CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the study
There is no doubt that the use of English in international communication has
been more wide spread than any other languages in the world. English has been used
in all aspects of international relationship such as the economy, diplomacy, and other
businesses. That is way, is it not suprising that English is the most important language
and have to be learnt since the earlier ages.
Language has great role in the education, culture and reading. As consequence
every country has different language such as : French,Germany, and English.
However, the most famous language is English because it is an international
language. By mastering English well, we can study and develop knowledge,
technology, art, and culture more easily and make a realtionship with other countries
without any difficulties.
For the reason, indonesian goverment has chosen English as the first foreign
language to be learned formally in schools of indonesia. English is taught at
elementary school. While other foreign language begin to be taught at Senior High
School and some other at University level. Goverment also tries to train English
teacher and implement the appropriate curriculum

to increase students English

skills. By these ways, it is hoped that English becomes the second language and not
the foreign language anymore.
However, after long years of practice that result has not been satisfactory yet.
Most students find difficulties in learning English as a second language. They face
many problems, such as interference of first language, less of motivation and lack of
vacabulary. The last problem is the essenstial one the researcher supposes. Among
the components, vocabulary is the important one to consider, because vocabulary
mastery plays an important role in the process of achieving language. Finocchario

states, The mastery of vocabulary cannot be ignored in the development of the four
aspects of communication namely understanding ,speaking, reading, and listening
Vocabulary is the most important components of language power in using the
language. Students who are rich in vocabulary will be succesfull both in expressive
skills speaking and writing receptive skills reading and listening. But those who are
poor in vocabulary will get trouble in those skills.
The above statements show how important vocabulary is. In fact, the problem
of vocabulary acquisition, which the students face is quite complex. Almost all of
them find difficulties in learning words in a foreign language. The difficulty in
finding out of the English words and in memorizing new words, sometimes make the
students discourged, where as motivation also plays an important role besides
vocabulary. So learners will not get bored in learning English in their classroom.
There are some alternatives of teaching technique that school students. Those must be
suitable with their characteristic. They are; picture, songs ,story stalling, poems, and
games.
Teaching vocabulary to the young learners has many difficulties, so the roles of
teacher, who know the way of teaching and choose the right method, are very
important. The teacher must teach vocabulary using various ways in teachinglearning process so the students are interested in learning English vocabulary.
Actually, vocabulary is the foundation to learn English and is one of the components
of language.
Considering the above background, the researcher decides to use poem in
teaching vocabulary because they are good to introduce vocabulary and provide
meaningful context for the vocabulary. Therefore, she chooses THE
EFFECTIVENESS USING POEM IN TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY
AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SDN KANOR II BOJONEGORO.
1.2. Statement of the Study
Based on the background of the study above, the researcher formulates the
problem in form of the following statements:
1. How is teaching vocabulary in SDN KANOR II BOJONEGORO ?

2. What type poem is most effective to teach vocabulary in SDN KANOR II

BOJONEGORO ?
1.3. Subject of the Study
In accordance with the formulation of the statement of the problems, this study is
intended:
1. To describes the teaching vocabulary in SDN KANOR II BOJONEGORO
2. To identify what kinf of poem are as media of teaching vocabulary At SDN
KANOR BOJONEGORO
1.4. Significance of the Study
This study is mainly intended to give input for teachers in order to help the
students to cope with their vocabulary difficulties by using poem as the media of
teaching. This study is also expected to have positive effects to stimulate the teachers
to create and apply the various poem in their classrooms beside motivating students
to use poem to increase their vocabularies.
1.5. Scope and Limitation of the Study
Actually there are many kinds of poem that are able to be served for teaching and
learning process, such as : writing poem, listening poem, structure poem, vocabulary
poem, and number poem. The scope of the study is teaching English using poem but
she limits her discussion teaching vocabulary using poem.
In teaching vocabulary, we can apply various poem which give the students
opportunities to practice many expressions that they have learned
Practically means "effectively," "in a practical manner," "from a practical
point of view": "It is practically useless to vote in this election." "Try to view
your

situation practically." "Practically speaking,

you

are

financially

bankrupt." Practically is also used to mean "nearly," "almost": "The campers

were practically out of food." Virtually means "for the most part," "just
about," "almost entirely": "." Recommendation: confine the use of
practically to the

meanings

of

practice

and

practical;

use nearly and almost more often than practically , because in one limited
sense, practically means virtually the same thing as virtually.

A theoretically(or conceptual) definition gives the meaning of a word

in terms of the theories of a specific discipline. This type of definition
assumes both knowledge and acceptance of the theories that it depends on.To
theoretically define is to create a hypothetical construct. This method
of operationalization is not to be confused with operationally defining. An
example of a theoretical definition is that of "Heat" in physics, which actually
puts forth an entire theory of heat (involving accelerating molecules, etc.).
Theoretical definitions are common in both philosophy and science, and
can be difficult to understand because of their strict, and often conceptual
uses. The goal is to eliminate vagueness (e.g. how many metres exactly is a
"tall" person?) and ambiguity (e.g. "I purchased a bat" could have many
meanings). Theoretical definitions specify exactly when the word should and
should not be applied. In this regard they are unlike persuasive definitions,
which can be both vague and ambiguous. Theoretical definitions do, however,
have one thing in common with persuasive definitions: they are normative,
and not merely descriptive. To create a theoretical definition is to propose a
way of thinking about an issue.Indeed, theoretical definitions contain builtin theories; they cannot be simply reduced to describing a set of observations.
The definition will contain implicit inductions and deductive consequences
that are part of the theory it pushes. The word "Heat" in physics is not simply
describing molecules, it is proposing various laws of nature and predicting
certain results.
Pedagogically is the science and art of education. Its aims range from
the full development of the human being to skills acquisition. For
example, Paulo Freire referred to his method of teaching people as "critical
pedagogy". In correlation with those instructive strategies, the instructor's own
philosophical beliefs of instruction are harbored and governed by the pupil's
background knowledge and experience, situation, and environment, as well

as learning goals set by the student and teacher. One example would be
the Socratic schools of thought.[ The teaching of adults, however, may be
referred to as androgogy.
1.6. Hypothesis
In searching for the effective of each treatment, the researcher formulates some
hypothesis as follows :
1. Null Hypothesis ( H0)
The students of SDN KANOR II BOJONEGORO do not get better
achivement about poem for teaching vocabulary.
2. Alternatives Hypothesis ( H1 )
The students of SDN KANOR II BOJONEGORO get better achivement
about vocabulary with poem

1.7. Definition of Key Terms

The definition or explanations about their terms are given to clarify their
meaning and to give them some restrictions. Some definitions are put below :
1. Vocabulary
Accaording to Supriyono ( 1988 : 85 ) vocabulary is one the compenents of
language besides grammar and phonology. It plays an important part in learning
the four language skills : listening, speaking, reading and writing. While, Horny (
1974:978 ) defines more clearly that vocabulary is a total number of words,
which with rules for combining them to make up a language. So, it is clear that
vocabulary is one of the there important components of language, which has total
number of words with rules for combining them
2. Poem
Poem is imagination of word derived from a human consciousness in the
form of experience or even an idea , and in the choice of words or stacking
using rhythmic language and aesthetic quality priority for additional . Poetry
is different from prose or paragraph . Because in the poem there is an
emphasis on aesthetics , meter and rhyme a language that will evoke an
emotional response to the reader . In addition, the poem tends originated from

the outpouring of one's heart that causes other people will understand the taste
in his heart .
A poem arranged in rows t . In the temple there are several parts of
sentences, which are not specified ( free ) . The lines can be anything random ,
straight , forming an object , and so on . So not only are the aesthetics of
poetry in words and language only but in the preparation of the temple is also
in demand for a more beautiful and neat
