AP Environmental Science Service Learning Project:

You and your partner are to pick an issue related to AP Environmental Science for which
you would like to make a difference. Your goal is to create a campaign that promotes
your cause and encourages others to take action. You are trying to convince people
there is a problem with this issue, why it is a problem and tell them what they can do
about it. Do not choose a topic that is overly large, for example if you are concerned
about global climate change choose one specific part of it that people can address. At
the same time do not choose a topic that is overly done and a fourth grader could do it,
for example save the whales.
Sample topics: choose something specific (if you think of something not on this list, you
can run it by me and we can discuss it)

Renewable energy, for example buying environmentally friendly transportation, solar power etc.
Electronic waste
Municipal waste such as plastic bag ban, reduction of paper, trash, recycling
Water degradation or water conservation
Biodiversity loss
Habitat loss and non-native species
GMOs (genetically modified food)
Overpopulation
Overconsumption
Indoor air pollution
Deforestation and how we can reduce it (can be domestic or rainforest)
Global climate change (choose one specific aspect)

The assignment:
Part 1: The slogan- Create a slogan or motto for your non-profit group (SEE EXAMPLES
ON SCHOOL LOOP)
Part 2: The logo- Design a logo for your non-profit organization
Part 3: The public service announcement - Create a public service announcement
(choose one)
2 minute video that explains the problem and convinces people to do something.
Or

Childrens book that uses a story to explain a problem and convince kids to do
something about it (these books will be given to my sisters 4th grade class and
they will read them )

Part 4: The Research Paper

The paper needs to be 3+ pages and include the following:
1. Title
2. Thesis statement: Your position on the issue
3. History of the problem
How did it develop?
How was it discovered?
What have people done so far to solve the problem?
Are there any relevant laws or treaties?
4. Causes of the problem
5. Consequences of the problem present and future
6. Proposed solutions, including what we can do
7. The position of those who oppose you
8. Works Cited page

Part 5: The Presentation:

1. You will present your issue to the class, explain what the problem is (information
from your research paper) and why you chose it.
2. Show your video or read your childrens book (if doing the video you must save it to
a memory stick or email it to me the day before so I can get it set on my desk top so
we can make sure it plays when your turn comes. )
