NARRATIVE REPORT OF THE CAMPUS JOURNALISM
SY 2015-2016
Last June 2015, we invited student writers interested or with experience in
campus journalism to join the organization. They went through screening by writing
articles as their challenge. The selected student writers then became the
members of the organization who later competed for the Division Schools Press
Conference at Balingasag Central School.
The election of the new set of Campus Journalism officers followed. Then all
the members were assigned to cover events and school activities through the
school year. They also underwent seminar on writing to review their writing skills.
Campus photo journalists were also assigned to take pictures together with the
assigned writers. They were asked to submit articles a week after the event or
celebration to avoid congestion of deadlines.
Side by side their writing assignments were their individual training for
their assigned writing events for DSPC. To maximize teacher participation to their
preparation, we tapped some English teachers to be teacher- coaches of the
students. The coaches were briefed of their responsibilities and the challenge that
awaits everyone. Coaches met their student writers and agreed upon schedule they
have to keep for their training. It is expected that student writers observe the
schedule and the coaches take care of the students assigned to them.
This year, the teacher coaches for English writing events were: Mrs. Vilma
J. Abastas, Ms. Jo Ann Katherine Z. Valledor, Ms. Rachel S. Factura, Mrs. Gina S.
Estor, Mr. Rito P. Geralde and Mrs. Thelma T. Cabello. The coaches prepared
training materials to use in the training.

By October 2015, the campus journalists underwent a special training with

experienced trainers. More writing materials were provided and more lectures
were conducted for further exposure to the competition.
October 22, 2015 was the date for DSPC held at Balingasag Central School,
while Broadcasting English and Filipino both elementary and high school was held
Alubijid National Comprehensive High School.
The result of the DSPC in our school are as follow: 1 st place Sports writingEnglish, ninth place in Editorial cartooning English, 2 nd in Collaborative Writing
English, 10th place in Broadcasting- English.
Princess Dael, 1st Pagwawasto and Rogelli Emanel, 1 st in sports writingEnglish both qualified in the Regional Schools Press Conference. Although, we
didnt get to represent in the national level, but the experience in the RSPC in
Oroquieta City was already very rewarding.
The students assignments in covering school events and celebrations were
not yet over. At the end of February 2016, the school would be printing the first
issue of the school paper this school year.
We hope that next year, we will see more students qualifying in the RSPC
and be able to represent in the national level.

NARRATIVE REPORT OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

SY 2015-2016
For this school year JNHS English department aimed to improve at the
following

areas;

Teaching-learning

process;

students

outcomes;

community

involvement; professional growth and development.

For the teaching-learning process, with the close monitoring of the principal
hand in hand with the respective subject area coordinator, in the person of Mrs.
Bernadette N. Cagata, 100% of the teachers made and submitted their lesson plans
on time. Students attendance and behavior were closely monitored. Teachers
conducted home visitations to students who showed signs of dropping out and those
that showed indifference towards their students. Some teachers also conducted
parent-teacher conference to investigate on this matter. Attendance and even
tardiness were checked every period. Teachers also gave special assignments to
students who lagged behind to give them chance to catch up with the class.
The teachers class records were also checked by the principal to monitor
teachers use of the prescribed K to 12 grading system with the use of the e-class
record. Although some teachers found this convenient, but those who arent well
versed on the computer use found this a challenge. Teachers were indeed reminded
to make use of all possible ways to help students improve their performance.
Teacher class observations were also conducted to also monitor teachers
performance and conduct of classes.
Despite the monitoring and evaluation of the teachers, still some students
badly need help. Some have difficulty in reading silently and even orally.
Comprehension level also tells another story. English teachers employed varied
ways to alleviate these problems. Some of the activities conducted were read-athon, remedial reading at convenient time, oral reading, comprehension testing,
writing a paragraph-a-day, spelling, vocabulary enrichment. Some students

responded in the given interventions, some still shy away from the given activities.
Activities may have been provided, but they were not 100% guarantee to
effectively help every student at-risk. The intervention program is a slow process
that also worked with the attitude of the students.
Aside from helping students-at-risk, the English department also made sure
that students develop their macro skills and talents. Some became officers in the
English club, some participated in the campus journalism and still some were
confident enough to participate in the different school activities and competitions
be it in schools or inter-school. The school also participated in the English
Extravaganza held at Salay Central School. We joined the Jazz chants competition
and the Extemporaneous Speaking contest. We ranked 7th and 2nd accordingly.
PTA meetings were also held in order to establish connection and
communication between the home and the school. Grades and attendance were
openly discussed and closely monitored. Most parents come and see their childrens
advisers and cooperated with the advisers. Still a few need to be home visited;
even the parents needed to be helped.
The department also made sure that teachers participate in the different
contests. The department coordinator see to it that teachers were given special
assignments for coaching and training contestants. To refuse these assignments is
indeed discouraged.
Lastly, the department also helped in coming up with the school paper for
this year. Some English teachers assisted in the checking and proofreading of the
articles submitted by the students to make sure that it would be grammatically
correct.
