
first day of school. Once students learn
there will be consequences for
misbehavior, they usually come around.
Here are three steps to help you set up
consequences:

1. Determine what consequences will be

effective with your students. Ask
yourself what students dont want to
have happenfor example, adolescent
students hate staying after class, being
moved from a seat theyve chosen, or
receive the disapproval of their peers.
Make those your consequences. (The
reverse is also true, Find out what
students want to have happen and make
that a possibility. Classroom
management doesnt have to be
negative.)
2. Tell students that there will be
consequences for misbehavior. First,
you will put their name on the board.
Tell them that how long they stay after
class depends on how the rest of the
hour goes. They now control their own
destiny. If they behave, they will stay
perhaps only a minute. If they continue

to cause problems, they will stay longer.

Tell them if they become a model
citizen, you might even erase their
name.
3. Follow through with consequences
for misbehavior. Show students that you
are serious and they will take you
seriously.
