John and Bonnie Jones,
DVM, are the owners of
Delphos Animal Hospital.

To accomplish its mis-
sion, the Delphos Animal
Hospital health care team
has been assembled very
carefully with more than
50 years of experience.
Lima-area native and Ohio
State University graduate
April Shattuck joined the
team in 2005, bringing
with her a strong back-
ground in small animal
medicine and surgery.
Most recently, Dr. Sara
Smith, a Spencerville
High School and magna
cum laud Ohio State
University graduate,
became the fourth mem-
ber of the doctors’ team in
July 2009.
Along with their sup-
port staff of “caring
professionals,” all four
veterinarians treat their
patients “as if they were
their own.” Employing a
state-of-the-art in-house
laboratory, dental and
x-ray equipment, the
practice emphasizes the
importance of preventa-
tive health care while also
providing 24-hour emer-
gency care. In addition,
to insure their patients
always receive the best
veterinary care at all
times, the doctors and
health care team regularly
attend continuing-educa-
tion training.
Educating their
patients’ owners, Dr.
Bonnie said, is the core
the practice.
“We are an advocate
for the pets, not the own-
ers,” she said. “Educating
people on how to best
care for their pets is very
important. If they know
what their pets need and
provide that, the pets have
a better quality of life and
may need to see us less.
Preventative care is key to
healthy pets.”
The Jones team opened
the Delphos Animal
Hospital in the summer
of 1987 as the only mixed
animal practice in the area
as well as the being the
only husband-wife vet-
erinary team. They both
graduated from the Ohio
State University College
of Veterinary Medicine
in 1985. John hails from
Dublin and Bonnie from
Lakewood. John had an
uncle in Venedocia the
pair visited and liked the
area.
Following graduation,
John worked with Dr.
Laman in Delphos and
Bonnie worked with Dr.
McNutt in Lima. Both
have different reasons for
becoming veterinarians.
“I think I became a
veterinarian because of
my interest in and love
for animals and because
of the science involved,”
Bonnie said.
John’s entry into the
field came by way of his
family.
“My dad and my broth-
er were both veterinarians
so I had a lot of exposure
to it. My dad had a regular
practice before he went
to teach at OSU. I also
got some practical expe-
rience working with my
brother,” John said.
John works primarily
with dairy cows, hogs,
sheep, goats and horses.
Bonnie’s patients are
cats, dogs, rabbits, birds
and more exotic pets. Of
course they both step in
and help each other when
the work load dictates.
Delphos Animal
Hospital will hold an
open house and pet expo
from 2-4 p.m. Sunday.
Exhibitors include a
groomer, trainer, kennel
owners and pet photog-
rapher. Refreshments,
demonstrations, door
prizes and more will be
offered.
