Technology everywhere, would you like to upgrade your teaching media
my lecturers ?
The new civilization comes rapidly. It brings an upgreadable devices,
gadgets, and visual media which influence whole of human aspects of life.
In the educational field, new digital technologies, and the internet, are
increasingly beneficial for educational purposes. Computers, the internet,
and advanced electronic devices cant be separated from its role as
students helpful goods in gathering an up-to-date knowledge, therefore
the rapid development of technology affects the way teachers to teach
and students to learn. As long as a technological field developed rapidly,
there are recent innovations becoming online or advanced device as a
media involved in teaching learning activities such as its implementation
in assessing reading comprehension, its role in training EFL teacher
trainees pronunciation, and its use in teaching listening.
In teaching reading, it had been found a software that can integrate
a reading activity with online social media application. It is Question Writer
(QW3.5) an Online Reading Assessment (ORA). It is paid software
application system especially developed for online assessment. It can
perform various types of question formats with the students responses
directly forwaded to the teachers e-mail, and feedbacks and scorings
automatically performed by the system. In the current study, a discussion
group called Reading Maniacs was created in Facebook for the students
to get access to both reading materials and assessments. It has been
implemented in three faculties in Stikubank University of Semarang.
Furthermore, Online Reading Assessment (ORA) can be accessed via
dekstop computer, laptop, gadgets or even smart mobole phones. Thus, it
really encourages freedom of modes of teaching and learning. In other
words, interaction between the teacher and the students does not have to
be face-to-face interactional mode.
Teaching pronunciation for EFL students is totally different from
native speakers. The most challenging one is the teachers trainees
pronunciation itself. Teachers training in improving their pronunciation is
very difficult, due to no appropriate learning sources which facilitate them.
Lack of innovation in impoving EFL teacher trainees pronunciation brings
their pronunciation getting worse. Calvo Benzies (2013) Suggest that the
participants found the pronunciation activities monotonous (mainly

listening and repeating tasks) with almost no songs, games, or the use of
computer programs and the internet. In answering that challenge, the new
innovation conducted by Eksi (2016) is the use of Online Text-to-Speech
Tools. It can be used for improving EFL teacher trainees pronunciation.
In teaching listening, an innovation based on the advance
technological devices also takes a role. A conventional media such as
using audio materials does not look such an interesting media in teaching
listening among university students, because it only provides an audio
and no other variation contained. Ampa (2015) stated that such learning
media make the students bored, because there is the lack of variation,
such as the use of video, animation, graphics etc. in breaking that
challenge, Interactive Multimedia Learning Materials using Wondershare
Quizcreator comes as a promising solution. Throuh it, students can be
motivated to learn, because they can listen to audio, watch the video or
view the text, animation and graphics simultaneously. It consists of text
and video of dialogue and monologue that are designed interactively with
the users. The program used to prepare the materials is the Wondershare
Quizcreator. it is one of the programs that lets the educators create
exercises of learning materials, besides, it can also make quiz with the
limit, and provide instant review as well as feedback. Therefore, the
students performance in english listening can be measured with a selfgrading system.
The development of technology cant be denied. Such innovations
give the new ideas for the lecturers in innovating their classroom teaching
and learning media especially in English Departement of Swadaya Gunung
Jati University which the most of the lecturers still use a conventional
media for teaching their classes. According to Bester and Brand (as cited
in Eksi, yesilcinar, 2016) Integrating Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) tools encourages constructive learning more efficiently
than traditional teaching practices. So, would you like to upgrade your
teaching media my lecturers ?
