CheapsideisacommonEnglishstreetname,meaning"marketplace",fromOldEnglishceapan,'tobuy'
(cf."shop",Germankaufen,Dutchkopen,Swedishkpa,pronounced[sheupah]),whencealsochapman
andchapbook.[1]Therewasoriginallynoconnectiontothemodernmeaningofcheap('lowprice',a

History
Cheapsideistheformersiteofoneoftheprincipalproduce
marketsinLondon,cheapbroadlymeaning"market"in
medievalEnglish.Manyofthestreetsfeedingintothemain
thoroughfarearenamedaftertheproducethatwasoncesold
inthoseareasofthemarket,includingHoneyLane,Milk
Street,BreadStreetandPoultry.
Inmedievaltimes,theroyalprocessionalroutefromthe
TowerofLondontothePalaceofWestminsterwould
includeCheapside.Duringstateoccasionssuchasthefirst
entryofMargaretofFrance(secondwifeofKingEdwardI),
intoLondoninSeptember1299,theconduitsofCheapside
customarilyflowedwithwine.[2]
DuringthereignofEdwardIIIinthe14thcentury,
tournamentswereheldinadjacentfields.Thedangerswere,
however,notlimitedtotheparticipants:awoodenstand
builttoaccommodateQueenPhilippaandhercompanions
collapsedduringatournamenttocelebratethebirthofthe
BlackPrincein1330.Noonedied,buttheKingwasgreatly
displeased,andthestand'sbuilderswouldhavebeenputto
deathbutfortheQueen'sintercession.

Cheapsidein1823,lookingwesttowards
StPaul'sCathedral

Onthedayprecedinghercoronation,inJanuary1559,
ElizabethIpassedthroughanumberofLondonstreetsina
precoronationprocessionandwasentertainedbyanumber
ofpageants,includingoneinCheapside.
MeatwasbroughtintoCheapsidefromSmithfieldmarket,
justoutsideNewgate.AfterthegreatChurchofSt.Michael
leQuerne,thetopendofthestreetbroadenedintoadual
carriagewayknownastheShambles(referringtoanopen
airslaughterhouseandmeatmarket),withbutchershopson
bothsidesandadividingcentralareaalsocontaining
AviewofCheapsidepublishedin1837
butchers.Furtherdown,ontheright,wasGoldsmithsRow,
anareaofcommoditydealers.Fromthe14thcenturytothe
GreatFire,theeasternendofCheapsidewasthelocationoftheGreatConduit.

streetsinLondon.Itisalsothesiteofthe'BowBells',the

Middleton'splayAChasteMaidinCheapside(1613)both
satirisesandcelebratesthecitizensoftheneighbourhood
duringtheRenaissance,whenthestreethostedthecity's
goldsmiths.

andisinsteadsimplyoneofmanyroutesconnectingthe
EastEndandtheCityofLondonwiththeWestEnd.
CheapsidewasextensivelydamagedduringTheBlitzinlate
1940andparticularlyduringtheSecondGreatFireof
London.Muchoftherebuildingfollowingtheseraids
occurredduringthe1950sand1960sandincludedanumber
ofunsympatheticcontemporaryattemptsatrecreatingthe
Cheapsidein2012.
centuriesoldarchitecturethathadbeendestroyed.Inrecent
yearsmanyofthesebuildingshavethemselvesbeen
demolishedasaprogrammeofregenerationtakesplacealongCheapsidefromPaternosterSquareto
Poultry.
ThedraftCoreStrategyoftheCity'sLocalDevelopmentFrameworksoutlinesthevisionandpoliciesfor
theCheapsidearea,aimingtoincreasetheamountofretailspacealongandnearthestreet,andmakethe
areaagoodenvironmentforvisitorsandshoppers.TheplanistoreestablishthestreetastheCity's
"HighStreet",includingasaweekendshoppingdestination(untilrecentlymanyretailunitsintheCity
wereclosedonSaturdayandSunday).[7][8]Amajorretailandofficedevelopmentattheheartofthe
scheme,OneNewChange,opened28October2010.[9]ItissitedonCheapsideattheintersectionwith

women'sOlympicmarathontookplaceon5Augustandthemen'sOlympicmarathontookplaceon12
