Wow.Whatanexperienceitwas.WegottoseemanyinterestingprototypesusingsensorsandSAPHANA
CloudPlatformInternetofThingsServices.Hereisthequickrecapoftheoverallexperience:

Hackadaywasorganizedby AaronWilliamsatSAPdshoponFebruary22,2016.Around40people
participatedincludingSAPmentors,SAPemployeesandacoupleofcheerfulandbrightkidsaswell.The
eventstartedwithasessiononSAPHANACloudPlatformIoTservicespresentedbymycolleagueWeiWei
LinfromtheSAPHANACloudPlatformProductManagementteam.SheexplainedwhatIoTServicesare,
whatthetypicalusecasesare,andthendemonstratedhowtogetstartedwiththeseservicesintheHANA
CloudPlatformCockpit.Then NethajiTummurufromtheSAPInnovationCenterteamtalkedaboutsome
inspiringideasincludingdifferentpossibilitiesfordevelopingdemosusingIoTServicesandhowtheyhave
builtsomeinnovativedemosintheirorganization.

Afterthat,participantsweresplitinto8teams.Eachteamhadbeensuppliedwithmultipledifferentsensors
formonitoringthingslikepressure,heartrate,andtemperature.Duringthenext45hours,teamshadtobuild
someprototypesusingthesesensors,HCPIoTServicesandFioriUI.Ataround4PM,westartedwiththe
finalpresentations.HereIwouldliketoshowsomeofthecoolideasthatwonprizesinthishackathon:

1.SmartChair:Theideabehindthisdemowastokeeppeopleactiveduringtheirworkhoursandavoidthe
situationwheretheykeepsittingonchairforlonghours.Inthisproject,theteamattachedsomesensorsto
thechairthatwouldcontinuouslysenddatatoHCPviaIoTServices.Therewasathresholdlevelsetforhow
manyminutespersoncancontinuouslysitonthechairthatonceitwasreached,willcauseavibration
notificationtobesenttoalertpersononthechairthatheorshehadbeensittingtoolongandnowitstimeto
getupandawayfromthedeskanddosomeotheractivity.

2.TAMCAM:Thiswasanothercoolideafocusingonchildrendiagnosedwithintheautismspectrum.With
thisproject,thesensorcanbeattachedtothatchild'sshirt,whereitwillmonitorvariousinputslike
temperature,motion,andvibration,andkeepthatdatastoredonHCP.Parentscanthenanalyzethe
behavioralpatternsofthechildbasedonthisdata,whichwillhelpthemunderstandbetterunderwhat
conditionsorafterwhichthresholdlevelthechildbehavesdifferentlyandtheycanfurtheravoidsuch
conditionsinfuture.

3.SmartHealth:Inthisproject,theteamcreatedaprototypewhereintherewillbesensorsattachedto
factoryworkersshirtsthatwillmonitortheirheartrateandsomeotherparameters.Andbasedonthisdata,
theycancreateascheduleastohowtoallocatetheshiftsforeachworkerandtakesomeprecautionary
measuresiftherearesomeabnormalreadings.

4.ParksManagement:Thiswasanotherinnovativeideathatwillhelpnationalparkstoidentifylocationsof
patronsandkeeptrackofthem.Therewillbebeaconsinstalledintheparkatmultiplelocationsandsensors
attachedtothepatronsshirtswillcontinuouslysenddataabouttheirlocationtoHCP.Ifapatrongetslost,
parkadministratorscanfindouthisorherlocationbasedonthisdata.

Firstoff,theSAPdShopspaceisfantasticforthistypeofevent.Thelookandfeeloftheplaceimmediately
engagedtheattendees.Thefacilitiesthattheyprovidearesecondtononetoallowparticipantstobe
creative.
Ihavedonemyfairshareoninnojamsandhackathons,Icantellyouthattheconceptofdoingthisin5hours
althoughdaunting,isabsolutelypossibleusingtheHCPIOTservices.Ihavepersonallyplayedwithpushing
IOTdatatoHANAusingcustomxsodataobjectsandalthoughitiseasytodo,itwasnotasseamlessas
usingtheIOTservices.Itreallydidtakethemiracleoutofwhythingswork.Participantswerethenallowedto
getonwiththejobofmakingelectronicsworkandbuildingtheUIforthedemo.
IfacilitatedanIOTworkshoplastyearthattooktheattendeesfromhavingneverseemtheelectronics
platform(Arduino)tobuildingaUIonHANAtorepresentthedatainoneday.Iwillbeupdatingthisworkshop
tonowuseHCPIOTservicestostreamthedata.
FinallyImustsaythatIammostimpressedwiththeSAPEcosystemfortheoverwhelmingresponseto
includingmychildreninthisactivity.Theeventorganizersandstaffweremorethanwillingtoallowthemto
participatebutdidnotpandertothem.Theywerethereasequalattendeesjustlikeeverybodyelse.Itreally
wasbrilliantformychildrentobeabletotakepartinthisandseehowtheirexperiencewithIOTdevices
comparestoothers.Ithasinstilledconfidenceinthemthatsimplycannotbetaughtorreplicated.ForthatI
amverygrateful.

IOTServicesisverysimplifiedprocesstolearninfewminutesanduseittoenablesensortoaction.IOT
servicesuserinterfacescreensarequitesimpleandstepbysteptabsareeasytofollowindefiningthe
devicetypesanddevicesitselftomapandtoonboardthesensordataintoHANA.WithIOTservicesyoucan
quicklyonboardandmanageconnectedremotedevicestogetrealtimepredictiveanalytics.Goodtohavethe
informationsomewhereaswhatquantityofdatawecanstreamatatimeusingIOTservicestoHANA.

3.SaschaWenningerSAPMentor

Ithoughttheeventwasreallynicelyorganized,andtheworkshopspacewithallofthehardware,tools,and
professionalhelpbyBlagandAaronwasreallygreat,andconducivetogettingaresultproducedontheday.
Havingtheorganizersallocatepeopletoteamsactuallyworkedwellinthecaseofourteam,aswehada
goodmixofanexperiencedArduinoprogrammer(Marc),andanexcellentpresenter(Andreas)soareally
goodmixoftechnicalandnontechnicalskillsontheteam.WeusedHCPforreportingthetimesthatthe
chairwasoccupiedbacktoHANA:)
Thus,overall,itwasareallywonderfulexperiencetoseesomanycreativeideas.Ifyouareinspiredtobuild
