CAD and CAM are acronyms. CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design and
CAM stands for Computer-Aided Manufacturing. These two systems work
together to design a product and then manufacture it. The term CAD/NC
(number controlled) is also used as an equivalent in some industries, which
goes back to history of computer assisted manufacturing machines. In the
1950s paper rolls with holes punched in them fed the manufacturing
machines. These holes represented numbers and letters that gave the
dimensions of the item being manufactured to the machine. This process has
been updated with CAD/CAM. The designer uses the CAD program to
create precise images of the product to be manufactured. The CAD
software feeds these designs to the CAM program. The CAM program uses
these designs to determine the physical shape of the product and creates
instructions for the manufacturing machines.

Shape 2013
Due for release later in the year, Dental SystemTM 2013 features new indications and workflows to cover all major dental
indications. New features include Denture Design, including a Gingiva Creation tool; Implant planning and drill guide design;
The RealView EngineTM which lets technicians visualize the complete oral situation in realistic shades while they work; Post
and Core, which allows users to design all layers in a single workflow; telescopic crowns; fully-digital implant bridges; the
option to transfer patient-specific jaw motions from an electronic facebow into the Virtual Articulator; and more.
The Straumann CARES System 7.0 open standard software platform provides
technicians with a validated internal workflow with output to the company's
centralized production facility as well as an external workflow and full flexibility to
import multiple data sources and export open STL files to multiple production
channels. The my.Straumann CARES desktop features a series of user-friendly
apps to guide the technician through the digital solution of choice.
exocad
exocad America, Inc
A simple, economical and robust CAD software solution, exocad allows design of full crown and bridge,
custom abutments, and custom bars with dynamic virtual articulation, TruSmile and DICOM viewer
capabilities. The software supports more than 20 different scanners along with major CAM systems and
fabrication devices. It can be private labeled to medium to large labs or milling centers, and smaller labs
can find the software behind CAD/CAM systems from Zirkonzahn, Amann Girrbach, Origin and other
companies.
DentaLogic 2.0 software is now available for the E4D Dentist CAD/CAM system.
The software is designed to offer more accurate virtual model representations
, increased performance and expanded material selection.
The proprietary ICE (ICEverythingTM ) view has been enhanced with ICE SpotlightTM
said to provide more accurate margin detection
. The software also opens the E4D SkyTM
Network in beta format, which allows transfer of data to design services,
dental laboratories or open file format solutions
(.stl), via DDX, Henry Schein's Digital Dental Exchange and web communication portal.
