EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The title of the project is A Study on Logistic Management at Aero Freight Co Ltd, in Qatar.
Aero Freight is a top international freight forwarding company in Doha Qatar.
This project was carried out during tenure of two month with Aero Freight Co Ltd, Doha
Qatar, Under the guidance of Mrs. Nirmala John. I was entrusted to study the content
development of Aero Freight Co Ltd. The customers of Aero Freight Co Ltd are the various
business entities operating in Doha city.
Data used during the project was primary as well as secondary data. The source used
for primary data was collected by structured questionnaire from customers; secondary
data was collected from internet and various books.
The data analysis was done by using various statistical methods graphical
presentation. The research approach was survey technique in the area of Doha city,
Qatar.
Documentation and procedures, though complex and cumbersome are integral part of
the international marketing operations, Full knowledge and accurate compliance of
procedures and documentation formalities and documentation formalities and as
essential as looking into areas of understanding of the various formalities on the part
of the managers results in protracted correspondence, adversely affecting the business
and cash flow due to delays in realization of export proceeds as also the various
incentives.
No country can fully meet its needs and demand through internal resource. At times
are to be bought from outside (import) to be sold outside that is export to keep
demand and supply under check.
The physical transfer of goods in an international trade has traditionally been
associated with a number of documents and related procedure has multiplied making
traditional trade complex and cumbersome. Need for documentation arises primarily
because of certain peculiarities of international trade transactions. This necessitates
concluding a formal contract laying down duties and responsibilities of buyers and

VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS:CUSTOMS CLEARANCE DEPARTMENT

Customs clearance is carried out at the port customs declaration, customs inspection, tax,
customs clearance procedures known series. Namely, customs clearance, customs clearance,
customs clearance on the known means that imports, exports and transit of goods into the
customs territory of a country or territory must be declared to the Customs, customs formalities
set forth to fulfil its obligations under the various laws and regulations ; only in the performance
of its obligations, customs declaration, inspection, taxation, release and other formalities, the
goods can be released, the owner or reporting people to pick up the goods.
Similarly, the various means of transport carrying export cargo entry and exit, or transit, is also
required to declare to the Customs, customs formalities, the Customs permission. During the
customs clearance of goods, whether import, export or transit, are under the supervision of the
Customs Department, are not allowed to circulate freely. Is the basic documents required for
invoices, packing lists, bills of lading had. Related to certain products, customs require the

CONTAINER FREIGHT STATIONS (CFS)

CFS is a place where containers are stuffed, de-stuffed and aggregation/ segregation of
export/import cargo take place. With the growing volume of international trade, the need for
expeditious clearance of goods at the port within the minimum possible time has been gaining
importance. This is more so when the ports are facing congestion at their premises. Further, for
optimal utilization of existing infrastructure, space, equipment, goods that are landed at ports
need to be evacuated straight away without any loss of time. Accordingly the concept of
Container Freight Stations (CFS) has grown in importance along with the development and
growth of ports. A CFS is an extended arm of Port/ ICD, where import/ export goods are kept till
completion of their examination and clearance. The imported goods can be immediately shifted
from the port to CFS which also helps in the reduction of port congestion.
All the activities related to clearance of goods for home consumption, warehousing, temporary
admissions, re-export, temporary storage for onward transit and outright export and
transhipments take place from such stations. Therefore, clearance of goods from CFS is an
important point of consideration for trade in respect of export/ import Cargo as it is the final
Customs contact point.

As regards exports, Shipping Bills are required to be filed along with other documents such as
invoice, Application for Removal (ARE), packing list etc. The Assessing Officer in the export
department checks the value of the goods, classification, rate of duty and others with regards to
different provisions and the Foreign Trade Policy and related documents. After the Shipping Bill
is passed by export department, the exporter presents the goods to the Shed Appraiser (Export)
for examination. The examination is carried out under supervision of Shed Appraiser/
Superintendent (Export) and after examination, officer gives a Let Export order, after which
exporter may load the goods into vessel/aircraft under supervision of Customs Officer.
The goods are brought directly to CFS under a Shipping Bill. The export cargo in Less than
Container Load (LCL)/ Full container Load (FCL) is received by the Custodian of CFS for safe

custody. After stuffing of the goods, Container/ Customs Bonded Truck (CBT) is sealed by the
Custom Officer and the same is removed from CFS for export through the desired Port.

ON THE DESIGN OF A REAL-TIME KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM FOR

MANAGING LOGISTICS OPERATIONS

Over the past 10 years, various kinds of logistics information systems have
been developed to store and process all sorts of data and information to
support daily logistics operations. However, the logistics planning or
decision-making of logistics activity is still executed manually.(Knowledge-based
system for managing logistics operations ; K. H. Chow, K. L. Choy and W. B. Lee 2007)

In this paper, a real-time knowledge-based system (RKBS) is designed to

support logistic service providers in making decisions during the stage of
logistics planning and operation by extracting, sharing and storing real-time
logistics knowledge. The proposed system, which is suitable for usage in
different business processes in a warehouse operating environment, is
developed by integrating radiofrequency identification, online analytical
processing, case-based reasoning technologies, and a branch-and-bound
resource-route-optimizing programming model. Through applying the RKBS
in GENCO, a US-based logistics service company, the overalllogistics
servicing level is enhanced through accurate decision-making and planning
of warehouse operations.

OPTIMIZATION OF WAREHOUSE STORAGE CAPACITY UNDER A

DEDICATED STORAGE POLICY

The

problem

of

the

determination

of

the

space

requirements

for

warehousesystems operating under a dedicated storage policy, full turnoverbased storage, is investigated. Space shortage occurs when demand exceeds
the warehouse storage capacity. The additional space requirement is
satisfied by considering a leased storage space. (Optimization of Warehouse Storage
capacity under adedicated storage policy - M.-K. Lee a& E. A. Elsayedb)

The warehouse storage capacity problem is then formulated as a nonlinearprogramming model to minimize the total cost of owned and leased
storage space. An iterative search procedure, which always generates the
optimal solution, is developed.
Illustration of the approach for systems operating under the standard
economic-order quantity inventory model is provided. The results obtained
using the optimization approach presented can be used for determining
bounds or approximations for the first cutdesign of the storage space
requirements.

design is simply the framework of plan for a study, it is used as a guide in
collecting and analyzing the data. It is a blueprint that is followed in
completing the research study.
My approach to research is descriptive

Research Procedure:
It is not possible for s researcher to collect data from every member of the
population for a particular research, so i have adopted convenience random
sampling procedure. In this sampling procedure, it mostly assures each
element in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample.

Therefore i have selected samples randomly and then collected the

information through a questionnaire

Methods of Data Collection

There are two types data Primary Data and Secondary Data. The primary data
are those which are collected a fresh and for the first time and thus happen to be
original in character. The secondary data on the other hand, are those which have
already been passed through statistical process. While doing research I had taken
the help of both primary data as well as secondary data for analysing the result.

Primary Data:
During survey the primary data was collected with the help of structured
questionnaire. In this survey method a questionnaire is personally given to the
respondent from the selected sample with a request to answer the questions and
return the questionnaire. A questionnaire consist number of question relevant to the
research problem, printed or typed in a definite order on the form or sets of forms.
The questionnaire is personally provided to respondents under the guidance of the
researcher.

Secondary Data
Secondary data collected form, internet and various books. For the collection of
secondary data various books, website, company internal records and personal
researches relevant to the research problem have been included.

SAMPLE DESIGN
Sampling is done to get reliable information in a lesser time, at lower cost

Since sample size is only 100, which is not a true representative of the
population as a whole

perfect. Most of the customers did not take the questionnaire seriously as it

is of no use for them

Cost and time was also another limitation factor that affected the study.

samples.
Though many documents prevail in documentation, only certain document plays vital role
in part of company unwanted paper work could be avoided.

CONCLUSION

The internship at Aero Freight Co Ltd helped me to understand Logistic Management System.
The main reason behind the success of the company is good service. From the study at Aero
Freight Co Ltd, was able to acquire practical knowledge about the functioning of export, import,
custom clearance and marketing procedure. It is also immense help to me in understanding
various methods together, how they are properly coordinated to achieve the goals of the
company, which had only theoretical knowledge so far. Also the study gave me an idea about the
various problems faced by the company and how solutions are arrived and was able to
understand the importance of documentation and customs procedure, which are the integral part
the foreign trade. There are many departments working within the company such as Marketing,
operations, documentation etc. Generally the study helped to fill the gap between theory and
practice.
