The method of shipment and the terms of the insurance agreement will determine how
and when damage claims are handled.

2.1 Delivery Inspection

Inspect the container for any signs of physical damage upon receiving delivery.
If the gods is not sent by container the boxes are equipped with Tip / Tell and shock
watches. These have to be checked before the boxes are opened. The Tip/Tell watch
will have a field, which is coloured blue if the box is tilted or turned up-side down. The
shock watch will have a field with red colour if the box have suffered for shocks above
a certain size.

2.2 Equipment Handling

The units should be handled with care. Do not throw, drop or stack the shipping
container. Do not place heavy objects on top of the shipping container. The shipping
container cannot support heavy weights placed on top of it.

2.3 Equipment Storage

If the unit is placed in storage prior to installation, the following precautions should be
observed:

• The unit should be stored in its shipping container.

3.1.2 Protective Earth

All enclosures carrying higher voltage than 75 VDC and or 50 VAC must be tied
to ships metal structure with a earth strap/cable cross section of this should be
minimum 25 mm2. This requirement is for protecting against human injury if a
failure occurs with the electric equipment.

Earth bars in cabinets and consoles shall be connected directly to vessel structure
by a separate earth conductor.

Protecting earth bars are colored yellow and green by taping or painting.

Incoming, outgoing and internal earth conductors in cabinets, consoles and

panels shall be connected directly to the earth bar.

All protective earth conductors except earth bars shall be insulated and colored
yellow and green. Copper braiding and other bare wires used for earthing shall
be provided with insulating sleeves in yellow and green.

All spare conductors shall be connected to earth.

No serial earthing is permitted.

Note!
Normally, in cabinets delivered from Kongsberg Maritime the protective earth
(PE) earthbar is installed.

3.1.3 Static Grounding

3.1.3.1 Bonding of enclosures (Earth)
Use copper wire, with a minimum cross-section of 25mm2, for connecting the cabinet
(enclosure) to ship's hull. It is very important to keep the length of this bonding cable as
short as possible, typical 250 mm. In cases where cabinets (enclosures) are equipped
with shock absorbers or vibration isolators check maximum travel of the cabinet so a
proper length of connection cable can be selected.

4 ELECTRICAL CONNECTION-SHIELDING
4.1 Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) precautions
To obtain EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) there are certain issues, which should
be, paid attention to.

First of all installation drawings should be studied carefully with attention to:

• Power cable entry to apparatus, Recommended maximum length of conductors from

cable gland to terminals.

• Signal and communication cable entry to apparatus, Recommended / required type /

function of cable glands. Screen on signal cable should be terminated to ground
360° at point of penetration.

• Cables should be classified with respect to signal category.

Class Interfering Sensitive Examples of carried signals or connected

equipment
1 Low-level circuits with analogue output, sensor
Sensitive ++ etc
Measuring circuits
2 Control circuits connected to restive load
Slightly + Low-level digital circuits (bus, etc)
Sensitive Low-level D.C. power supplies
3 Control circuits with inductive loads
Slightly + (relays,contactors,coils,inverter,etc) with
interfering suitable protection
4 Welding machines
Interfering ++ Power circuits in general (alternator)
Electronic speed controllers, frequenseconverter,
switching powersupplies,etc

Classification of signals according to level of interference

• Avoid parallel routing of these cable categories which will cause problems i.e. mix
of Class1 and 4 is not advisable.
• Publication from IEC 61000-5-2 (International Electrotechnical Commission)
describes how to obtain Electromagnetic Compatibility of Electrical and Electronic
Installations.

AA00440-A Installation manual ACC20.DOC 10

Installation Manual ACC20

4.2 Shielding connected at both ends

To avoid electromagnetic interference the shields has to be connected at both ends, i.e.:

• Effective against external interference

• Effective even at cable resonance
• No potential difference cable and frame connection
• High damping effect

Shielding becomes ineffective if the cable is too long

Ship cables do often consist of an inner shield and an outer steel wire braiding
In that case, the inner shield must be connected to the DPU and the steel wire braiding
must be connected to the frame for personal safety.

Note: Always connect the shield and the steel braiding in both ends.

Any conductor in a cable, which is spare or not used, must always be grounded at both
ends.

Outer steel wire braiding to be connected to the frame

5.2 Cabling recommendation

When planning the physical location of cables and cables trays from the DPU to the
ACP in the control room, the following guidelines for cabling most be followed:

1. Cables can be grouped in four different interference classes according to

EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and sensitivity.
2. Alternator main cables, signal cables and communication cables must be
laid separately. The distance between cables carrying signal of different
classes must be maximised.

5.3 Connections of 24V DC supply

The following precautions should be taken when connecting the DC supply:

• The cross-section of the wires used should be sufficient to prevent a voltage

drop of no more than 10% at full load.

• Make sure that the unit to be connected is switched off and the mains power
fuses are removed, or the circuit breakers are switched off.

• Connect the 24V DC-supply to the screw-terminals marked “+”and “-”.

• Check that the polarity is correct before switching the connected unit on.

The non-interruptible power source is normally provided by KONGSBERG MARITIME, and is

build up to cover the actual installation

For proper operation during a mains power failure, the battery provided by KONGSBERG
MARITIME is capable of supplying the total load current for the entire KONGSBERG
MARITIME system for min. 30 min. without the voltage of the battery falling below the
minimum operating voltage of the KONGSBERG MARITIME equipment, which is 18 VDC.

The UPS shall be connected to KONGSBERG MARITIME equipment only.

5.3.1 24V DC Power distribution

When planing the physical distribution of 24V DC power, take into consideration that
one single fuse failure shall not bring down the propulsion control system
An example of power distribution for a propulsion control sytem is shown on the next
pages.

8.2 Floor Mounted Cabinets

In some cases the bottom plate in our cabinet is removed and the cables is taken through
deck via a multi-cable transit (MCT) (Bratberg, Hawk). Other solutions is to fill the
entrance hole with a expanding foam or special composite.

It is important to separate cables which conducts a voltage higher than 48V AC or 75 V

DC from all other cabling.

The cable screen shall be terminated to the common earthbar with a “pigtail” with
maximum length 50mm

AA00440-A Installation manual ACC20.DOC 42

Installation Manual ACC20

8.3 Console Mounted Equipment

8.3.1 Introduction
The installation of cables in consoles has to be done according to our recommendations
since the signals for a console may be of all different kinds. It is of the greatest
importance to keep the length of the pigtails as short as possible to avoid electro
magnetic interference (EMI)

Console
Terminal Board Terminal Board

max. 50mm.
Pigtails max.
50mm
Common Earthbar

Cable entrance cut out

Deck

Cable tray

The cables are normally taken in to the console via a cable tray and through a hole in
deck. The cable needs a support in the console and they are normally tied together with
cable ties. The cables is taken through deck via a multi-cable transit (MCT) (Bratberg,
Hawk), or by filling the cable entrance hole in the deck with a expanding foam or other
composite to make the entrance water and gas proof after all cables are entered.
We recommend that the isolated cable shall not be longer than 50mm into the cabinet.
The pigtails from each screen for the cables shall not be longer than 50mm and shall be
connected to a common earthbar. If it is not possible to limit the length of the pigtail to
50mm, we recommend to install an additional earthbar to be able to reach this with a
50mm. pigtail.

It is important to separate cables which conducts a voltage higher than 48V AC or 75 V

DC from all other cabling.

If the console is mounted on deck with rubber shock absorbers or similar remember to
install earth strap between the console and deck (Ships hull)
